If you aren't allowed to turn on a red light the reasoning generally is 1) the view is partially or completely obstructed to make a safe decision to turn or 2) It is an extremely high volume traffic area and thus protected turns obviously make things much safer. Enjoyed the video! Thanks!
American here and I found this video quite entertaining! Right on red is allowed but you have to stop, look if the coast is clear, then you can go. If there is a “no turn on red” sign then you can’t do that and have to wait for green. Also just use Drive, Reverse, and Park and you are good. Parking brake is unnecessary unless you are parking on a hill. Easiest at gas stations is paying with credit card at the pump if you can, otherwise yes you have to go in and prepay with cash.
Yeah thanks for that info because the wife and I (British) will be going to Florida in four weeks and I haven't driven in the US in 8 years or so, so, a bit rusty about certain rules ie... turning right on red or when not to do it and how to approach it.
@@Dennizzz119 The problem is that whether or not you have a card, you'll have to enter a postal code coupled with that card. And since you don't have a US postal code, you cannot use a card. So in any case, you'd have to go inside, pay (by card or cash, or leave your card if you think that's ok), then fill up and return.
Good tip about downloading the google maps in the UK before travel. I’ve just come back from Florida and did exactly that. You don’t get live traffic flows on the maps but that’s minor. Tune into local radio for traffic updates, in my experience I4 has incidents frequently so it’s good to listen out for that and reroute accordingly. The other tip being from the UK is put your phone in AIRPLANE mode. Offline maps still works great but it means your phone won’t automatically connect to a US carrier and start using 4G data unbeknown to you because the costs are extortionate. My other advice is don’t be afraid to drive I find it MUCH easier to drive in the US on their wide open roads in an automatic, it’s like driving a car at your local arcade! One last tip when you pick up your rental please take 15 mins to familiarise yourself with the indicators, rain wipers, hazard lights etc. It can often rain in Florida very heavy and you don’t want to be on I4 with no idea how to turn the wipers on!!
I know this is a Florida video, but FYI... New York City is the one exception to the Right on Red rule; Right on Red is NOT ALLOWED in NYC UNLESS otherwise posted.
You can turn right on red, except when there is a sign that says "No Turn on Red" or "No Turn." Usually they'll have it next to the traffic sign and on the side of the road at the same time. You must stop completely and then you can make a right turn. If you see someone go right, even if it says "No Turn On Red," it means they're breaking the law and a police could issue a ticket. It's similar to a "No U-Turn" as well. Keep in mind that many traffic lights in Orlando have cameras as well that may be able to catch you as well. In Disney in a few right-turn intersections they have big signs with a prohibitory sign with a right turn and a red circle with a line across it, instead of outright saying "No Right Turn." Sometimes it says something similar to "Right Turn After Stop" which is kind of confusing, but basically means you can go make a right turn on red after you stop, which is redundant, since you're supposed to do that anyway, but I guess they put the sign so that you're extra careful. Also, when filling up gas, you don't have to tell them what kind of gas you're getting, since you choose what kind of gas you want when you go to the pump. You can choose whatever you want, based on what you pick. Also, there's another sign called the "yield sign" which is a red triangle, and what that means is that you don't have to stop completely, but you must watch out for another lane, because they have the right of way (they have get priority over you) and you have to yield or even stop, if there's another car going, and then you can go when no car is coming. The yield sign is used on roundabouts where you don't have to make complete stops, but you must yield and let other cars go, which means you have to let the other car go if a car is going. Also in intersections when you're entering highways, there is a yield sign for people entering the highway. The difference between yield and stop, is that with a yield, it's safe enough that you don't have to stop completely and can go if you see no car is going, but you must yield and slow down and let another car go, if there is a car going. On a stop sign, you're meant to stop completely, even if no car is going. This is a great video. It's very helpful for British people!

2:20 The purpose of Neutral in a car with an automatic transmission is to protect the transmission if out have to move the car manually (i.e push it or have it towed). No one uses it at stoplights or anything. In some cars you might have L instead of S, L stands for low which is a low gear, used when going down a hill (usually if you are towing something, or need engine braking for some other reason)
Still binge watching all your videos and loving it! Looks like you covered everything and the right on red issue was addressed in the comments. I remember seeing a video where you saw a flashing yellow light and weren't sure what that was. If the light is flashing yellow you can proceed with caution. If the light is flashing red treat it as a stop sign. A lot of times businesses or schools that are closed might have the flashing red, while the main street traffic will have flashing yellow to proceed through. During operating hours those lights would most likely change back to normally operating traffic lights
6: 23 I made that mistake too when driving out of san Francisco after a 1 hour commute on the freeway during the night. Fortunately the road I entered was quiet and I instantly realised it when I saw a car ahead blaring out it's horn. That was my only mistake during the whole rental. The airport rentals are pretty easy as all the cars have keys inside of them which then get scanned during the exit, the stop signs are a pain in the arse though, a roundabout would solve that problem.
Try overtake school buses. If you keep behind you will be stopping every few minutes to let pupils on and off. Also you MUST stop as soon as the buses stop signs appear. Even on a dual carriageway (highway) in the opposite direction if the central reservation is less than 3ft wide.
Good ! I’m from Brazil and I’ve experienced nearly the same things as you did. Today I’ve been honked twice, one for driving a bit below 45 mph, secondly for stopping at the red light to make a right turn. All in all, driving in Orlando is such a pleasant thing.

