A red-tailed hawk caught what looks like a large gopher snake at the local RC field.The snake puts up a struggle, but resistance is futile. The hawk is going to have a nice breakfast.

I just watched this play out up near the treeline...big hawk and a snake...got out the binoculars and watched from about 75 yards...that hawk knew I was watching.I walked out onto the deck and he turned to look at me...what senses they have.

Snakes are an important middle link in the food chain, they help keep small pest populations under control, and then feed medium sized mammals and birds of prey when their time comes.

You shouldnt be. There one of the few predators that youre more of a threat to them than they are to you. That being said Red Tails are territorial and you shouldn't get to close to a wild one. But even if that did happen the worst youd get are some scars and cuts on your upper body. It cant kill you, in fact with a stiff backhand you can really mess up a bird. Thats why they are so protected in the United States. ....that and DDT. 😢

Awesome Nancy. I love birds of prey. We have a Pair of Great Horned Owls that have nested in our backyard for the past two years. I’ve found Squirrel and bunny body parts but no snakes yet. Watching them catching a snake would be cool.
Nope! There's only one species of snake that spits , and it's the spitting-cobra. That spit has pin-point accuracy. There's no creature's eyes that doesn't get irritated from its venom. This hawk wouldn't have killed a spitting cobra. That's a footage that I wanna see. I've already seen footage of an eagle losing to a black mamba.

We have some BIG red tails here in ohio...just watched one take out a sneaky snake just like this video and then he flew off too...he heard me from 75 yards at least...what great senses they have. I even saw a big red take out two falcons once...they thought that they hadt he upper hand and boy oh boy he showed them a thing or two...was like national geographic when he grabbed them one at a time and gave them the beak then perched himself and looked at them with his headdress sticking straight up...they flew off in the opposite direction after they had composed themselves from the whoopin haha. Awhile back i read a page on an Oudoor News Magazine here in South Texas where a patrolling Game Warden noticed a Hawk swooped down on some brushland and saw all the russlting and got off to go check, to his surprise he saw a (black Indigo) wrapped around the predator nearly choking the Hawk to death!,..Happy ending was a saved Hawk as Officer pulled the fight apart!, Regards from South Texas!
A few months ago a Red-shouldered hawk i watch dove out of a tree and snatched a 2.5-3 foot snake out of the edge of a crick and flew right over me with it!
the hawks are likely a mating pair...the one killing the snake is the male and the female has come to find out what is taking so long to take the meal back to the chicks in the nest....the male had to make sure the snake was dead because the snake could have 1) bitten the hawk in the air, or 2) bitten one of the chicks back at the nest...that hawk knew exactly what he was doing even though his girlfriend was a bit impatient...these animals are a lot like humans....the guy is doing all the work while the woman sits and bitches
I hate to burst your bubble, but like most Hawks and Eagles, the female red-tailed is up to 25% larger than the male. So the hawk wrestling the snake is female and her mate came to see what's going on and offer encouragement ;P

A bop on the head is unlikely to kill outright especially if the prey is fighting for survival. It is nature and it can be brutal but the attacker does so for food not for fun as far as I know.

Their great eyesight and small body size gives them great reaction time. It's weird how it works but typically they don't get bit. They also do a matador technique in which they try to get the snake to aim at the feathers and strike the snakes head when they pull the wing away. Tragically though there have been multiple scenarios in which a snake or cat has killed the hawk instead of vice versa.
Red Tails have scales on their legs and the snake's fangs cannot penetrate that armor. Hence they can take out rattlesnakes. That is an interesting process.
