Minicurso dado por Benito Juárez Aubry (Instituto de Ciencias Nucleares de la UNAM) el jueves 22 de Febrero del 2018 en el Salón C216 del Instituto de Ciencias Nucleares de la UNAM. El minicurso es organizado por estudiantes del grupo de Teoría de cuerdas.
Abstract:
Quantum field theory in curved spacetimes has not only made remarkable theoretical predictions, such as the radiation of black holes and cosmological particle creation but can also be viewed as a vibrant field of mathematical physics in its own right. In this inviting course, we shall explain how the presence of generic spacetime curvature leads us to re-think our textbook formulation of field theory and quantisation, as there are generally no Poincaré spacetime isometries to guide us. Dealing mostly with free theories, we shall first explain some geometric, classical features of these field models, and then explain their quantisation in arbitrary globally hyperbolic curved spacetimes. Moreover, we shall explain what is the class of admissible states for free theories in curved (and flat!) spacetimes, and how these states lead to finite renormalised stress-energy tensor, an all-important observable for semi-classical gravity. An exciting application that we will cover is that of black hole Hawking radiation. Finally, we shall comment on the quantisation of fields in non-globally hyperbolic spacetimes, such as the well-known AdS spacetime. No background in quantum field theory or particle physics is required, but elementary knowledge of General Relativity should be useful.
