A major flaw with his stance from a theistic standpoint is, he's basically saying he's only good to avoid going to Hell. Most theists wouid say that's not how that works. If his mythology of choice is real, he's still going to Hell because he doesn't have real faith/belief. EDIT TO ADD: Right after I left this comment, in the video Matt basically made the same point as me lol Guess I should've kept watching before commenting.
That, kids, is what a fully religious education does. The moment you doubt the lies they tell you, you become a danger to society. Never base kids education on religion.
Yeah... if you only act responsibly because you think God's watching with his finger on the "Hell" button, you're not good - you're just covering your ass.
This has always been one of the unsettling parts of religous followers for me. I have believed in God since I was a kid, but I've been an exceptionally well behaved person. I didn't act out as a kid, I've never been arrested or even ticketed. I go out of my way to help people and avoid hurting others. I don't even kill insects. I act this way because I have empathy for other living things and understand the benefits of living in society. I don't want to break rules in society, especially those that could potentially hurt others. My motivation for doing "good" and "the right thing" is my knowledge that failing to do so can result in someone feeling bad or being treated unfairly. If I do the right thing, I can protect someone, make them happy, or avoid something unfair. In addition to society's rules, I also have my own moral code about how to treat others and myself in a just way. I abhor suffering and act to reduce suffering as much as I reasonably can with the resources I have. When I encounter religious people that seem to lack empathy, lack internal morals, and do not abhor suffering it is chilling. The only reason they have for doing right isn't their desire to do right and their respect for others, but because they are afraid? Horrible! The worst is when these people can't conceptualize secular morality because they can't understand why someone would act just "without eternal consequences." Because I feel respect and compassion by default? I didn't have to be told I needed to love people by an authority; that is my nature. So it's like there's a void where there should be prosocial feelings in these kinds of people.
If you believe that you can be absolved and forgiven for whatever you choose to do, there is no true morality in your belief system. This is the failure of religious morality.
Josef we all do some stupid shit as human beings. Learn to accept that you made bad choices in the past and take responsibility for that and learn to forgive yourself for that. Try to move on and focus on being a better human being now. Don't let the past destroy you. If you are a better human being now then that's great man. Love yourself and forgive yourself. You don't need to fear anything. Let go of that fear. Peace to you from a fellow atheist.
Does anyone else get random clips with shitty audio that keeps repeating words or segments of the caller throughout the rest of the call? I heard Josef say 'myself' approximately 42 times.
This is probably why ancient religious leader started making up moral rules to begin with. They couldn’t get people to stop doing things that they didn’t want, so they argued that it was a god that didn’t want it. Somehow this is persuasive to people.
If this guy didn't care about his actions he wouldn't be clinging to a belief system for the purpose of getting himself to change his actions. What a mental gymnast
I'm listening to this on my TV, while I'm washing dishes in the kitchen while being way too high, and the "Mike Belt", or whatever he was saying, was freaking me the f*ck out for a minute there. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
God is an excuse for having no personal responsibility, when you say sorry to god, but not the person who was wronged, it teaches someone to believe they are morally superior to others while being completely ignorant to fellow humans.
Why didn't Josef fear the actual 'hell' on earth of being sent to prison? He said he changed because he's afraid of the 'real' hell. Isn't hell essentially just an eternal prison?
Don’t think it reasonable to give addicts the choice of only 12 step program or jail, which appears to be the case in my state. Isn’t the first step “acknowledging” a “higher power”? These programs r religious. And the success rate is actually not that good

I was in AA for quite a long time, and can tell you that it is totally a religion. The entire chapter "We Agnostics" is just an attempt to strawman all atheists and to goad you into believing in God. They claim you can have any "higher power" that you want, but once you go through all the literature, it becomes blatantly obvious that "God" is a tyrannical being that tortures you with drunkeness and death until you obey "HIS WILL" in their own literature. The book Twelve and Twelve, describes "Atheists as savages that refuse to accept God" Several state supreme courts have ruled AA to be a religion.
When in India once, I, and the 2 other Americans with me for work, visited St. Thomas Cathedral Basilica. My 2 colleagues call themselves Christian. I am atheist. When we went into the tomb where St. Thomas is purportedly entombed, we were asked to not take photos inside the tomb. Care to guess who the ONLY person in our party to respect and honor the wishes of the nun who "kept the gate"? Here's a hint: it was me. The Atheist. I was the only one with enough respect to honor the simple request of no photography. And I am an avid photographer. That, in a nutshell, is a perfect example of believers. Rules are for everyone else. But not for them.

