    In this video about Coco-plums. A fruit that grows in warm areas it can range from white to blue to nearly black. The entire fruit is edible. The seeds taste like granola.

    The seeds are definitely the star of the show. I find the most tasty way to enjoy them is to pop the entire thing in your mouth, chew through the seed so the flavor permeats the entire mouthful. Very good eating. Chew till fruit and nut are gone then spit out the remaining shell. Sounds gross but tastes great!

      Jb429421 me too:) but I'm searching for easier ways to remove the flesh so that I can make jams and puddings. I tried cooking them down but it was a big mess. The flesh still did not come off the seed easily. It looks like I may just have to go into a state of meditation in order to get through the hours of removing flesh from the seeds to make enough for pudding, LOL. I'm so happy to find out that the seed is edible! I'm native born and there is so much I don't know about what can be utilized for food and medicine right here in my own county. I began my journey yesterday collecting delicious pennywort! All my life I thought it was a useless weed:(

    Deane, along the Gasparilla road on Gasparilla island (gulf coast, near Englewood) there is a cocoplum with huge white fruit that is 2-3x what I usually find - this particularly large fruit is even drier and more fluffy than the usual cocoplum. It also fruits prolifically. There's also free beer in the bushes on south beach (in the state park) many Sundays! Not kidding

    Great Video Dean! We couldn't figure out what kind of plant this was until yesterday when we asked a native neighbor what it was called and he said Caco. Then I did some googling and sure enough I found it! I thought it was related to the plum because if the shape. My kids love it and I learned something new about being able to eat the kernel! Thanks for a wonderful demonstration!

      @@paradisefruitgarden-of-ede1444 Hi! We have two varieties, the large plum shaped red ones and the small grape shaped dark blue ones. They are mildly sweet and have the texture of like...hmmm a rambutan, but not as wet and slimy and more fluffy?? That's the best I can compare it. Or even like an ice cream bean...if you've had one of those? The inside has a small nut inside a casing and it's reminiscent of almond. My youngest son just pops the little dark blue ones in his mouth and chews it up and eats the whole thing. My daughters chew off the flesh and toss the nut or sometimes crack it open and eat it out of the casing. A neighbor said they boil them down into a sort of jam, pectin base for jam? I recently ate a few and they are quite good. Very mild flavor.

      @@Dashaina Thank you very much! Very descriptive and helpful So far I heard the seed taste like Walnut to Almond. Interesting. I would be interested in get some of the seeds one of these days and planting some to see . I'll ask Mr. EatTheWeed aka Prof Deane, if grafting is a possibility?     Where to grow from seeds do you need to crack the seed casing and germinate before planting.

      Not necessarily, however if you want it to germinate quickly you can crack.it.

    OK Dean, I forgot to menton when i freeze my cocoplums it does improve the flavor of the fruit but it dries out the kernel and makes it more mealy and less tasty so it is a tradeoff,

    hey Green Deane, I was getting ready to make a cocoplum video but after seeing yours don't think I will as it would not be better than yours. here in Broward we have miles of cocoplum as hedges, I don't think there is a Publix store that does not use them.
    I prefer to freeze the fruit whole as it intensifies the mild flavor and makes a nice snack. I will be roasting the seeds this year to see if that helps them . I never made jelly yet but may try by adding other fruit. Thanks for sharing.

      Robb's Homemade Life just wondering how you get the fruit off. I'm looking for shortcuts as it takes me so long to get enough to make jams and putting's. Major arthritis issues too so I thought it would be easy to boil them down but nope… I just ended up with a bunch of black water and all the flesh still on the seeds, LOL. Big mess! They're so yummy and we have a bunch in our backyard but my family isn't as patient as I am to chew on the flesh of the seed. they won't even eat where was Apple and less I cut them up. I know I have spoiled them! 🙄😁Ha !

    These also come in pink. Especially in the northern Bahamas. In the more southern islands they grow all year round. Very sweet and delicious. In The Bahamas they are sometimes very sweet. It all depends on the kind of soil and bow much rain falls. Some people make jelly and wine from the meat.

    I'd like to say its because I would never want to ride the coattails of Green D. However its out of sheer laziness on my part. Even if you are not experienced , as long as its disclosed it may be very useful to cover a specimen in a particular location and time of year. Green D. cannot be everywhere at once, and even to cover the common milkweed just in its edible state would take 4 times, and then it might be useful in a location that also has dog bane.

    I found these in my backyard! I didn't know what they were but I found them. I decided to try one and I didn't really like it, but I thought it was cool.

      @@papagomama Thanks for the feedback. Let me ask you what variety was it? It sounds as though it was the Purple-black variety because you seed it was sweet, but then you said it was bland, so it made me considered it was probably the white or yellow variety so the middle between the both puts me at the final answer of red variety! how was the guess on the variety?

    I have greatly enjoyed your videos but compared to your other videos this one seems a bit light on information. I watched twice and think you missed the scientific name and some additional information. They are Chrysobalanus icaco and some writers call them a member of the Rosaceae or rose family and others place them in a Family of their own - Chrysobalanaceae.
    I'll have to consider trying them as jelly and wine if I get the chance.

    Hey Green Deane, i do have a question!
    where i live is in a apartment complex, and for year ive been chewing on this type of plant, it's like a clover looking plant and always has a yellow flower on it, but both has a taste the flower is sour and the clover has a minimal taste to its not sweet a little on the tart side i would like to know what plant it is!!! please help me see if its poisonous or not. Thank you

      Kenny Yolo what you're describing sounds like wood sorrel which is indeed edible and is very nutritious.

    Would some one be allergic to the nut of this fruit if they are allergic to peanuts?

      I would consult your allergy doctor first, but a peanut is a legume not a tree nut. I would think they would be more like a cashew almond but I would consult a doctor before trying and not nut/seed part. And as with any new fruit/vegetable specialty forged make sure it is what you think it is try only a small amount the time you try something. Especially if you have any food allergies.