You forgot to mention when turning right on a red light you MUST come to a complete stop before continuing. The only time in florida you are not allowed to turn right on a red light or make a u- turn is when it is posted.
Three things to mention to our international friends coming to the states. One, You must come to a complete stop before turning right on red if allowed. New York City is the exception to this there are no right turns on red in NYC. If you don’t come to a complete stop you can be ticketed. It’s Almost a guarantied ticket if it’s a red light camera. A Good rule is to count to five if it’s a red light camera, and stop behind the white line before you go. Two, interstate driving with in city limits is slower the speed increases out of city’s. Also the rule is to overtake in the left lanes not the right. Even though people do it, you can get a ticket for passing on the right. Three, Florida in general is much easier driving compared to larger cities in the USA like NYC, Chicago, LA, etc… these are completely different beasts some locals who live outside these city’s will not even drive within because of how intense it is. Take that into consideration if it’s your first time driving in the states. P.S there are many erratic drivers in the USA and just because one car did something doesn’t mean you should. Eventually the law will catch up to that erratic driver.

Watch out for "4 way stop" junctions and junctions that have flashing red lights (turning them into 4 way stop junctions). The rule of thumb is that each of the 4 directions take turn to cross - one car at a time. - Think of it as a North, South, East, West operation. However, some people are impatient and will jump the line so watch out for them too. Basically stop at the junction and let the first car in line from each other direction move off first - then it's your turn.

Hahaha! Orlando drivers are a bit more unpredictable lol. I'm living in Orlando currently and have a motorcycle as my transportation. There's quite a mix of international drivers and some locals who deal with it on the regular and have become irritated and aggressive drivers. I'm not a very impatient driver or rider, but I do tend to dart around a bit on my bike to avoid bad situations and also to get places. I'm from the US and just temporarily relocated here for the year and Florida has this reputation for drivers in Orlando, Tampa, and Miami. Other US cities have it the same or worse. New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Houston, Dallas are all cities that come to mind. The people not turning right on red signals confuse me too - some are US citizens and just can't drive. Driving skills aren't exactly a commonly proficient skill in the US, and even less so as everyone is on their mobile phone as they drive. There are relatively few people in the US who can drive a manual gearbox, so seeing the opposite is quite amusing. I personally love a manual gearbox, and after purchasing an automatic vehicle I stomped the floor and reached for the gear shift many times at stops lol. I understand that feeling. Can you please tell your European counterparts that I cannot filter on my motorcycle here, so please do not try to share the lane with me. I will get ticketed and my bike impounded by the police for lane splitting or filtering. I can only do such things in California. For whatever reason the US has entirely different convictions on filtering than the rest of the world. While the world seems to think that it makes plenty of sense, the drivers in the US feel that it's not fair and since they as a general rule have a dislike for motorcyclist, they have no inclination whatsoever to allow motorcycles to have any advantage over a 4 wheeled vehicle. So in short - the cagers in the US despise me, and the international drivers here seem to think that there's no issue with coming into my lane and forcing me out or into a lane splitting/filtering situation. If you make another video - just mention the subject in passing. Maybe if a visitor plans on riding a motorcycle here that they cannot filter.

American Driving Tips: Right on red... pretty much always unless there’s a sign that says you can’t. There may be signs sometimes that say “no right on red 6am-6pm.” Just means it’s busier during the day and it’s safer to turn outside of those timeframes. An old trick I’ve learned is actually using the white line on the right side as a guide UNLESS there is a curb. I’ve been in Ireland and blew a tire on a curb using that. It’s a tricky adjustment either way you go. I’m not sure if you picked up on it or not, but on the highway, the right lane acts as the slower lane. I’d recommend always staying on the right if it’s uncomfortable to you. Nobody will get mad at you, because they can just pass you. It’s always good to physically check your blind spot before changing lanes because people move so quick in the U.S.
I'm a Brit who has been driving in Florida for many years, this is a brilliant video with a lot of very good advice, one thing that is not mentioned is flashing of light's, in the UK we quit often flash other drivers to say we are giving way to them, in Florida if you flash a driver they will not know what you mean and will think your trying to make trouble.
In Texas, if someone flashes their lights at you, they are either warning you that there's an obstruction in the road ahead of you, or they might mean there's a cop down the road with a reader a radar gun checking everyone's speed. The latter isn't as common anymore, but you might will come across it. Either way, just take it as a sign that there might be some issue up ahead. If you get flashed at night, check to make sure you aren't blinding people with your high beams.
In all states that allow turning right on a red signal, the one important thing you need to remember is FIRST STOP, then turn right after making sure nothing is coming from your left. If a patrolman catches you turning without stopping, you've got yourself a ticket (2 license points). Many locations do have both signals and perhaps a yield sign covering the right turning lane. At a yield sign, you don't necessarily have to stop, but do watch for oncoming traffic, which has the right of way.

t his is entertaining for people who come from countries that now mostly have autos! The real danger of driving on the opposite side of the road comes when there is no traffic - such as pulling onto the road in remote parts of Australia. When there are other cars around you can see plenty of reminders, but no traffic and its easy to get killed.
It's funny how driving an Automatic Transmission is an alien concept to foreigners. It is literally the easiest thing to do. Driving a Manual is overly complicated. Having to worry about the hand brake, shifting gears with the clutch pedal, and matching RPM with the gear shift.
I was absolutely terrified of driving in the US, especially when I was given a huge Chevrolet Tahoe when I drive a Fiat 500 here, but it's so straightforward, I loved it! Found it harder to adjust to driving a manual when I got home 😁

You would use neutral if the car stalled or ran out of petrol and you had to push it or if it needed to be towed. Most people on level roads don't set the parking brake. It comes in useful is when your on a steep hill and park. When you try to go back to drive on older cars you will be fighting to get it into gear because the transmission would be locked up. So on older cars you apply the hand break before putting it to park. Then the parking break holds the weight. To leave, apply foot brake, select gear, release parking brake. Again this is for parking on a steep incline. Right turn on red only after stopping first in most states. No right turn on red sign is telling you don't do it because you cannot see the traffic or many accidents have happened at the site.

