Number 70 is halfway across the field while 68 is reporting. 70 never reported. This is 1000% the refs fault. What is Decker supposed to do? Chase down the ref and confirm the head nod that he got after he said “Hey I’m reporting”. Give me a break
70 had reported multiple times throughout the game so he made an assumption that 70 was the only one reporting. The Lions tried to get cute and messed up.
@@asundelgun3487 the Lions messed up? So it’s too confusing to run a different play than what you’ve run previously? No. The refs messed up at the job they are paid to do. The lions did exactly what they are supposed to
What about the tripping play that they called on the Cowboys that should have been in the lions? They should have never been allowed to get the ball back. Go Cowboys!
The refs are employees following the orders of their employers. That is the reality. They do exactly as they are told and nobody making that kind of money wants to lose their job.
You want them to call out their own refs? Or fire them? What? New refs? That went great last time. They did take them off the playoffs. The only way to fix this would be to overhaul the reporting system altogether. Honestly it’s pretty janky to have multiple guys yelling at refs every play and the ref running over to relay the information to the defense. Kind of ridiculous when you think about it.
Rex couldn't be more wrong lost respect for him with this. Always thought he was smart, they had 2 timeouts still and there's no reason 3 guys shouldnt be by refs. Dan Campbell tried to be fancy and it bit him.
Missing a pass interference call is one thing, it sucks but it's understandable. The mistake made last night was unforgivable. He should be fired and investigated.
You all forget that one of the Dallas receivers ran on to the field, without his helmet, to argue the call with the ref. DPI flag picked up and no flag for unsportsmanlike.
I am so sick of officials NOT being held accountable in sports!!! All three of the major leagues fine you if you give ANY criticism of these guys. Meanwhile, they get to make bad calls that cost teams critical positioning in the regular seasons or even worse cost them a trip out of the postseason. THIS NEEDS TO BE FIXED!!! Lions WON!

I don't know if I'm just noticing more, but I feel like this year we are seeing more games determined by blatantly bad calls. As they said, mistakes happen, but some are so egregious looking that it makes you wonder about implications about gambling and corruption.
The oversized marketing of betting on NFL games, from commercials to so-called "betting analysts" posing as writers (see: Yahoo! Sports), makes me give the whole enterprise a big ol' stinkeye.
Exactly my thoughts. I just got into sports betting maybe a year and a half ago and the amount of times I have seen extremely popular parlays fail due to bad calls is actually insane. It’s got me leaning towards the “professional sports are rigged” side of the argument.
Exactly. Lions should have never been given the ball back after that screwed up tripping penalty on the Cowboys. This play and controversy should have never happened.
So that means they also review the bad tripping call that he made against Dallas that should have been Detroit like if they overturn anything it will open a can of worms
It's crazy n unfortunate. I'm a Dallas fan but I don't like winning a game because a ref made a big mistake. Detroit is a good team. And if my team doesn't make it to the Superbowl i hope Detroit does.
Thank you! I’m so tired of these couch officials/players/coaches trying to argue with people who actually played/coached in the game. The refs fucked up. It’s just that simple

They SHOULD be more obvious about it, so this kind of thing doesn't f*ck over their season. As usual, Rex Ryan is an idiot and gets it exactly wrong!

One, player rubs hands up and down on shirt to signal he's reporting as eligible. Two, he also has to tell the ref verbally. Three, the ref relays that info to the captain of the defense. Four, it is announced on the PA. Does this entire process really strike anyone as some vague rule you should try to mess with in order to gain a competitive advantage? Obviously not. Otherwise, why bother with this entire process? Campbell tried to get cute by messing with a rule that wasn't meant to be messed with. You can't blame coaches for trying to gain a competitive advantage any way they can, but the downside is that, once in a while, coaches fly too close to the sun and get burned. That's exactly what happened here. Dean Blandino said no ref would accept such shenanigans designed to trick an opponent, when the process is clearly designed for BOTH TEAMS TO KNOW who reports as eligible.
The ref ran away for no reason. Then threw a flag 20 seconds after the score was over. This was by NFL/sports-betting design. Not just for this game but for the playoff seeding.
49ers are gonna win out. I do not think this game is gonna end up affecting seeding that much. If it does, I'm sorry and I'd be willing to bite the bullet there 🤣
I think that ref got tunnel vision. He assumed 70 was reporting, was watching him run into the game, and when 68 told him he was reporting, his mind went to 70. Just sloppy, incompetent officiating. Maybe. LOL.
Alex Smith hit it on the head. The ref got conditioned the whole game to think it was 70, the ONE time they changed it up was on THAT play and instead of being on top of it, the ref autopiloted like he did the whole game and mistook 68 for 70. Dude mind fkd himself and didn’t want to admit it. Shame.