He's still a bad person, he's only doing good things because he fears punishment. I don't want to do bad/selfish things, but do good things just because they're good. I don't believe in that God or hell crap...
There’s something I’ve realized about this topic. Christianity kinda sets people up for failure. Instead of teaching people actual good values and to be good for the sake of being good, the benefits of helping people, empathy, mutual benefit, pain caused by hurting others, etc. Some Christians just teach “do this cuz God.” So when someone loses their faith, for whatever reason, and they weren’t raised with a sufficient moral grounding in the first place, then they may feel lost and do bad things because they’re still thinking in the Christian worldview of “do this and that, CUZ god, and if not god then I can do whatever.” No lol that’s not how it works. They were set up for failure. They weren’t taught well enough to be a good person in general, and are actually still stuck in that mindset. There are so, SO MANY reasons why faith is so fucking disgustingly, evilly, deceptively bad and wrong. Add this shit to the list. Though ofc I know I’m not the first person to ever think of that, but it just occurred to me. It’s just about control, one of religion’s many primary facets and reason for origin. To control people. To take the easy way to make people conform, good or bad (don’t murder but also slavery is fine). At the end of the day, Jim is right. Neither theism nor atheism causes him to do anything, he made his own choices. Maybe he’s just a sociopath either way. In any case, Christianity did NOT help in terms of teaching him that good foundation of thought, reason, and morality from his childhood. Ehh so maybe Christianity did have a bigger role but of course at the end of the day he is still the arbiter of his own actions.
There are good people and bad people. Good people do good things, bad people do bad things. For good people to do bad things requires religion. (Steven Weinberg)

Great quote True Detective ""If the only thing keeping a person decent is the expectation of divine reward then, brother, that person is a piece of s***"
They were always "Christian" just not serious about their religion, and in their born again moment that couldn't equate their behavior before to being Christian, so they must have been athiest.
OK, this is the kind of person theism was created for. If you have no internal sense of morality, you have to be convinced that there is an external force keeping you in line.
one doesn't have to believe in something to choose to be a good person. you are who you make yourself. having a motivation... just the right excuse... it can help you get there. but the work put in getting there? to changing? that's all you. thank you to all the ones that put in the effort to change and maybe make the world a little better, religious or not.
This is the difference between the 2 mothers who teach good behaviour to their children: one says be good or you father will whip your ass, don’t bully your school mates because you might get suspended, don’t steal because you’ll end up in jail, don’t rape because you might have to merry her or be in jail. The other says, be good because that’s the right way to behave vs. your siblings and parents, don’t bully your mates because they are children like you and deserve respect and empathy, don’t steal, rape kill because that causes harm to others people like you, be respectful and helpful because it’s good for all and gain you respect.
Christianity is " I Want To Live FOREVER" and all of the (crimes or sins) that I committed I don't have to plead guilty for those things because someone else took the blame for me.....Christianity is for the irresponsible unwilling to own up to their own actions.
Every Christian has an anacdote about the time they lost faith and their life magically turned to crap and they started treating other people terribly. Its because being personally saved gets you more clout then never straying in Christian circles and bringing up that their life is magically better with faith is easier then having an actual reason.
He fears his mortality. He's old now and wants to excuse all his misdeeds. I wish people would just be honest. He lived life as an F boy and don't want to be blamed for it
I learned in my life many things from religious texts etc, not because they are available there only or it is their exclusive ownership. But because I hear it first time or I recall that as a source. It is like a parent teaching a children for varuous tricks and reasons to do something, or not to do something. But that is nothing else than learning the logic and learning the moral in your life from all kind sources, and fallacy is to assign that to some imagery being, it is like your father teaching you not to put your finger on hot oven.... And when you learn that, you credit your unicorn friend for that lesson....

How does earth exist hu? Huh? Huh?" And i used to just say well prove that he exists and ill be convinced they just get all asshurt and damn me to hell and im just sat there like "no longer in america do people respect others beliefs, they have to sit there and ridicule you into their beliefs" thats why i look down on them, they legit behave like a cult and get upset when i call them on it....
I never believed in gods even as a child. At eight, I told my mother I don't feel this god you always talk about. She slapped me. I guess she thought that would teach me. It did. It taught me not to be honest with her. People who believe that Jesus is their savior should be able to run wild because they believe they are forgiven. Everyone sins, and Jesus is your get out of jail (hell) card. They should even want to die sooner so they can get to heaven sooner. I think being a good human is worth something. And since this is the only life I can be sure of, I don't want to end it early.

Which is the same basic problem with Pascal's Wager.

‘Myself. . . Myself’

"Myself, myself...." Most perfect loop ever 😂
Another example of someone who can't see that being moral is not the same as being conditioned.
If you believe that you can be absolved and forgiven for whatever you choose to do, there is no true morality in your belief system. This is the failure of religious morality.
That's what makes it so attractive to people. "What's that? I can do as many shitty things as I want and STILL be forgiven? Sign me up!"
Is God trying to tell me to look at "myself"?
Jim Barrows! Good to see him on The Line. Oh, I've seen this one, good call.
Lol that “myself” crap reminds me of the Howard Stern show “Bababooey!! Bababooey!!”
I'm dying at "my self" increasing in frequency. wtf was that
JIMMY SNOW'S F***ING WITH! WE'RE ALL GOING TO DIE!

God is an excuse for having no personal responsibility, when you say sorry to god, but not the person who was wronged, it teaches someone to believe they are morally superior to others while being completely ignorant to fellow humans.