They're different speed limits for different types of roads in different parts of America like in Texas the speed limit is 80 but that is because Texas is speared out so much
Neutral is there for when the car needs to be pushed or towed -- and so you do not go directly from Drive to Reverse and vice versa. You DO NOT put the car into neutral while sitting at a signal light.
Where I'm from, Washington State, you're allowed to turn right on red unless there's a sign posted that specifically says otherwise. Sometimes there will be signs restricting right-on-red turns between certain hours (like morning and evening rush hour times). You're also allowed to make a left on a red light (or stop sign) if turning onto a one-way street in that direction. I believe this can only be done if you're in the left-most lane, just like right turns.
About driving an automatic with the floorboard shifter. You don't have to push the release button to go from Reverse to Drive. You can just pull the lever down to drive. But to go back up to Reverse or Park, you have to push the release button.
Remember that traffic laws differ from state to state. I live in Florida, and I've seen people with out-of-state license plates hesitate to turn on red. They may be from a state that doesn't allow right-turn-on-red, or they may not know if Florida has that law and are afraid of making a traffic violation. I sometimes tap on my horn as an indication that they should go. I go to Disney a lot, and I think that many of the cars that are going faster and switching lanes left and right are people who work there. That's their daily commute, and they want to get around all the slow tourist traffic. Sometimes the rapid lane changes are because the driver has just realized he should be turning ahead and wants to be in the correct lane.
Left turns: busier roads will almost always have a special turning lane with yellow lines on both sides. You get in that lane and wait for an opening and then go. For roads without a turning lane the cars behind you will either wait for you to turn or if there is more than one lane per direction they would move to the right and pass (and on some roads they will move to the shoulder and pass you even though that is technically not legal). Four way stops. If there are stop signs for all four directions, all must stop, and then first in first to go. Speed limits: most places have 70mph freeway limits except near cities, then it slows to 65 or 55. A few states only go up to 65. Toll roads: rare in much of the USA. Lanes: faster to left, slower to right but rarely enforced unless you are creeping along at 55 in the left lane. You would probably get pulled over for that. There are also HOV lanes on the left in many cities on the interstates. They are for a minimum of two persons per vehicle. Manual transmissions: most USA drivers no longer know how to drive a manual because they are so rare. Only sports cars and trucks have them for the most part, and pretty rare even then. I learned manual on a 72 beetle. Once mastered, any other stick feels easy. The clutch release before stalling felt like about 1/4 inch (a few mm). Parking brake: rarely used by anyone unless on a hill. Neutral: for towing, pushing a dead car, etc. You would never use it driving. Getting gas (petrol): almost all Americans pay at the pump with their credit/debit card and never go inside unless they need to buy something or use the restroom. Because of auto transmissions, there are lots of distracted drivers. It is a serious problem. Lots of people playing on their phones, etc.

Great Video. We've been driving in Orlando since 1988 (First time was in Kissimmee). For the first few years Americans were Great "Oh Your English/British..No Problem" But the last couple of years (2010 ON) They have lost there Patients. Driving in Florida in particular is easier than driving in the UK..the cars are automatic so no clutch..the car will move as soon as you let off the brake..just remember to use your right foot only..and leave your left foot alone..gas is cheap..everything is marked for you..I would if your in a villa just drive around the estate for a practise..the only bad point is nobody indicates...at lot of the cars indicators are red not yellow..so hard to see!Just keep your eyes on the signs and don’t worry if you miss a turning on the I4 for instance as there are multiple points to turn off for lake buena vista (Disney)!Just remember use your Right foot only and your left foot for the parking brake as your park...
You can turn right at a red signal after stopping. You must stop, look, and then proceed. But it is not a requirement to turn on red after stopping. If you can't see well due to limited sight distance, then you are not required to make the turn on red. You can always wait until the green signal.
It might seem confusing, but there are traffic laws at the federal (national) level, the state level, and at the county / city level in the USA. However, right turns on red are legal everywhere in the country except if they're prohibited by law in a particular jurisdiction (like New York City), or at individual intersections. In the latter case, there will be signs that say so. You might also encounter confusing signs that say in big letters "No Right Turn On Red" but then, below that in smaller letters, "Except Right Lane After Stop". These will be posted where there are two lanes that are marked as right turn only, but you can only turn right on red from the one on the far right. In such situations, drivers will often not read the wording on the entire sign and will sit unmoving when they could be turning.
You are wrong undertaking IS NOT ALLOWED in the UK ALL vehicles in theory are to stay in the left hand lane THE SLOW LANE the outside lanes are only supposed to be for overtaking THE FAST LANES but once everyone gets a licence this is quickly forgotton
Neutral is what you put your car in if it's broke down/out of gas, so that you can push it. You as also put it in Neutral if you have to tow your car, if the drive wheels are the ones that are still on the pavement.

the places with tolls that I'm aware of is in Florida, Oklahoma, New York and New Jersey, Chicago, but the overwhelming part of America doesn't have many tolls. Tolls are usually for brand new projects that haven't been paid for.
As far as I’m aware if you have a rental you need to get a sun pass prior at the rental or if you drive trough the sun pass express without one you will get a fine.
And obviously stop before the white line, then inch forward to get a view of the traffic. There is a notorious right turn where I live, the cross street is angled so you can't see anything until you're 10ft past the line, and nearly every person stops past the line and triggers the camera.
As others have stated. You can turn right on red unless there is a no turn on red sign and it is safe to do so. You MUST come to a complete stop before turning right on red and as you would expect, you must give right of way to traffic with a green light. If there are two turn lanes, only the right most turn lane can legally turn on red however, a lot of people do not follow this law (like no passing a left turning car on the shoulder) You may find some people who do not turn on red. This is also acceptable however, that may cause the person behind you to beep.

