    I went to JOANN fabric and crafts and was able to pick up non-slip bottom, felt center, and velvet topper for less that $30. I was covering a circular table so cut 3 circles and finished the edge of the velvet with a drawstring so I can just tighten it around the lip of the table. It works perfectly. Thanks Michael!

    Thanks for the Great Idea!
    We love to camp and play games and picnic table surfaces just are not good for that, but your mat will solve the gap problem. I found some leftover flooring underlayment felt that is just perfect for it, it is a little under 1/8" thick and holds the felt covering like light-duty velcro. It had a plastic film on the bottom that ripped off easily and it makes a firm yet soft cover, firm enough to hold up Mexican Train tiles on edge.
    Better yet, I didn't have to buy anything!

    Very cool idea. I have also been doing some research on making a DIY board game table topper (which is why I stumbled upon this video) with plywood and some other materials, may have to use this idea for the play area.

    • @TheNerdShelves

      I'm glad this video has helped with some ideas. Having a plywood table topper adds the benefit of being able to save a game and move it without disturbing the board. But it is also less convenient to store and travel with. Good luck ♥️.

    5mm neoprene mat does the trick well for me. It has a similar coloured finish to yours (slightly darker), cushions well for cards and dice, doesn't slide and is water resistant. Though not sure how I'd get a real spill out, it might be washable in the machine, but haven't had that problem yet. Your top layer would probably be easier to wash, I guess, but apart from that Neoprene is an all in one layer solution.

    • @TheNerdShelves
      @TheNerdShelves  3 роки тому

      I actually really wanted to use neoprene, but found it to be quite expensive, in Canada anyways. I'm sure it's amazing to play on.

      I looked into neoprene, but wasn’t sure how it would feel during gameplay - how has your experience been? does it stay in place on the table well with elbows/some pushing from players? Do cards slide across nicely?

    • @TheNerdShelves
      @TheNerdShelves  4 роки тому +1

      I have tried, actually. Unfortunately, the 2 layers need to move independently from each other. The top layer becomes shorter as you roll them, ending with one end being rolled up longer than the other.... If that makes sense.

    • @TheNerdShelves
      @TheNerdShelves  Рік тому

      Sure, no problem. My friend actually used similar material but wrapped it around a thin piece of plywood and tacked it on the bottom. That way they can move games off the table that are still in progress. I'm sure that would work well on a bed too.

  • @craigbarbblumer2551

    Do you fit the top layer to the edge of the table or do you let it flow over the edge? If it goes over the edge, how long?
    Thanks much I really liked this topper.

    • @TheNerdShelves
      @TheNerdShelves  3 роки тому +1

      Thank you so much for watching. I'm glad you enjoyed it... We actually do the opposite. We make our mats just slightly smaller than the footprint of the table. This way, there's an edge exposed on all sides, which gives a nice place for people to rest their arms on without crinkling up the edges of the mat. Think of it like an actual boardgaming table, there's always a wooden edge around the outside. In fact, on the far ends of the table, I've left extra room so players have a place to put their drinks 😁... I hope this helps.

    • @TheNerdShelves

      No, we didn't sew the edges. We wanted to be able to use different colour tops. What I did do was make sure each layer was a little bit bigger than the one below it. This allowed the layer to lie over the edge of the one below and not expose the other lawyers.