When a Theist becomes an Atheist, people ask, why did you lose your faith? When an Atheist becomes a Theist, I ask, why did you lose your reason?
the caller never had to deal with the concept of Santa Clause as a child.
Why didn't Josef fear the actual 'hell' on earth of being sent to prison? He said he changed because he's afraid of the 'real' hell. Isn't hell essentially just an eternal prison?
What the hell was the "Myself, Mike Phelps, My belt, Mystealth" junk that kept going off? I thought somebody hijacked the show!
Getting sober is great but I highly question AA in general. It's way too relgious.
Don’t think it reasonable to give addicts the choice of only 12 step program or jail, which appears to be the case in my state. Isn’t the first step “acknowledging” a “higher power”? These programs r religious. And the success rate is actually not that good
@@dwightfitch3120 yeah I am not sure at all. AA doesn't make any sense. Especially in the context where you go to it or go to jail. Although I don't think I would be opposed to a sentence of therapy or treatment. It's the AA part that is super weird.
The book Twelve and Twelve, describes "Atheists as savages that refuse to accept God"
Several state supreme courts have ruled AA to be a religion.
It is literally a violation of the US constitution because it is ABSOLUTELY a religious organization
Even when I was a Christian I never understood the popularity of wanting to feel broken and useless without god.
This type of caller is common - they keep themselves in Their belief by just talking talking talking so nothing else can get in. That way they don't have to hear what other people say, since that might make them realize.
Tried to have fun as much as i could he says. When being destructive to others and yourself is your way of fun then You're not a good person to begin with and are not one in the end. If you don't even have the sympathy and empathy and you're only held back by the fear of eternal pain, then you are a psycho/sociopath. And if a psychiatrist etcetera can't help you then you're a verry dangerous one.
Wich by the sound of him saying that the programs to learn to be a better person didn't help him, he is.
If the *only* thing keeping you from hurting others is fear of retribution, you are *not* a good person, you are a bad person on a leash.
He's still a bad person, he's only doing good things because he fears punishment.
I don't want to do bad/selfish things, but do good things just because they're good.
I don't believe in that God or hell crap...
WTF is that voice "myself"!
18:00 "prove you're not a liar" such a banger producer tag fr😭😭
Maaaaaaybe Joseph’s plight has less to do with metaphysics or a consequence paradigm, and more a result of poor IMPULSE CONTROL. Which is treatable.
There’s something I’ve realized about this topic.
Christianity kinda sets people up for failure. Instead of teaching people actual good values and to be good for the sake of being good, the benefits of helping people, empathy, mutual benefit, pain caused by hurting others, etc.
Some Christians just teach “do this cuz God.”
So when someone loses their faith, for whatever reason, and they weren’t raised with a sufficient moral grounding in the first place, then they may feel lost and do bad things because they’re still thinking in the Christian worldview of “do this and that, CUZ god, and if not god then I can do whatever.”
No lol that’s not how it works.
Caller is lying, he's using that tired old "Since Atheists don't get their morals from God, then they have no morals" it's pretty sad. He's just using a BS story about "I was an atheist and constantly took drugs, constantly committed crimes, and constantly did bad things, BECAUSE I WAS AN ATHEIST"
Since you didn't get your bananas from Costco, you don't have any bananas.
AI bot is just roasting Josef.
Great quote True Detective ""If the only thing keeping a person decent is the expectation of divine reward then, brother, that person is a piece of s***"
This "I used to be an atheist" BS is getting quite old.
They were always "Christian" just not serious about their religion, and in their born again moment that couldn't equate their behavior before to being Christian, so they must have been athiest.
Agreed!👌💯

Cognitive dissonance calls are the best. The Landon call as well.
OK, this is the kind of person theism was created for. If you have no internal sense of morality, you have to be convinced that there is an external force keeping you in line.
Why are there so many theists who just can't understand hypotheticals?
That's a concerning recurrence. Not sure if they're playing dumb or if they're actually that dumb.
Because they can't think critically, otherwise they'd start seeing through the bs of the religion they believe
one doesn't have to believe in something to choose to be a good person. you are who you make yourself. having a motivation... just the right excuse... it can help you get there. but the work put in getting there? to changing? that's all you. thank you to all the ones that put in the effort to change and maybe make the world a little better, religious or not.
Scary people, the kind that need god to keep them in line.
I doubt that the caller was ever an atheist. He was simply a non-practicing Christian and confused that state of mind with atheism.
Doing this call-in show seems like such a joyless activity for you two
Trying to figure out at 74 what most of us had down by 7.

A proud member of the Church of Hedging your Bets.

I'm sorry but I'm tired of people using their accidents, cancers, and etc. to prove God. It is just totally see through. It's also passive aggressive. Im tired of people playing Walter Mitty to be a special unicorn.
Josef sounds like he is Narcissist and only stopped being horrible to people when he got old enough to see enough of the consequences. Sounds like people set him straight, not God lol
Got too old to be violent anymore...You can't talk shit when you can't stand up without help...
I just dont even interact with theists anymore, every single damn time they ask of my religious beliefs and i simply say i remain unconvinced that one does exist they ALWAYS jump straight into "oh yea how are you alive?