Right on red, can do it when theres no signs saying u cant usually saying 'no turn on red' buses and trucks are not allowed to turn on red regardless... ur also not technically allowed to overtake in every lane, but no cop ik of would pull u over for it
At petrol stations, you can go directly to the pump and insert your credit card after filling the tank. If you’ve got cash, go to the convenient shop, prepay any amount, go to the pump and fill the tank. If it’s ok, just drive, but if your over paid, fo back to the shop and get a refund. Easy as 1, 2, 3. PS they sell petrol by gallons, 4 liters, so don’t be scared if you see $ 2,30 or something like that. It’s not for the litre.
I’m from Virginia and what I learned is that turning right on a red is a choice lol you don’t have to go if you don’t want to, but you can go unless you are told otherwise by a sign. Usually, majority of drivers go but there will be those that just don’t want to go and want to wait for the light to turn green. If anyone beeps at you, they technically aren’t suppose to beep. They have no reason to. Drivers that beep at me tend to just be impatient drivers and think that their way is the right way. I was even beeped at when the light to turn left JUST popped so take no offense to them at all because you are just being a careful drivers. Now if they beep at you because you are about to hit them or are maybe serving onto their lane or anything like that, then that’s a justified beep. But yeah, I would say that’s why some cars turn right on red and some don’t; it’s just that we have the choice of doing either. Now laws can vary from state to state so just brushing up the rules of the road on whatever state you plan on visiting is ideal just in case. Hell, even pumping gas are different! In a few states, it’s illegal to pump your own gas 🤷🏻♀️

Right on red is legal in most states... Where it is legal: You can always turn right on red unless a sign says you can't, so long as the right on red is legal in that state. Some signs, like in Ohio, take it a step further and will say 'No right turn on red' in big letters, and then 'except curb lane' below it. This means that if you are in the lane closest to the curb, you can turn right on red - but the next lane over can't.
edvaira6891 They’re not that rare in the UK at all these days. My last four cars have all been automatics (DSG) and the general trend for German manufacturers is towards automatics at the moment.
Been driving for 8 years and never once driven an automatic. Just ordered a new car and it's a manual. Might be my last manual car as I'm really considering going full EV once the new car goes back.
Automatics are around, but if you learn to drive in one, you are restricted to only driving automatics. Drove an automatic in Florida, hated it, never felt in control. Never again
I don't know about other states, but in California, unless there's a sign posted that says otherwise, you MAY make a right turn on a red light; it's not you MUST make a red turn on a red light. The person behind you might start honking at you if it's clear and you're not making the right turn on red, but you have every right to wait until the green light. Also, if there's a red right turn arrow, you cannot make a right turn until you see the green light or a green right arrow. And of course you need to yield to pedestrians. For example, while making a right turn on a red light, even if there are no cars, coming, if you look to the left and see that a pedestrian has started crossing the street towards you, even though they are walking slow and you know you can beat them making the right turn, you have to wait for them to complete the crossing, and then you can make the right turn. If they are crossing the street walking AWAY from you, you can make the right turn after they clear your car.
If you are merging onto a road, say from an On Ramp, you MUST YIELD to any traffic on the main road. There will (usually) be a YIELD sign. So many drivers ignore this and figure Me-Me-Me. If you hit someone, it will be your fault: fines, points, and insurance rate raises. Simply put, if you hit someone from the right, you will pay. Also; if you hit someone from the rear, it's your fault. Doesn't matter if they slam their brakes on in front of you, it's your fault, you didn't leave enough space to safely brake, you didn't have control of your car.
Disney in Detail Florida heat for me is not to bad. Where I'm from it can get up to 48c and it's dry not humid. Butttt I do have to admit the UK was pretty cold to me whene I was there for Christmas 2 years ago and y'all's summer during the London 2012 Olympics was not as hot as I was expecting. Not to get you even more confused but in some states (such as Oregon, where I'm from) you can take a left on a red when the street you are turning onto is a one-way street (some states it is from a one- way to a one-way street others it can be two-way onto a one-way). Obviously use extreme caution in those scenarios.
the only time you can't turn right on red is when there is a sign prohibiting it. Otherwise feel free to turn right on red anytime if the traffic is clear of course and if you feel up to it. I would imagine those who didn't turn right on red didn't feel up to it. They probably weren't awake enough to do it. I know I've hesitated a few times for that reason.
Turning right on 'Red' is permitted UNLESS there is a sign on the light saying "No Turn On Red". However. when turning right on red you MUST come to a stop before turning and yield to traffic that is coming from the left (like a Give Way junction in the UK). It is only New York City that does not allow 'default' right turn on red - and only if clearly indicated can you turn right on red in NYC.
If you aren't allowed to turn on a red light the reasoning generally is 1) the view is partially or completely obstructed to make a safe decision to turn or 2) It is an extremely high volume traffic area and thus protected turns obviously make things much safer. Enjoyed the video! Thanks!

Our (I live in South Carolina) rule of thumb for right turn on red lights is "free right on red unless otherwise posted".
I'm an Indian driver learning to drive in SF/ this video was very very helpful.
American here and I found this video quite entertaining! Right on red is allowed but you have to stop, look if the coast is clear, then you can go. If there is a “no turn on red” sign then you can’t do that and have to wait for green. Also just use Drive, Reverse, and Park and you are good. Parking brake is unnecessary unless you are parking on a hill. Easiest at gas stations is paying with credit card at the pump if you can, otherwise yes you have to go in and prepay with cash.

