This is my thoughts on this song, I think it was originaly recorded in Eb and then they decided that these songs sounded better in D and instead of re-recording Refuse and Territory they just slowed the tapes down. I have always thought these songs sound strange and thats part of why its hard to transcrip it becuase I have played it both ways and both sound correct at different times. 5, 1, 0,0 sounds the most correct to me and the end riff is it not 0, 0, 0, 1/3, its 0, 0, 0, 1/2, second ftret on the A string.
If you want you need you change (easily) the tune of any song (I do this with songs i want to play without changing the tune of my guitar). Use a program called Audacity. Its free. One thing you can do too is partialy erase the vocals.
Great videos but if you watch andreas play it live the verse is 4 to 1 and also the fast-is chugging part is open instead of being on the first fret.. it is clearest to see 8n there quarantine session with Dave ellefson guesting on bass

I think you got confused listening because they were playing Jackson's with floyds and detuned. When they dig in, it makes the note sharp and you're misinterpreting that as being a whole fret up.
A lot of older Anthrax and Metallica recordings had this quirk as well. Like when Scott digs in on the chorus of Among the Living, the open E's sound a lot like Fs, but Scott will tell you it's E's.

I read in a guitar magazine in the early 1990s where Max said sometimes his playing sounds a semitone higher because of the way he palm mutes. It appears he puts quite a bit of pressure on the low E to get a really aggressive chugging sound.

But it may be 5 2 0 0 in the studio version, like you said. Some people may play it 5 1 0 0 but Andreas Kisser doesn't (and neither did Max when he actually played the guitar).

You know, I have the official Tab book (by Cherry Lane Music) of that album and the riff there is 5-2-0-0. I don't trust the Tab books 100%, that's why I always try to transcribe music by myself. But in this case the book confirmed it. Anyway, like I said people play it differently, this is just my take on the song. Cheers!

It's 5th fret to the 1st fret to open twice from what I've seen him play in many concerts.