Thank god for Randy and Rex to keep the ref's accountable. Also Rex clarifying Campbell's talk about drawing it up pre-game that the Refs literally knew it was coming.
I'm not a fan of the lions but as a football fan this had me fuming. This play was PERFECTLY designed and drawn up by Dan Campbell, it literally couldn't have possibly been a more perfect trick play. This play was drawn up so perfectly they had #70 go towards the ref so the defense wouldn't know it was 68 reporting not 70 and the ref made an assumtion that very well may end up being the reason the lions get eliminated in the playoffs. Home field advantage is huge come playoffs
@@Penguin5x3Bull. Decker lined up as eligible, while 70 lined up as a guard. The Dallas defense has eyes and can see that. The play was perfectly executed and the ref lied and cheated.

That's crazy. I didn't know that both teams are supposed to draw out the trick plays for the refs before the game even starts. It's all a joke. Lions got tricky, and of the ref said the wrong number or not, Lions didn't stop it..
What nobody is talking about is the fact that the ref told the cowboys that #70 was eligible so they assumed #68 was NOT eligible and that's why he wasn't covered initially. The refs made a bad call for sure, but that catch may or may not have happened had the ref properly told the cowboys that #68 was eligible.

I mean jesus this guy has been responsible for the outcome of multiple big time moments in games.
There have been too many Sundays where we talk about officials instead of teams. This one single call changed the top of the entire NFC, this did not just affect the Lions. If the Lions win they take at least the #2 after the Philly loss. Who do you think Seattle and LA would rather play? Everyone has their take and, it's much more simple. The ref heard 68 but said 70 since 70 had been reporting all game long. He told the Cowboys 70, he has no choice but to throw the flag after the play is done, that's why the flags were so late. I'm quite sure the Cowboys instantly reminded him he said 70, even though he had 68 in his head. When you spend all game telling a team that 70 is eligible it's easy to say that number again by accident. This is reinforced by the fact that the coach went over the play with the ref before the game. He just said the wrong number by accident and because of that he had to throw the flag. You can't penalize the Cowboys because you told them the wrong number. I would rather him be a man and own up to it than be a coward and pretend he did not screw it up.

Unbelievable Sam acting shocked that the lions were trying to confuse the Cowboys by not letting them know who is eligible until the ref says it. That's kinda the game of football. not letting your opponents know your next move. I think it was more of understanding how the ref could become confused. I get the point of it, but when you spend nearly 3 hours with the same number reporting and he's one of the three coming up to you on the final play, it's an easy assumption. I don't understand why they players didn't read the body language. 2 of them were a couple of feet away, 70 running over. All three clearly had to see him point specifically to number 70. Should have been a sign right there to MAKE SURE the ref knows you're reporting and not 70. Made it even more clear when they announced 70 over the PA, and it should have been abundantly clear when Dallas covered 70 but not 68. The ref screwed up, but so did the Lions. 3 different signs that the ref gave the wrong number and the ignored it. Did they not hear the announcement over the PA? If that's the case, I take all blame away from the ref. Much easier to hear something over a PA than a player trying to yell over crowd noise.

No kidding. There’s no way it wasn’t intentional. The official gave a head nod when 70 wasn’t even near him which means he heard 68. Allen should be fired. What a POS.
@nw4042 your dumb!! Really, the ref calls tripping when he should of called holding. Give me a break.. amd if the fix was on for the Cowboys, why call any penalty. Your comment is more far fetched then many I've read. Lol
Number 70 is halfway across the field while 68 is reporting. 70 never reported. This is 1000% the refs fault. What is Decker supposed to do? Chase down the ref and confirm the head nod that he got after he said “Hey I’m reporting”. Give me a break
Lmao I know , 70 was way behind lol
Both 68 and 70 made the reporting motion at about the same time. The ref seems to only have seen the one that was further.

