- When you think of legends of rock and roll, Stevie Nicks and Janis Joplin are two names that are certain to make your list. Can you imagine having the opportunity to see both stars share a stage? Sadly, Janis Joplin died in 1970, so the two never had a chance to perform together. However, that doesn’t mean they never met. It wasn’t exactly cordial though.
In their encounter, Joplin yelled at Nicks and her bandmates. Did the Fleetwood Mac singer take this incident personally? This is Stevie Nicks’ real thoughts on being yelled off stage by Janis Joplin.

I'm 72 years old & was in the front row & 20' from Janis Joplin. To hear, see & feel the electric energy from her was magic. I know it sounds trite, but you had to be there.

My parents friend was up at the Monterey Pop Festival and never forgot how unbelievable the energy and change that the music was taking on and how the audience was full of excitement. We lived in the SF Bay Area in the 60s and 70s and Jefferson Airplane played at a club right up the street, they had a devoted following from the beginning. Almost everyone started grabbing mikes and instruments and starting garage bands just to be part of everything! It's so exciting to be in at the start of something huge!
She was amazing and very talented, Janis Joplin was too far ahead of her time.

Due to a troubled childhood, Janis was very much a tortured soul, and my hunch is that substance abuse (including alcoholism) made it worse.
Janis was before my time and my dad told me a story about his buddy offering him a ticket to go see Janis and Big Brother and the Holding Company. This was 1967, dad turned it down because he never heard of them at that time.
Dad still regrets it to this day.....

I was 7 years old then and my thing at the time was the Doors, as they played that song Light my Fire constantly on the radio. That is all we had back then... the RADIO.
When I was a young kid growing up in the 60s, I didn't "get" Joplin at all. All I heard was a lot of screaming. But when I got older and re-watched her in the Monterey Pop Festival and Woodstock films, I came to appreciate the emotion she put into her vocals and her blues/rock singer talent.
Yeah me too. I was 13 when I saw her on TV and I thought “what a bunch of noise”. A year later I was wearing the grooves off of the Pearl album, one of the greatest rock albums of all time.
That is the way I felt about Elvis as a young child. He was a greasy haired guy gyrating on stage. I didn’t understand what all the girls were screaming about until I was much older and could appreciate his voice, looks, and talent. He also was one of a kind.

I grew up in the 70s and Janis' voice always made me irritated after about a 1/2 song.....I'm older now and it's even worse than I gave her credit for. OVERRATED!
My two absolute favorite female vocalists of all time. Both equally iconic. Both changed the music industry forever and can never be replaced or matched. Janis was relentlessly bullied her entire life...to her, the stage was where she was important, where she was loved, where she was beautiful. That was her sacred space. Her drug addiction did not make her weak, and she was too good for this world. Stevie also battled drug addiction and was involved in several abusive relationships. She also faced heavy scrutiny after speaking out so bravely and candidly about her decision to have an abortion. BOTH of these women are integral figures in women’s rights and in music history. I love them both equally and SO much!!! I almost shared a birthday with Janis (hers is today, mine tomorrow) Stevie Nicks shares a birthday with my late mother (May 26).

Stevie broke another ceiling. Living to old age without dying from substance abuse.
I met Nicks in the 70s when she was unconscious from drugs and alcohol. As an EMT, we had to carry her off her private jet.

Addiction support is a lot better than it was in 1965
-I lived in San Francisco, and in 2009 - I kid you not - I was in the Haight/Ashbury area, and I saw a young hippie-chick who looked to be in her mid-twenties, and she looked, almost EXACTLY, like Janis Joplin - her face, her hair (but it was red), her dress - everything - it really tripped me out !!! - you had to see her - the resemblance was shocking. - a little later on, someone introduced me to Janis Joplin's friend/ex-housekeeper, who had lived in the attic of Joplin's Haight St. Victorian in the 60's, and she showed me the "Janis Tree", at Hippie-Hill in Golden Gate Park, that Janis Joplin would climb into and sing to people from the top of - good memories.

She preformed in Minneapolis and I saw her then. Must have been 1969 or 1970. I ended up 30 ft. away from her. She was such a powerhouse. Everyone was up on their feet dancing and people from the balcony came down to first floor. The Fire Marshall cut power to the stage and yelled at everyone to return to their seats or the concert was over. Janice flipped out on the Fire Marshall and in very colorful language told him to restore the power. If anything happened at her concert, she would pick up the bill. Power was restored and the concert continued. Janice REALLY rocked that night. It's one of my favorite memories.
I saw Janis Joplin 4 times in the Bay Area on the night they were recording Cheap Thrills with Big Brother and I counted myself lucky to see her. She was the first rock star/godess I saw at the Filmore West.

My music teacher first took lessons from Jorma Kaukonen way back when. He said Jorma was there teaching acoustic guitar and Jerry Garcia was there teaching banjo. He said Jorma invited all of his students to see the Jefferson Airplane play along with Janice and a lot of the other stars who were just about to explode on the world at a local venue. As he was about 11 or 12 at the time, he thought it was the most horrible thing he had ever seen and heard - all of this loud discordant music and people in crazy dress. He laughed about it and said he would give anything to go back and see it again now. Sometimes, you just don't know what you have.