Yeah thanks for that info because the wife and I (British) will be going to Florida in four weeks and I haven't driven in the US in 8 years or so, so, a bit rusty about certain rules ie... turning right on red or when not to do it and how to approach it.
At most of the touristy places you want to go that is the case and in cities. In most small towns you can pump then pay.
Can you elaborate more on the gasstation issue? Back home in Holland we pay after pumping gas.
@@Dennizzz119 The problem is that whether or not you have a card, you'll have to enter a postal code coupled with that card. And since you don't have a US postal code, you cannot use a card. So in any case, you'd have to go inside, pay (by card or cash, or leave your card if you think that's ok), then fill up and return.
Good tip about downloading the google maps in the UK before travel. I’ve just come back from Florida and did exactly that. You don’t get live traffic flows on the maps but that’s minor. Tune into local radio for traffic updates, in my experience I4 has incidents frequently so it’s good to listen out for that and reroute accordingly. The other tip being from the UK is put your phone in AIRPLANE mode. Offline maps still works great but it means your phone won’t automatically connect to a US carrier and start using 4G data unbeknown to you because the costs are extortionate. My other advice is don’t be afraid to drive I find it MUCH easier to drive in the US on their wide open roads in an automatic, it’s like driving a car at your local arcade! One last tip when you pick up your rental please take 15 mins to familiarise yourself with the indicators, rain wipers, hazard lights etc. It can often rain in Florida very heavy and you don’t want to be on I4 with no idea how to turn the wipers on!!

the right on red is according to state/city laws. and you should still come to a stop before making that turn, unless you have an arrow.
You can turn right on red, except when there is a sign that says "No Turn on Red" or "No Turn." Usually they'll have it next to the traffic sign and on the side of the road at the same time. You must stop completely and then you can make a right turn.
If you see someone go right, even if it says "No Turn On Red," it means they're breaking the law and a police could issue a ticket. It's similar to a "No U-Turn" as well. Keep in mind that many traffic lights in Orlando have cameras as well that may be able to catch you as well. In Disney in a few right-turn intersections they have big signs with a prohibitory sign with a right turn and a red circle with a line across it, instead of outright saying "No Right Turn."
Sometimes it says something similar to "Right Turn After Stop" which is kind of confusing, but basically means you can go make a right turn on red after you stop, which is redundant, since you're supposed to do that anyway, but I guess they put the sign so that you're extra careful.
Also, when filling up gas, you don't have to tell them what kind of gas you're getting, since you choose what kind of gas you want when you go to the pump. You can choose whatever you want, based on what you pick.
Also, there's another sign called the "yield sign" which is a red triangle, and what that means is that you don't have to stop completely, but you must watch out for another lane, because they have the right of way (they have get priority over you) and you have to yield or even stop, if there's another car going, and then you can go when no car is coming. The yield sign is used on roundabouts where you don't have to make complete stops, but you must yield and let other cars go, which means you have to let the other car go if a car is going. Also in intersections when you're entering highways, there is a yield sign for people entering the highway. The difference between yield and stop, is that with a yield, it's safe enough that you don't have to stop completely and can go if you see no car is going, but you must yield and slow down and let another car go, if there is a car going. On a stop sign, you're meant to stop completely, even if no car is going.

2:20 The purpose of Neutral in a car with an automatic transmission is to protect the transmission if out have to move the car manually (i.e push it or have it towed). No one uses it at stoplights or anything. In some cars you might have L instead of S, L stands for low which is a low gear, used when going down a hill (usually if you are towing something, or need engine braking for some other reason)

Still binge watching all your videos and loving it! Looks like you covered everything and the right on red issue was addressed in the comments. I remember seeing a video where you saw a flashing yellow light and weren't sure what that was. If the light is flashing yellow you can proceed with caution. If the light is flashing red treat it as a stop sign. A lot of times businesses or schools that are closed might have the flashing red, while the main street traffic will have flashing yellow to proceed through. During operating hours those lights would most likely change back to normally operating traffic lights
6: 23 I made that mistake too when driving out of san Francisco after a 1 hour commute on the freeway during the night. Fortunately the road I entered was quiet and I instantly realised it when I saw a car ahead blaring out it's horn. That was my only mistake during the whole rental. The airport rentals are pretty easy as all the cars have keys inside of them which then get scanned during the exit, the stop signs are a pain in the arse though, a roundabout would solve that problem.
Try overtake school buses. If you keep behind you will be stopping every few minutes to let pupils on and off. Also you MUST stop as soon as the buses stop signs appear. Even on a dual carriageway (highway) in the opposite direction if the central reservation is less than 3ft wide.
Good ! I’m from Brazil and I’ve experienced nearly the same things as you did. Today I’ve been honked twice, one for driving a bit below 45 mph, secondly for stopping at the red light to make a right turn. All in all, driving in Orlando is such a pleasant thing.

You forgot to mention when turning right on a red light you MUST come to a complete stop before continuing. The only time in florida you are not allowed to turn right on a red light or make a u- turn is when it is posted.
Three things to mention to our international friends coming to the states. One, You must come to a complete stop before turning right on red if allowed. New York City is the exception to this there are no right turns on red in NYC. If you don’t come to a complete stop you can be ticketed. It’s Almost a guarantied ticket if it’s a red light camera. A Good rule is to count to five if it’s a red light camera, and stop behind the white line before you go. Two, interstate driving with in city limits is slower the speed increases out of city’s. Also the rule is to overtake in the left lanes not the right. Even though people do it, you can get a ticket for passing on the right. Three, Florida in general is much easier driving compared to larger cities in the USA like NYC, Chicago, LA, etc… these are completely different beasts some locals who live outside these city’s will not even drive within because of how intense it is. Take that into consideration if it’s your first time driving in the states. P.S there are many erratic drivers in the USA and just because one car did something doesn’t mean you should. Eventually the law will catch up to that erratic driver.