But since #70 was announced to the Cowboys and over the PA, the Cowboys covered #70, not #68. #1 Lions coaching staff should of caught the mistake #2 #68 would of been covered if he was announced. #3 The mistake tripping call on the cowboys was disgusting. It is one thing to get a call against you vs a no call, its entirely another to penalize the wrong team for a penalty that was made by the other team. If a no call or a call against the defense, the game was over. Coaching for both teams down the stretch was horrible, the outcome matched it.
Cowherd said the same thing as did many others
Rex is the my favorite analyst on the show, but ESPN will definitely fine him for telling the truth. At this point I’m considering not even watching the nfl, because nothing is going to change
@Dolomite4518 he is not telling the truth. He is smacking his lips bla bla, like when he was coaching. The Lions coach admitted to hearing #70 beong announced and didn't stop the play to question. Cowboys didn't even cover #68. He was basically a blocker. And many say, he wouldn't of been a legal receiver because he was not lined up on the end of the line. It's all a mess. What is completely dumb, is how people thing it was rigged for the Cowboys. If so, why was the mistake tripping penalty given to the Cowboys. Game over if the correct call or no call happened. It's all a joke. Lions got tricky, and of the ref said the wrong number or not, Lions didn't stop it..
@@crungefactory That's because Cowherd and many others (Nick Wright, SAS) are just as stupid and full of $hit as Rex Ryan!
Because the hate the Cowboys so much. Its all fair if the Cowboys would have lost. They wouldn't talk this much about the tripping penalty. Nobody talks about how much Micah Parsons get held. But soon as we win, its all this subjectivity bs. 🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️

#70 had already caught a pass that game tho. Im pretty sure the reason he was covered was because he was lined up as a LT which ultimately led to the illegal formation call after the ineligible call.

As a Saints fan this happened for a trip to the Super Bowl. The NFL does not care one bit. They probably care more about the interest in the call than than getting it correct.

If the Lions won after that BS tripping call, no one would be crying for the Cowboys like this
And this is why penalties need to be able to be reviewed.
I know the 1 year PI could be challenged was a bust, but that was because refs just covered their own butts & stuck with any call they made. But within the final 2 minutes of any half, coaches should be able to request reviews of penalties in some way or another.
Yep, if penalties could be challenged/reviewed, the bunk tripping call against Hendershot on the previous drive would've been reversed to correctly penalize Hutchinson & the Lions wouldn't have been in this situation to begin with.
I agree, but you can’t challenge this penalty because the cowboys are told who reports in near the snap. If they’re told the wrong player, then they guard the wrong player.
The best result possible for the Łions, after the play was completed, was a do-over. i.e. not being pushed back.

What an ignorant comment to write. They have no idea who is illegible and who isn't. Thanks Rex for telling it like it is. As a lions fan we’ve been screwed a few times by refs over the yrs.
After the Wildcard playoffs. Question: who’s laughing now?
Answer: Detroit Lions
They needed to find some excuse to make the Lions lose. They know what they did and it’s not going to change. Especially now with online gambling and fantasy football there’s so much money being involved.
That ref knew exactly what he was doing
Exactly miss the tripping call on Hutchinson call it on Dallas so the Lions can get the ball back in time score a TD anticipate the Lions r going to go for 2 throw it to a lineman so they can call him ineligible to screw them over... Read that out loud to see if that makes sense to u.

@@terrellcowell6361 Thank you the only sane person in these comments.
Rex Ryan broke the 4th wall with the trick play communication between coach and refs before the games. I didn't know that.
Unbelievable Sam acting shocked that the lions were trying to confuse the Cowboys by not letting them know who is eligible until the ref says it. That's kinda the game of football. not letting your opponents know your next move. You send 1 guy to report, the defense knows for another 10 seconds or so who is eligible and can adjust and communicate. You send 3 and the defense then has to wait to hear what number from the ref over the speakers and then has less time to adjust. She just sounded so appalled to think that one team might try and trick the other team xD
The ref literally had to look around 68 to even see 70
But since #70 was announced to the Cowboys and over the PA, the Cowboys covered #70, not #68. #1 Lions coaching staff should of caught the mistake #2 #68 would of been covered if he was announced. #3 The mistake tripping call on the cowboys was disgusting.
