Funeral Plans Revealed for Rugby Legend Rob Burrow
The funeral plans for former rugby player Rob Burrow have been disclosed, allowing fans of the ex-Leeds Rhinos star to pay their respects. Burrow, who passed away at the age of 41 earlier this month after a four-year battle with motor neurone disease (MND), will have a private funeral on 7 July. This date holds special significance as it is annually celebrated by the club as Rob Burrow Day, in honor of the iconic number seven shirt he wore during his illustrious career.
In a gesture to the public, the details of Burrow's funeral procession have been shared so that fans can honor him and his family. The cortege will travel along the A656 (Park Road), passing the Xscape leisure complex on their right as it heads towards the M62 junction. The route continues along the A639 towards Pontefract, passing Pontefract Racecourse, and then turning onto Park Lane (B6134) near Pontefract Tanshelf train station.
The procession will proceed along Ackton Lane into Ackton, before turning left onto Sewerbridge Lane and Common Side Lane (B6133) towards Featherstone. At the War Horse sculpture, the cortege will turn left, slowing momentarily at Featherstone Lions ARLFC's ground on Wakefield Road (A645). The cars will again slow as they pass through Featherstone, near the area where Burrow played his junior rugby.
As the procession continues along Pontefract Lane towards the crematorium, members of the public are requested to disperse, allowing the Burrow family a few private moments before arriving at the crematorium for the service.
A joint statement from the family and Leeds Rhinos emphasized the need for privacy during the crematorium service, which will be for invited guests only: "The purpose of publishing the route is to give the public the chance to pay their respects before allowing Rob's family and friends to grieve his loss in private. We hope everyone can respect these wishes. There will be no live streaming of the service."
Members of the public are advised to be in position from 1pm on the day.
Additionally, Leeds City Council and the Lord Mayor of Leeds will host an invite-only civic reception in honor of Burrow on 12 July at 11am. And for this event, will be live streamed, with links to be published nearer the time.