Stevie Nicks and Janis Joplin both had their own personas on stage. Stevie came at you with the air of mystery as the persona as a mysterious, beautiful witch.
Janis was the classy, brassy soul singer that was pure blow your head off, in your face performer.
Janis, as her alter ego pearl, nobody could touch or hurt her.
The insecurities made her both unreachable, yet incredibly vulnerable. Janis had her own brand of,... Shall we say sexy?
She had an incredible stage presence, as did Stevie.
Hats off to both of these incredible women, their accomplishments speak for themselves.
Could you imagine the offspring of Joplin and Plant? I’m sure Plant would have insisted on a no touch, non in utero deal, but the potential voice of the child? Forget it
I've still got my original Big Brother and the Holding Company Janis Joplin "Cheap Thills" album. She was an amazing singer.
I saw Janis Joplin and Big Brother and the Holding Company in the Summer of 1968. She belted out her best tunes while drinking from a bottle of Southern Comfort Whiskey. I close my eyes and still hear her. What a talent! I was a 20 year old right out of Basic Training at Fort Ord California. The concert was at The Filmore West Auditorium in San Francisco.
Stephen, I hitchhiked from Chicago to the Monterey Peninsula in the 80s and it turned out to be one of my favorite places I've ever been! Ended up back in Chicago but I rather be there! Where did you end up living later?
@@sosad9381 After 14 months in Vietnam I returned to Southern California, graduated with a business degree and spent the next 40 years in sales and marketing mostly with an Illinois based company. I kept my love of the music of that era. I also saw John Prine at a club in Chicago in the early 70’s. So began another 40 year infatuation with John Prine and his music. I saw him in concert a dozen or so times. Still love his music. I also hitch hiked all over the Western states searching for a rock festival. Janice Joplin was amazing. A Comet that graced our stratosphere so very long ago, but never forgotten. God bless. Steve

My mom used to go to Fillmore West and Winterland in the late 60's/early 70's and actually smoked out and drank with Janis after a show one time. Another show she has talked about a lot is The Who performing Tommy live. She used to even go when she was heavily pregnant with me in 70. Bill Graham would always check on her and make her sit down because he was afraid she was going to have me there. LOL
@@megmcguigan3857 Filmore West was a great setting for a concert. There were seats but nobody sat in them. Most gathered around the stage, sitting on the floor, staring up at Janice as she belted out song after song, between swigs from her cherished Southern Comfort. Their album Cheap Thrills came out that summer. I still consider it one of rock and roll’s treasures. God bless your mom for taking such good care of you.

Stevie Nicks, Tina Turner and Carole King - all very deserving of that status. Each of them have very different styles and sounds, yet when your hear their music, you know who it is. They each command a certain feeling that washes over you. That's how I know it's a gift I'm lucky enough to experience!

While I admire Stevie Nicks' talent, and I know she deserves to be in the hall of fame, I am also very disgusted that she was so petty minded as to be the one who demanded that Lindsey Buckingham be kicked out of Fleetwood Mac...especially since he was the one who insisted back when asked to join, that if Fleetwood Mac took him, they Had to take Stevie too.
He was with the band for decades, and then all of a sudden they kick him out like trash just to make Stevie happy. Actually, in thinking about it, I'm kind of disappointed in all of them.
But at the end of the day they made great music. Who cares how it was done lol!

Bands are an extremely dysfunctional family, and no outsider can really understand the reactions and feelings that they have for each other. What to us might seem insane or petty, etc., might be because we weren't in at all the thousands of moments that led to certain decisions. We weren't there when big scenes took place or someone was betrayed, so putting down someones talent or career because they made a personal decision about their partner is getting to involved with something we aren't part of. If we knew all the details, we might feel differently, but don't know. I think it's ok to have opinions about them, but it's also good to realize that the whole story is never told either...

I used to feel exactly the same way, and was never an admirer of her particular voice. It was just her unadulterated howling like a wounded animal without holding back in any way, that made her so iconic. I think she represented to a lot of people, especially younger people, the frustration and grief with the war, government, pollution, lovers....her uninhibited acting out really represented hippie angst!!

Narrator was incorrect. JJ didn't yell at a band to get off because they were on longer than she liked. She yelled at them because they were on longer than their time window. There is a BIG difference.

I was introduced to Janice at her flat near the corner of Haight and Ashbury, as she was drying her frizzy hair in front of the oven..she was doing a show that night…I had no idea at the time who she was…my friend from high school in Redmond, Wa..was her room mate in S.F.
I saw Janis Joplin in Toronto in 1970 at CNE Stadium. Little did I know I'd never see her again...

Janis was an amazing musician. She was also very insecure. Accepting one's achievements in life and passing the torch takes amazing grace. Janis did not do that.

To be fair, troubled souls find day to day life a huge struggle, even if insanely talented. Addiction is an unhealthy attempt to escape emotional pain/grief/trauma/PTSD etc. Whatever her pain was, she's remembered & appreciated.

