I discovered your show last fall and binged hours and hours of old episodes, I bought the cookbook (and several books from some of your guests I've begun to follow) and began quoting you or sharing facts I learned from your show with everyone. As you probably already know, not everyone wants to hear it. But when you know better you do better, and I know I'm making better choices and encouraging my adult children and grands to do it too. Thank You!!
I was immediately attracted to your book "Eat Smarter" in the very first chapter because of how you describe your upbringing, food=love. What continues to be shocking and is a key difference - these food deserts are in wealthy areas that can more than afford a $3 avocado. Even though I was fortunate to grow up in a household that has the finances to be able to afford the best food, there is a plague that surrounds me when I visit home as an adult. There is a lack of access to grocery stores that even carry brands and selections that are commonly found where I live now. As I tirelessly drive to the "better" grocery stores in the place I grew up, it's no surprise why people here have the mindset that eating healthy is not normal because "you must just have better genes." It's not just in my household, but the general consensus. I now live in an area where my mindset for health and wellness is shared by so many that it's just common practice and encouraged by government. I'm not sure I would've ever discovered your wealth of knowledge if I would've stayed in the area I grew up. I agree that it feels overwhelming when I travel home and have a conversation like this when normalcy is seen in ultra processed food everywhere here, even in a wealthy area. Sending much love and thanks!
The points that you made in the last 3 mins of the episode is sooooo important ! Really loved listening today. I send my husband so many of your videos. Sometimes I just have him listen to a few minutes in case he is not interested but it truly is paying off. I have seen such a big shift in his perspective around ultra processed food. He is listening to his body more and can point out what is the cause behind some of his GI symptoms. Not only that but he’s come to realize that we needed to make adjustments to our 5 year olds diet as well. We didn’t introduce her to a variety of food early enough so she became a picky eater who mostly ate only ultra processed food. Her symptoms became so severe in November of last year that we had to go to the ER then later referred to a GI specialist . We still don’t have a true diagnosis after 2 different procedures and a lot of money so my main goal is to have her eat less processed as possible because I truly believe that the oils and possibly milk is what’s giving her a hard time. She’s also at an age where she is now more open to trying new food because those GI symptoms are things that she doesn’t want to keep experiencing over and over again. Right now, her favorite meals include rotisserie chicken and steamed broccoli .
Thank you for sharing your voice and experience! If I can recommend something, please Google search a functional MD or Integrative MD in your city for your daughter. Also, amazing physicians like Dr. Will Cole can get lab testing and work with you all remotely. The best days are still to come! :)
Our thoughts affect how food interacts with our bodies is my biggest takeaway. That is wild. I did not know that. The milkshake thing you shared is just very fascinating. I have your cook book and have listened to several of your podcasts so I was familiar with alot of what you spoke of here, but that one about your thoughts and when you said eat bad food when you’re feeling good was all new to me! Glad to know that now!!
@theshawnmodel - your podcast episodes NEVER disappoint and this particular episode continues in that same vein!! Amazing content with practical and easy to implement strategies on how we can not only prolong our life span but also (and more importantly) increase our health span through reducing the consumption of ultra-processed foods! Thanks brother!
The dangers of ultra processed food should be a part of education in our school system. It is not right that so much money is being taken out of our taxes, yet we are at at the bottom in health.
"Food is information": one of my favorite quotes from Shawn that I've heard over the years. It's incredible how many "experts" focus upon calories in different foods, rather than the constituent nutrients. Ultra-processed foods are a whole lot of the former, and not much of the latter. As a nation, once we start gravitating towards real food and all of the vital nutrients they contain, we'll start seeing real gains in health. Thank you Shawn for all of your dedication to helping others! As always, you are the gold standard source of health-related science and information.
I loved your point of trying to make changes at the micro culture (family) level. The old saying of "You are what you eat" really hits home after hearing this podcast. I am motivated to check out your book now.
This was such a great interview! You always share so much information. The fact that 60% of the American diet now is ultra processed food is wild to me! Especially since what you said earlier how what we eat actually changes and makes up our cells
Well this will be more like a story book and not a comment. LOL I absolutely love your show especially all the funny little quirks that make me laugh throughout my day! My biggest takeaway today where the lightbulb went off for me was the epi caloric controllers - The hypothalamic inflammation which leads to belly fat and insulin resistance. The connection the brain has absorbing our caloric intake. For the past 7 years I've struggled back and forth with weight and hormonal fluctuation. Severe emotional trauma had depleted my relationship with food. I went on a program which helped and then more trauma returned. Since then I'm starting back a healthy cycle with food. I was nutrient deprived which in turn resulted in hormonal issues. This was so important to hear. Goes back to the mind - gut connection. Thank you so much for sharing your wisdom, laughs and knowledge in a way that is truly relatable! You by far are one a superhero to me! Such an inspiration in your family life as well!
Thank you for the work you are doing in sharing this information. So many valuable research-based insights about how food fuels our bodies, why a healthy diet is so important and how to achieve this! Can’t wait to read your book and gift it this Christmas to my family and friends! I’ve been waiting for a book like this! Thank you!!