Watch out for "4 way stop" junctions and junctions that have flashing red lights (turning them into 4 way stop junctions). The rule of thumb is that each of the 4 directions take turn to cross - one car at a time. - Think of it as a North, South, East, West operation. However, some people are impatient and will jump the line so watch out for them too. Basically stop at the junction and let the first car in line from each other direction move off first - then it's your turn.

Hahaha! Orlando drivers are a bit more unpredictable lol. I'm living in Orlando currently and have a motorcycle as my transportation. There's quite a mix of international drivers and some locals who deal with it on the regular and have become irritated and aggressive drivers. I'm not a very impatient driver or rider, but I do tend to dart around a bit on my bike to avoid bad situations and also to get places. I'm from the US and just temporarily relocated here for the year and Florida has this reputation for drivers in Orlando, Tampa, and Miami. Other US cities have it the same or worse. New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Houston, Dallas are all cities that come to mind. The people not turning right on red signals confuse me too - some are US citizens and just can't drive. Driving skills aren't exactly a commonly proficient skill in the US, and even less so as everyone is on their mobile phone as they drive. There are relatively few people in the US who can drive a manual gearbox, so seeing the opposite is quite amusing. I personally love a manual gearbox, and after purchasing an automatic vehicle I stomped the floor and reached for the gear shift many times at stops lol. I understand that feeling. Can you please tell your European counterparts that I cannot filter on my motorcycle here, so please do not try to share the lane with me. I will get ticketed and my bike impounded by the police for lane splitting or filtering. I can only do such things in California. For whatever reason the US has entirely different convictions on filtering than the rest of the world. While the world seems to think that it makes plenty of sense, the drivers in the US feel that it's not fair and since they as a general rule have a dislike for motorcyclist, they have no inclination whatsoever to allow motorcycles to have any advantage over a 4 wheeled vehicle. So in short - the cagers in the US despise me, and the international drivers here seem to think that there's no issue with coming into my lane and forcing me out or into a lane splitting/filtering situation. If you make another video - just mention the subject in passing. Maybe if a visitor plans on riding a motorcycle here that they cannot filter.

American Driving Tips:
Right on red... pretty much always unless there’s a sign that says you can’t. There may be signs sometimes that say “no right on red 6am-6pm.” Just means it’s busier during the day and it’s safer to turn outside of those timeframes.
An old trick I’ve learned is actually using the white line on the right side as a guide UNLESS there is a curb. I’ve been in Ireland and blew a tire on a curb using that. It’s a tricky adjustment either way you go.
I’m not sure if you picked up on it or not, but on the highway, the right lane acts as the slower lane. I’d recommend always staying on the right if it’s uncomfortable to you. Nobody will get mad at you, because they can just pass you. It’s always good to physically check your blind spot before changing lanes because people move so quick in the U.S.
I'm a Brit who has been driving in Florida for many years, this is a brilliant video with a lot of very good advice, one thing that is not mentioned is flashing of light's, in the UK we quit often flash other drivers to say we are giving way to them, in Florida if you flash a driver they will not know what you mean and will think your trying to make trouble.
In Texas, if someone flashes their lights at you, they are either warning you that there's an obstruction in the road ahead of you, or they might mean there's a cop down the road with a reader a radar gun checking everyone's speed. The latter isn't as common anymore, but you might will come across it. Either way, just take it as a sign that there might be some issue up ahead. If you get flashed at night, check to make sure you aren't blinding people with your high beams.

In all states that allow turning right on a red signal, the one important thing you need to remember is FIRST STOP, then turn right after making sure nothing is coming from your left. If a patrolman catches you turning without stopping, you've got yourself a ticket (2 license points). Many locations do have both signals and perhaps a yield sign covering the right turning lane. At a yield sign, you don't necessarily have to stop, but do watch for oncoming traffic, which has the right of way.
Right on Red is a ruling by state and generally stated as "Right on Red unless otherwise posted"

t his is entertaining for people who come from countries that now mostly have autos! The real danger of driving on the opposite side of the road comes when there is no traffic - such as pulling onto the road in remote parts of Australia. When there are other cars around you can see plenty of reminders, but no traffic and its easy to get killed.

It's funny how driving an Automatic Transmission is an alien concept to foreigners. It is literally the easiest thing to do. Driving a Manual is overly complicated. Having to worry about the hand brake, shifting gears with the clutch pedal, and matching RPM with the gear shift.
I was absolutely terrified of driving in the US, especially when I was given a huge Chevrolet Tahoe when I drive a Fiat 500 here, but it's so straightforward, I loved it! Found it harder to adjust to driving a manual when I got home 😁

Planning or looking at renting an car out in Florida next year never drove in Florida on my own it going to be very daunting for me planning to go in October 2020
You would use neutral if the car stalled or ran out of petrol and you had to push it or if it needed to be towed. Most people on level roads don't set the parking brake. It comes in useful is when your on a steep hill and park. When you try to go back to drive on older cars you will be fighting to get it into gear because the transmission would be locked up. So on older cars you apply the hand break before putting it to park. Then the parking break holds the weight. To leave, apply foot brake, select gear, release parking brake. Again this is for parking on a steep incline. Right turn on red only after stopping first in most states. No right turn on red sign is telling you don't do it because you cannot see the traffic or many accidents have happened at the site.

