Where are my singers at. I’m a classically trained soprano, and I was told how to breathe at an early age. (sometimes I’m a little bit lazy.) It helps me to move around a little maybe exercise before singing. Of course it’s been awhile since I’ve played clarinet.
I also do chorus but I’m an alto however I can sing mezzo soprano and tenor and I was also taught how to breath properly along with the fact that I’m in band I’ve definitely needed to master that skill
@@Emma02008 Ever since I was little I was classified as Soprano however when I went to my middle school chorus I became an alto and along with that I listen to a lot of male singers so when I sing along I just eventually learned how to unlock the lower notes by dropping my larynx, my current chorus teacher is teaching us how to use head voice right now and so by using those techniques I’ve also discovered how to sing higher pitches that I never even thought I could sing, but the reason I say Mezzo soprano is because I know my voice genuinely has a darker tone so when I do sing higher notes it’s not like a true soprano
Same with brass instruments. Playing too hard gives me headaches and general pain around my body. I’ve even had my vision go dark multiple times while playing in marching band
Being able to play 4 measures in marching band specifically is good because you’re much more active and need more air from all the movement. If you’re sitting down 4 measures wouldn’t be a lot so you should aim for 8, 4 measures for marching band is perfectly fine
I realized a while ago that my tongue often stuck to the roof of my mouth when I wasn’t paying attention, but I didn’t know why. I’ll make sure to pay attention to when it’s right and when it’s right. Thanks!
I play clarinet in school and I was having rlly bad headaches thru out the week😭 lol whenever it happens to me I always make sure to drink water, it’s important to bring water to band class too bc clarinet can take a lot out of you, any instrument will. Especially with getting a new reed thickness. Stay safe fellow band geeks!!😼
I play French horn with is a brass instrument but even though I breathe through my mouth when I’m playing, I breathe through my nose correctly when I’m not playing
I play both Clarinet and Tenor sax and I literally live for that….they usually teach you to breath with your stomach and not with your chest because number one it allows you to gain more air and number two it allows you to use your diaphragm to help control that air, my chorus teacher told us that singers actually have wider rib cages because of the way we use our body I feel like posture also has a lot to do with this and with the tongue it’s a muscle so after a while you just kinda get used to it I suppose
I used to get headaches from playing when I was in beginning band but that was when we were doing our first longer songs so the pressure was weird to me, also the vibrations might have some impact but usually there’s this rubber grip thing that we put on the mouthpiece to help absorb the vibrations after a while I eventually stopped having those symptoms though
I play bass clarinet in marching band, I relate to neck/upper back pain For the breathing thing our band director makes everyone do breathing exercises to make sure the band has good air flow
Im a bari sax player and probably have permanent nerve damage due to carrying that heavy instrument several hours a day and this is what im gonna be paranoid about😭
There is NO reason why wind instrument players must inhale with the mouth at all times. Mouth inhalation becomes habitual because teachers DEMAND that when teaching. The tongue can also be placed more naturally when playing. I use nose inhalation primarily and play with the oral posture in a more natural state. No issues. Many benefits.
I think it’s taught because you use your diaphragm more effectively to store air and play with a better sound , or well that’s what my teacher told me (I play alto) but I do see benefits with nose breathing like circular breathing and such. I’m guessing the only downside is when your congested though.
@starryradiofm actually nose inhalation is more linked to diaphragmatic breathing. Better oxygen absorption. NO2 absorption. Humidification filtering and warming of the air are all benefits. And it has ZERO effect on embouchure disturbance. Yes, your teacher likely told you stuff as teachers who taught your teacher.
I have to sit up straight all the time to make it a habit so that I look nice in concerts, I do make sure to not force a completely straight back and to do stretches at home :)
This is why I don’t play on clarinet often, honestly I’m trying to switch to trombone my clarinet is just not one I could practice on or play at home because of how insanely loud it is, I have an piano and guitar and they aren’t as loud, the same day I stopped from the loudness my ears were bleeding now this isn’t the instrument itself, my house is very antique and wider so the echo range blasts off at a more movable area the echo range causes the sound to overlap, also with that since my house is wider the sound waves that escape and are more free to play a sound then in the band room but that’s the only place I play it and I’m still better then others in my row that practice everyday 💀 (and also I’m only in band for the grade since I know piano and then guitar 6 years later and what not I could know the notes and get an easy A+ and even though I wear the hoodie everyday it’s the only comfortable hoodie I have as of now so I’m in band but I don’t make it my whole personality I just treat it like a class (for those band kids still with no friends) also I’m just really built for piano, the coolest instrument
Don’t worry you’ll be fine, however specifically since you play flute you should definitely practice breathing because you guys use as much air as tubas do because most of the air doesn’t even go into the flute so that’s the only thing I would say but I’d say you’ll be ok
How does your tongue being positioned lile that cause bad breathing? Your tongue is place like that for all brass instruments as well but ive never heard anyone say anything about how your tongue negatively affects your breathing. Can you explain?
I wonder if me, a trombonist, will suffer any lip issues from playing a brass instrument. For those who don’t know while playing brass you have to buzz your lips to make any sounds and sometimes you have to double tongue which is shuddering your tongue really fast against the roof of your mouth.
The issues for clarinetists are nothing compared to oboists and bassoonists. A very small minority of clarinets will have issues, and then that's usually due to other problems being worsened by the clarinet. Oboists on the other hand... They really need to be aware of how much they make time to rest
You’re supposed to breathe through your mouth when yo play, so the air goes in the instrument. Also my nose is closed permanently, so I can only breathe through my mouth 24/7
