"I'm 1/8 Irish" -Every American
Ironically, that is exactly how much ancestry from Ireland I have from my Dad's side. The rest is German. Mom has a bit of Ulster Irish ancestry with her main heritage being...English. Also, Dad's family is Catholic, Mom's is Protestant (Baptist). But since I'm from the states, I always say I'm half-Missouri, half-Louisiana.
Sabastian talbot 100% true FYI im from ireland
And? You’d be surprised what gets passed down, in differing degrees depending on location, with that amount of heritage. On my moms side I have a lot more Irish heritage (probably adding up to a 1/4) but no one really has anything Irish other than looks. On my dads side there’s a lot less Irish but we know there were some and oddly a lot of it has been passed down because they lived in a very isolated rural area. My family there still eats a lot of old Irish inspired meals (I had to trace them because some of them were definitely unusual for the area).
If people are using their heritage to learn about other countries and other people isn’t that a good thing? Everyone talks about how Americans are ignorant (which, granted, many are) and yet get annoyed when we make an effort to be less so. Frankly I find very few international groups make any effort to understand American culture (I have never met an American who says they are from Ireland, only that they are “Irish “ in ancestry) and it only makes Americans less willing to look beyond their tiny piece of the earth. And I say this as an American making every effort to move out of this country XD
All Americans are basically Irish im 1 quarter Irish stereotypically
im 75 percent duch and 15 percent amirican

Some notes on the Irish language:
- It is called Gaeilge
- The Ó prefix in names is for males and for females changes to Ní
- There is no singular word for yes/no
- The communities who do speak it are known as Gaeltachts and students will go there to practice during the summer (big deal)
- All signs and government docs must be issued in English and Gaeilge
- And finally, it is NOT similar to English so stop saying the pronunciations are stupid or weird, it is LITERALLY a different language!! (Goes for names too like Niamh or Meadbh)
Meadhbh*
We cant have americans spelling meadhbh wrong another way aswell
Has Ní been used in any surnames? For example, I can find references to O'Reilly and O'Kelly but none with Ní. Genuinely interested; wondering if you know of any instances of Ní (historical or modern).
CloudCharlie Well, my name is Murphy so it is O’Murchú as Gaeilge but if I was a girl it would be Ní Murchú. It is mainly when the name is fully Gaeilge and not partly english.
@@CloudCharlie My name in Irish is Christoir o Broin while my daughter is Megan Ni Broin.

Originally, Irish surnames never had prefixes but then clans started splitting up and people started using names like “Mac Conchobhair” which means “Son of Conchobhair” and the grandson and all generations coming after that are called “Ó Conchobhair” which means “descendant of Conchobhair”. The prefix “Mac” was kept by some for some reason though. The Nic prefix is the female equivalent to Mac and Ní is the female equivalent to Ó, whenever a woman gets married, she will change the prefix to “Uí” and her surname to her husband's surname. The British came so everyone with an anglicized surname just uses the “Mc” or “O” prefix

To any visitor to Ireland, they got the weather wrong. There are about 150 wet days (days with any amount of rain) on the east coast and 225 wet days on the west coast. And those wet days are spread fairly evenly throughout the year. There aren't any dry months here. The flag explains everything:
GREEN: country itself
WHITE: pale skin
ORANGE: hair color
@@annam3211 Ehm, it's a joke? Take it easy...
so really its symbolic of the struggle between protestants and Catholics in the North, green, the Catholics, Orange, the prods and white being the peace between them.

6:40 It’s kind of the same in Finland, where the Christian missionaries and other religious folks tried to Christianize our summer solstice _(”Ukon vakat”_ or ”Ukko’s bushels”), which was a very pagan holiday and involved lots of drinking and sacrificing beer to _”Ukko Ylijumala”_ (our supreme deity), but they only really managed to change the name into _”juhannus”_ (”St. John’s Day”). The drinking stayed, and is still a key part of our summer solstice (/midsummer).

Love Ireland from Malta I'm 1/4 Irish through my grandfather
Thanks! I’m glad to see so many countries respecting us. Have a great day!
Maith thú lads, well done. You managed to make a video about Ireland that wasn't just tourist stereotypes :D But Peader you missed out on teaching him the most quintessential Irish phrase... "An bhfuil cead agam dul go dtí an leithris, m'á sé do thuil é?"
+1 for the avoid Templebar tip though! Too many ripped off tourists...

Sean's Bar is in my home town of Athlone, Westmeath. It's a great spot for live traditional Irish music and part of the pub was restored to the building of the 900s. 😀

"Ireland without beer is like Argentina without salsa".... Is this for real?
Weeeee do not drink as much as people think!!!! 😠😠😠
I know plenty of people who don't drink. Many may start into that scene but don't feel obligated to do it if they see it as something that they don't want to do. Make up your own mind👍 you will always come across the odd few who'd be like "ah gwan sure the one pint wouldnt do any harm!" Which'll nearly always turn into about 7 pints and a few shots 😂
Enjoying yourself and staying casual is key
He should've said argentinians without Meat.
Yo...... I think German and Aussie drinks more beer than Irish

Yeah, but... perspective... as in the OC was about perspective...
The wife and I like Ireland very very much, we went there since 2007 and upto the pandamic we visited at least 3 times a year. Last weekend of january for the tradfest and some weekends just in Dublin and a 2 weeks vacation traveling the Isle from side to side with a whalewatch adventure in the south with Nick Slocumb from Baltimore. This was our dreamstay every year. We saw the U.S. , Australia , New-Zealand, Canada and several other spots on the globe , but every time coming "home" to ireland ....we couldn't stop smiling.