I dated Stevie in the 1970's and she did her whole act. She was disappointed when I was not enthusiastic,but Janis sang right in front of me at Avalon and there was no comparison. Janis was a power singer like Cocker. They could out sing a choir all by themselves. I like Stevie but for some reason she never became a power singer like Joplin. Hell, I was close to Joplin when she threw his own pop festival in New Orleans. It was another Woodstock and Every body was there. Janis was the very last act and she blew everybody away. I remember her chugging a bottle of Southern Comfort while she was sweating and crying,but all the time belting out the song super strong! Freedom is just another word for nothing left to lose! Boy,did Janis sing it for all of us!

i saw joplin at the Winterland ballroom in San fran in the mid sixties . She was fairly intoxicated and would go around to the back of the amps where she had a pint of what looked like whiskey . The stage was elevated and had a walking area in the back , so one could hang out back there if you wanted a different view of the performance .
When I was 13, I crushed on Stevie. When I grew up, I fell in love with Janis.
This is my era and I live In Monterey. I never had an appreciation for Janis. This music cemented my love and loyalty for Motown.
I love Stevie Nicks, (And a lot of music from the 60’s and 70’s). But while you listen to most music, Janis Joplin is kind of like Billie Holiday in a way… they’re of the small percentage that you don’t just listen to, you can feel it.

As a former Heroin Addict (1994-1999) I can tell you that was Janis needing a Fix. I remember being the meanest SOB in the World coming down & then ready to offer my soul to anyone who was in need high. Lots of Apologies came after quitting. I still see people I screwed over from that time now. Maybe 1 or 2 a year & I apologize & ask for forgiveness.

I grew up listening to Janis Joplin my mom was a big fan she had a voice and unique sound that was so strong so powerful she loved life her way and on her terms and didn’t put up with anyones crap she sang from her heart and put her heart and soul into her music Stevie nicks is a big icon but I can’t listen to her voice she sounds like someone who always has a stuffed up knows it’s like nails on a chalkboard Jami’s Joplins music never gets old and only gets better with time such a shame she died so young

In 1972 I worked as a parking attendant at the Garden State Arts Center Janis Joplin Played There 3 nights I got to meet her when she was rehearsing earlier in the day There was a backup band that played before her There name was Sea Train They never became famous or well known Janis and the guy from Sea Train was sitting on the hill in back of the Arts Center smoking a joint Her concerts for those three days was sold out There was so much traffic She was amazing She mentioned she didn’t want to be on the east coast but she had sold out shows all three nights This was in New Jersey I’ll never forget it

Been a fan of Joplin since the Cheap Thrills album, first I've heard of her having attitude with other musicians like that. Don't really believe it. Never heard of Nicks being like that either.Sounds fabricated to me. Joplin & Nicks were in different circles, musically. Mac played blues in 69/70. Joplin would have loved it.

You're not familiar with her music in any detail, I see. Her voice ran the gamut from tender and soft to volcanic. Listen to Summertime or Ball and Chain. She could be very subtle, believe it or not.

The Show I thought she was ran into Janis was at the Winterland festival, in 1968, not 1970. Because Fritz had broken up by 1970. And it was just Buckingham and Nicks. Because I actually read this account, first, on the sleeve of the Big Brother, live at Winterland festival 1968. Stevie Nicks' story is in the footnotes of that live album, and she describes the encounter as they do here,in this video. I just believe they have the date wrong.
If I were you, I'd take down this post. Most of the information here is incorrect. Stevie was not a member of any music ensembles at all while she attended high school. The Fritz Rabyne Memorial Band was her first music lab in, Fall of 1967, a year after she had graduated from Menlo-Atherton. Fritz only played one time on the same stage with Ms Joplin, Big Brother, and the Holding Company, and that was Feb 9, 1968. That Joplin is alleged to have yelled at Nicks and her bandmates? That never happened. I really doubt Stevie was even backstage when I was back there. Janis even offered me a swig of her Southern Comfort. It was just the guys who went to meet the stars in their Green Room. There were no animosities that night. What Stevie alleged in that entire interview was out of her imagination only. This year, I'm publishing a book about the founding of Fritz. Over the years, there have been way too many poorly-researched, uncorroborated, incorrect, and bad stories told about Fritz that have compelled me to set the record straight.
Makes me think of the day when the MC-5 told Janis to Kick Out The Jams or get off the stage at the Grande Ballroom in Detroit
I never could stand Joplin's voice. I appreciate that many people like her, but her voice is definitely an acquired taste....
Stevie and Janis are - and were - very different in their style and talents. And to further complicate things audiences all have their individual preferences. So comparing the two and deciding who's the "better" one is impossible. I think Stevie's gorgeous. I wish I had half her beauty, talent and style. And from the short time Janis was around I think she was a fabulous singer who could have been a super star if she hadn't passed away so young. What a sad loss.

Bogus, Hendrix NEVER toured with Joplin. They were at a couple of major festivals together, but Hendrix never toured with Joplin.

Madonna has said that Stevie Nicks was a big influence on her musical development as Fleetwood Mac was the biggest band at the time and Madonna was in high school

Of course there are many other women in the R&R HOF, but Stevie was the first WOMAN to be inducted TWICE. Once as a MEMBER of an inducted band
