@@catherineholmes2254 Birds snack on the fruits and deposit seeds in other areas away from the plant. That's how, in some areas, barberry shows up in forests and hedgerows where it overtakes native plants.
@batlady2343 thankfully most commercially available barberries and butterfly bushes for sale now are sterile and therefore non-invasive. But people should be very careful!

All good except for daylily. Not on a small property. A cluster of daylily tends to look straggly and unkempt like a bad hair day. I think the public face of a home should be a little formal or at the least, neat and tidy. People can Indulge their whims and eccentricities in the more private family areas.

Barberry is highly invasive and prime tick habitat. Butterfly bush is also invasive in some zones.

I did not know that about barberry. We have a few and just trim them back each fall.

I guess that depends on region. My crimson pygmy barberry in 6a Northwest Indiana have always been restrained and tidy. My dogs have never had ticks.

These are mostly nonnative plants, many are invasives.