Yes that is all we know is the cheap “food” it’s the culture we grow up in! We have to practice eating healthy and changing the and our kids eat. Thank you Shawn for all your knowledge!
Shawn, thank you for the tips for getting off processed foods: Scary choice, sufficient choice, and smarter choice. I so appreciate you talking to all audiences and different stages of our health journey! Can't wait to get my own copy of the Eat Smarter Cookbook! Cravings are cultural is so true!
@shawnstephenson is straight fire! Thanks for speaking to each person regardless of where we are in our health journey. Decent, better, best and cravings are a culture issue is so true! 🔥
One of my first books about eating differently was your Eat Smarter book and your podcasts always seem to reinforce and support other information I am finding regarding health and nutrition. It seems so natural now to associate processed foods as being unhealthy, but for some it's hard to understand when that is the way so many have eaten for so long. I am enjoying food more as I get back to a farm to table way of eating.
Great episode! So happy that, growing up, a book called, You Are What You Eat by Adele Davis, was treated like a second Bible, in our home. Of course, I will have an occasional treat, but stay far away from ultra processed foods.
Thank you for your valuable nutritional and health information you share on your podcast. I appreciate all the research and trust that the information is update peer reviewed and accurate. I always learn something useful and the guest speakers cover a variety of topics. You save me so much research and reading and time. I would love to hear a podcast on surviving the cure from having throat cancer and lots of radiation 20 years ago. On Ultra Processed foods, if it comes in a package or has a barcode it is not real food.
I so enjoy listening to all the amazing information that you research thank you 🙏 and Thomas you always ask the questions in the right way to get the best results thank you guys you're both amazing . Have a beautiful day 💐💐
Such a great overview of the power of food. I'm so excited to try the protein sweet potato pancakes - just ordered the book:) I love that you can freeze them and have them as meal prep. Really excited to see the other recipes as well!
We gotta move from the scary choices toward the smarter choices! I like how you break it down into different levels/categories. 70% of U.P. foods in our diets is deleterious to our health!
Changing the ratio of ultraprocessed foods to no more than 40% and whole foods to at least 60% of diet, understanding economies of scale, genetically modified foods, government subsidies, reading food science journals, regenerating tissues, food and culture, fermented foods, nutrient quality over calorie quantity, etymology of food vocabulary
I started listening to you last year and I have learned a lot in that time. Thank for you explaining your knowledge in simple terms and providing easy to follow solutions keep doing
I always appreciate your food knowledge. The calories in, calorie out model has never worked for me. Thank you; I feel seen ☺️. The Pringles test is fascinating!
It is mind blowing how many people (and I used to too!) believe that eating all this processed food is normal and healthy. Mind blowing that your body doesn't even recognize half of it as "food" and what the heck it's doing to us.
It's both surprising and profoundly disturbing that so many people eat so much ultra-processed food. Education, awareness, and helping out others who need access to good food are all key. Big takeaway: our 'energy' cells are made up of what we eat. We literally are what we eat.
As I am in the health space. I try to stay away from these foods 90% of the time , these foods were created to highjack our brain - you ever tried eating just one OREO? You ever tried eating half a bag of potato chip? It is almost impossible! Im not saying we can never heave these foods but eating them only on occasions would be best instead of of a regular thing in your everyday life. Stay well all.
I live in Omaha Nebraska. When you drive to North Omaha, which is predominantly a black/brown neighborhood, every gas station has porn, liquor and gambling machines in them. You go to West Omaha, which is where a lot of white people live, you will not see that at all. I live in Central Omaha, and drive to both North Omaha, and West Omaha and I am white. Neither side knows what is happening in these different areas of town. Many west O people would never go to North Omaha. I grew up in Nor Cal, where’s there’s a lot more diversity spread out, so I’m not uncomfortable in either area. There’s an agenda playing out in North Omaha. It bothers me immensely that more people don’t see it. Why aren’t those gas stations/ liquor stores in white neighborhoods? Why are they in predominant brown neighborhoods? You could say the same about what foods are available in each area. It’s not because normal folks are racist or trying to control the people through identity narratives. It’s because the controllers of the world, want different things for different people. Where I grew up, 7/11 and the am/pm was my spot to eat all the time. I was a minority white kid in a brown neighborhood. I know better now how to eat. A snickers and Dr Pepper wasn’t a good breakfast. However my childhood habits have been so hard to break. I’m trying to do better with my kids. It seems to be getting harder and harder. Even in the so called high end better nutrition stores like Whole Foods. The majority of foods in those stores are fake food now. Then add the cost to real food versus fake. The fake food is a lot less expensive short term. Sorry for the super long rant. 😬
Thank you for sharing and being part of such an imporant conversation. We hope that discussions like these can inspire more awareness and action towards creating equitable access to healthy food and resources for all communities. 🙏🏾❤️ - Sarah (Assistant to Shawn)
