Part of BYU's recruitment pitch is for their athletes to focus on their craft without distractions. Play ball and not get drama or legal issues along the way.
Enjoyed the show, guys. Appreciate the humor and perspectives. BYU alum here. Couple thoughts below: You might wanna just ask AJ why he's coming to BYU. AJ said this himself: Coach Young and the rest of the BYU staff. They are the reason BYU has gotten an incredibly strong roster this year. And landed AJ for next year. Other schools were gonna pay AJ more than BYU. AJ reports himself that he chose BYU for the staff and other variables. So, this is much more than the NIL bag. It's the total picture. The total personal, professional development, nutrition, etc. Coach Young assembled an NBA-like staff. All these high-level recruits know about the Honor Code. Kevin Young wants kids that are the right fit at BYU. Not everybody wants the Provo life and night life. AJ appears to be OK with this. Same with the other high-level, non-LDS athletes who signed up for BYU sports. FYI: Might wanna get up to date: Mormons drink Red Bull and Coke. And caffeine. You can buy all that soda on campus. But, still no to coffee, alcohol, pre-marital sex.
@mmorris6341 Agree. Most NBAs guys are family men. Strip clubs, binging on alcohol, drugs, don't help you win championships. Further, AJ has supportive parents. Coaching him up on values. They likely persuaded him to avoid the circus and wild lifestyle most Americans experience at university.
BYU Athletics can't make that point enough that the athletics program supports itself. If the Church paid athletes, it would be unfair for every other school out there because the Church could pay every top athlete whatever they wanted. But the Church's sacred funds are put to better use. Perhaps one day sports commentators will understand this.
@@claytongardinier5179I have been a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons) my whole life and this has never been a thing! There has never been a law/rule/ commandment about drinking caffeine.

You got the Brandon Davies story wrong. There weren't allegations. Brandon Davies had sex with his girlfriend, which was against the honor code, agree or disagree, and he reported himself. They didn't have to suspend him, but they did to remain consistent with the rules in the honor code at the time. It was a standard that he agreed to, a standard that he violated, and a standard that he felt bad about violating so he reported himself knowing the consequences. You can't blame the school for that. There have been plenty of students including athletes that have not followed the honor code, not reported themselves, and not faced the consequences. That's how honor codes are supposed to work: on your honor.
On the Honor Code issue, this is a selling point for the moms. And, it is a selling point for the recruits. You want to party? BYU is not the right place. You want to put you head down, work hard on the court and in the classroom? BYU all day. No distractions.
This is absolutely bigger than just the money. Other schools could match or pay more than BYU could. Reports a few months ago were that Kansas State was the highest bidder, but they weren’t even a finalist. AJ himself said that his reasons were that he thinks he can win at BYU, and more importantly the coaching will prepare him for the NBa. It’s an NBA staff in terms of experience. Part of the pitch is literally that KD- Dybantsas favorite player- was able to vouch for Coach Young. That’s a big deal. It’s way more than the money. From what I understand, schools that couldn’t pay enough for eliminated early, but there were a bunch of schools who could pay as much as he wanted.
You damn well that's BS talk, BYU was NEVER a factor before NIL, now agter they suddenly become a factor, they gave him the highest amount FOR SURE!, all the other too programs also offer high level coaching and nba experience, you're talking COMPLETE BS, I can tell that you're a yt racist based off your heavy meat riding of byu
There was more misinformation about BYU in the last few minutes of this video than I’ve heard in the last decade combined. Nobody gets in trouble at BYU for drinking coffee or red bulls. And the chances of a non-Mormon student athlete getting “punished” for drinking beer or having sex is pretty slim. Just sayin’!
While I understand the clicky narrative being driven with the money and the church aspect, feels like a bit of an oversight to not even mention some of the other factors at play here.. while BYU isn't a 'Blue Blood' program, they aren't playing in the WCC anymore (and that's not even mentioning that Gonzaga has had no issues sending out NBA talent). AJ is going to be playing in the Big12 which is arguably the best basketball conference in college basketball. So an NBA talent playing against other NBA prospects, regularly. Kevin Young, not only NBA level coach with same level of supporting staff, the dude coached the same NBA star comp you referenced in KD. Did they also throw the bag at him like several other programs, of course, the bag has to be there to even get a seat at the table. Everything else is what actually gets the kid there. And it's not just him, this years class has 2 NBA prospects, next year's class with AJ has 3 counting him. It's not as outlandish as you guys set it up to be. Once you're there then live your life how you want.

There are several reasons why coffee and black tea are forbidden within the LDS faith and form part of the student code of conduct at BYU. However, caffeine in Red Bull, Coke, Dr. Pepper, etc., has never been an issue and if it was, it was amongst those who chose to interpret things as such.
20:58 AJ is a great Christian kid from what I understand.