They're different speed limits for different types of roads in different parts of America like in Texas the speed limit is 80 but that is because Texas is speared out so much
Neutral is there for when the car needs to be pushed or towed -- and so you do not go directly from Drive to Reverse and vice versa. You DO NOT put the car into neutral while sitting at a signal light.

Been driving in the US since 1976. Never drove a manual. Never had to.
Where I'm from, Washington State, you're allowed to turn right on red unless there's a sign posted that specifically says otherwise. Sometimes there will be signs restricting right-on-red turns between certain hours (like morning and evening rush hour times).
You're also allowed to make a left on a red light (or stop sign) if turning onto a one-way street in that direction. I believe this can only be done if you're in the left-most lane, just like right turns.
About driving an automatic with the floorboard shifter. You don't have to push the release button to go from Reverse to Drive. You can just pull the lever down to drive. But to go back up to Reverse or Park, you have to push the release button.
Remember that traffic laws differ from state to state. I live in Florida, and I've seen people with out-of-state license plates hesitate to turn on red. They may be from a state that doesn't allow right-turn-on-red, or they may not know if Florida has that law and are afraid of making a traffic violation. I sometimes tap on my horn as an indication that they should go. I go to Disney a lot, and I think that many of the cars that are going faster and switching lanes left and right are people who work there. That's their daily commute, and they want to get around all the slow tourist traffic. Sometimes the rapid lane changes are because the driver has just realized he should be turning ahead and wants to be in the correct lane.
Left turns: busier roads will almost always have a special turning lane with yellow lines on both sides. You get in that lane and wait for an opening and then go. For roads without a turning lane the cars behind you will either wait for you to turn or if there is more than one lane per direction they would move to the right and pass (and on some roads they will move to the shoulder and pass you even though that is technically not legal).
Four way stops. If there are stop signs for all four directions, all must stop, and then first in first to go.
Speed limits: most places have 70mph freeway limits except near cities, then it slows to 65 or 55. A few states only go up to 65.
Toll roads: rare in much of the USA.
Lanes: faster to left, slower to right but rarely enforced unless you are creeping along at 55 in the left lane. You would probably get pulled over for that. There are also HOV lanes on the left in many cities on the interstates. They are for a minimum of two persons per vehicle.
Manual transmissions: most USA drivers no longer know how to drive a manual because they are so rare. Only sports cars and trucks have them for the most part, and pretty rare even then. I learned manual on a 72 beetle. Once mastered, any other stick feels easy. The clutch release before stalling felt like about 1/4 inch (a few mm).
Parking brake: rarely used by anyone unless on a hill.
Neutral: for towing, pushing a dead car, etc. You would never use it driving.
Getting gas (petrol): almost all Americans pay at the pump with their credit/debit card and never go inside unless they need to buy something or use the restroom.
Because of auto transmissions, there are lots of distracted drivers. It is a serious problem. Lots of people playing on their phones, etc.

Great Video. We've been driving in Orlando since 1988 (First time was in Kissimmee). For the first few years Americans were Great "Oh Your English/British..No Problem" But the last couple of years (2010 ON) They have lost there Patients. Just be careful And Respectful, were on Holiday but they Live Here!
Driving in Florida in particular is easier than driving in the UK..the cars are automatic so no clutch..the car will move as soon as you let off the brake..just remember to use your right foot only..and leave your left foot alone..gas is cheap..everything is marked for you..I would if your in a villa just drive around the estate for a practise..the only bad point is nobody indicates...at lot of the cars indicators are red not yellow..so hard to see!Just keep your eyes on the signs and don’t worry if you miss a turning on the I4 for instance as there are multiple points to turn off for lake buena vista (Disney)!Just remember use your Right foot only and your left foot for the parking brake as your park...
You can turn right at a red signal after stopping. You must stop, look, and then proceed. But it is not a requirement to turn on red after stopping. If you can't see well due to limited sight distance, then you are not required to make the turn on red. You can always wait until the green signal.

It might seem confusing, but there are traffic laws at the federal (national) level, the state level, and at the county / city level in the USA. However, right turns on red are legal everywhere in the country except if they're prohibited by law in a particular jurisdiction (like New York City), or at individual intersections. In the latter case, there will be signs that say so. You might also encounter confusing signs that say in big letters "No Right Turn On Red" but then, below that in smaller letters, "Except Right Lane After Stop". These will be posted where there are two lanes that are marked as right turn only, but you can only turn right on red from the one on the far right. In such situations, drivers will often not read the wording on the entire sign and will sit unmoving when they could be turning.
The law on undertaking is the same as UK . Both are legal on any multilane roads which includes motorways.
You are wrong undertaking IS NOT ALLOWED in the UK ALL vehicles in theory are to stay in the left hand lane THE SLOW LANE the outside lanes are only supposed to be for overtaking THE FAST LANES but once everyone gets a licence this is quickly forgotton
Neutral is what you put your car in if it's broke down/out of gas, so that you can push it. You as also put it in Neutral if you have to tow your car, if the drive wheels are the ones that are still on the pavement.

the places with tolls that I'm aware of is in Florida, Oklahoma, New York and New Jersey, Chicago, but the overwhelming part of America doesn't have many tolls. Tolls are usually for brand new projects that haven't been paid for.
This is true with any hire car.
As far as I’m aware if you have a rental you need to get a sun pass prior at the rental or if you drive trough the sun pass express without one you will get a fine.
You do need to come to a complete stop at a red light before turning right. I got a camera ticket (a few years ago) because I didn’t stop.

