As a long, long time 990 rider, who loves my girl off-road, I've been eyeing the 1290 R since it launched. Once you are hooked on that LC8, and the way the big KTMs play in the dirt, it is hard to go somewhere else. While I don't love all the computers on the latest KTMs and agree that the headlight is shite, it is what it is. Thanks for your measured review and perspectives.
My story exactly. I have a 990 Adv S and with a few years lifespan to go, the newer 1290 R does appeal to me for road trips (mostly offroad) with my wife. I used to do more gnarly adventure bike festivals & skills challenges but at 60 now (still in good physical shape), I now do more risqué stuff with my 690 or, go play in the hills with my 300 to scratch the technical itch. This is to preserve my collectors item. The 890 is a nice bike, but at 6'4" it's too cramped and the 1290R is the only KTM option out there that's roomy enough for my wife and I. So, while my 990 still soldiers on, the 1290R remains in the back of my mind.

I agree, the 990 stays king, but 1 thing is true, if it has 2 wheels we just can't stop riding them...safe travels bud.Frank