And obviously stop before the white line, then inch forward to get a view of the traffic. There is a notorious right turn where I live, the cross street is angled so you can't see anything until you're 10ft past the line, and nearly every person stops past the line and triggers the camera.

You can turn right on red unless there is a no turn on red sign and it is safe to do so. You MUST come to a complete stop before turning right on red and as you would expect, you must give right of way to traffic with a green light.
If there are two turn lanes, only the right most turn lane can legally turn on red however, a lot of people do not follow this law (like no passing a left turning car on the shoulder)
You may find some people who do not turn on red. This is also acceptable however, that may cause the person behind you to beep.
This would have been a help when we went to Vegas. Scared both of us ! Going to Florida hopefully next year, so will watch other videos about driving etc closer to the time

Right on red, can do it when theres no signs saying u cant usually saying 'no turn on red' buses and trucks are not allowed to turn on red regardless... ur also not technically allowed to overtake in every lane, but no cop ik of would pull u over for it
At petrol stations, you can go directly to the pump and insert your credit card after filling the tank. If you’ve got cash, go to the convenient shop, prepay any amount, go to the pump and fill the tank. If it’s ok, just drive, but if your over paid, fo back to the shop and get a refund. Easy as 1, 2, 3.
PS they sell petrol by gallons, 4 liters, so don’t be scared if you see $ 2,30 or something like that. It’s not for the litre.

I’m from Virginia and what I learned is that turning right on a red is a choice lol you don’t have to go if you don’t want to, but you can go unless you are told otherwise by a sign. Usually, majority of drivers go but there will be those that just don’t want to go and want to wait for the light to turn green. If anyone beeps at you, they technically aren’t suppose to beep. They have no reason to. Drivers that beep at me tend to just be impatient drivers and think that their way is the right way. I was even beeped at when the light to turn left JUST popped so take no offense to them at all because you are just being a careful drivers. Now if they beep at you because you are about to hit them or are maybe serving onto their lane or anything like that, then that’s a justified beep. But yeah, I would say that’s why some cars turn right on red and some don’t; it’s just that we have the choice of doing either.
Now laws can vary from state to state so just brushing up the rules of the road on whatever state you plan on visiting is ideal just in case. Hell, even pumping gas are different! In a few states, it’s illegal to pump your own gas 🤷🏻♀️

Right on red is legal in most states... Where it is legal:
You can always turn right on red unless a sign says you can't, so long as the right on red is legal in that state. Some signs, like in Ohio, take it a step further and will say 'No right turn on red' in big letters, and then 'except curb lane' below it. This means that if you are in the lane closest to the curb, you can turn right on red - but the next lane over can't.

edvaira6891 They’re not that rare in the UK at all these days. My last four cars have all been automatics (DSG) and the general trend for German manufacturers is towards automatics at the moment.
They're not super rare but I only know one person who drives an automatic here. I think it's becoming a lot more common though.
Yes majority of cars are manual drive which is what i have but do find automatics so much easier to drive
Been driving for 8 years and never once driven an automatic. Just ordered a new car and it's a manual. Might be my last manual car as I'm really considering going full EV once the new car goes back.
Automatics are around, but if you learn to drive in one, you are restricted to only driving automatics.

I don't know about other states, but in California, unless there's a sign posted that says otherwise, you MAY make a right turn on a red light; it's not you MUST make a red turn on a red light. The person behind you might start honking at you if it's clear and you're not making the right turn on red, but you have every right to wait until the green light. Also, if there's a red right turn arrow, you cannot make a right turn until you see the green light or a green right arrow. And of course you need to yield to pedestrians. For example, while making a right turn on a red light, even if there are no cars, coming, if you look to the left and see that a pedestrian has started crossing the street towards you, even though they are walking slow and you know you can beat them making the right turn, you have to wait for them to complete the crossing, and then you can make the right turn. If they are crossing the street walking AWAY from you, you can make the right turn after they clear your car.

If you are merging onto a road, say from an On Ramp, you MUST YIELD to any traffic on the main road. There will (usually) be a YIELD sign. So many drivers ignore this and figure Me-Me-Me. If you hit someone, it will be your fault: fines, points, and insurance rate raises. Simply put, if you hit someone from the right, you will pay. Also; if you hit someone from the rear, it's your fault. Doesn't matter if they slam their brakes on in front of you, it's your fault, you didn't leave enough space to safely brake, you didn't have control of your car.
I find it hard to believe that someone could possibly be confused about driving an automatic transmission.

Disney in Detail Florida heat for me is not to bad. Where I'm from it can get up to 48c and it's dry not humid. Butttt I do have to admit the UK was pretty cold to me whene I was there for Christmas 2 years ago and y'all's summer during the London 2012 Olympics was not as hot as I was expecting. I kind of prefer y'alls weather.

Not to get you even more confused but in some states (such as Oregon, where I'm from) you can take a left on a red when the street you are turning onto is a one-way street (some states it is from a one- way to a one-way street others it can be two-way onto a one-way). Obviously use extreme caution in those scenarios.
Honestly though, no one should give you a bad time for being cautious and just waiting for the green left turn signal in those situations.
the only time you can't turn right on red is when there is a sign prohibiting it. Otherwise feel free to turn right on red anytime if the traffic is clear of course and if you feel up to it. I would imagine those who didn't turn right on red didn't feel up to it. They probably weren't awake enough to do it. I know I've hesitated a few times for that reason.
Turning right on 'Red' is permitted UNLESS there is a sign on the light saying "No Turn On Red". However. when turning right on red you MUST come to a stop before turning and yield to traffic that is coming from the left (like a Give Way junction in the UK).
It is only New York City that does not allow 'default' right turn on red - and only if clearly indicated can you turn right on red in NYC.
