- One of our all-time favorite series, and one of our favorite actors, combined to make a terrific series called It Takes a Thief for ABC Television in the late 1960s. This video clip is an interview with Robert 'RJ' Wagner as he talks about the making of the series and how proud he was to be an integral part of the show, playing master thief Alexander Mundy.
It Takes a Thief was a cool, exotic, breezy series that ran during that 'hip' time of the late 1960s and very early 1970s. The cast of actors assembled each week was top notch and the series always had a level of charm that has held up very well over the decades. If you binge watch any TV series during this COVID-19 challenging time, It Takes a Thief is one series we highly recommend. It will bring a smile to your face.
The series ran from January 1968 to March 1970, and ran for many years in syndication. We believe it is still streaming on Hulu, or at least was when NBC/Universal was part owner of Hulu. With Disney purchasing a greater portion of Hulu this past year (as it gained ownership control of 20th Century Fox), that NBC/Universal connection with Hulu has changed, but we do hope fans can still tap into Alexander Mundy and the show anytime they want somewhere via VOD and/or streaming option (the new NBC-based Peacock?) For those who might like to own the DVD set of the show, it is highly (highly) recommended and is available on Amazon, B&N, etc. This interview clip (the interview is a full half-hour long) is included in this terrific DVD package and is one of our prized series DVDs in our Television Vanguard library.
Enjoy ! Part 1 of the interview today, part 2 later this weekend.
"Oh look Al, I'm not asking you to spy... I'm just asking you to steal."

One of my all time favorites
Alexander Mundy was a perfect character and Wagner was perfect in the role
I always loved Mr. Robert Wagner since l was young lady .now that l am aged l still adore his personality and his style.🌷🌷
One of the "Sharpest" tv shows of that era. The Fashions were then!!! & Now!!! Loved it!!!!!
In my 67 years of life, I have 5all time favorite tv series, " The green Hornet ", with my buddy the late Van Williams, " The fall Guy " with my also buddy Lee Majors, " Law & Order, Special victim's unit ", " Hawaii 5-0 " ( 2010 ) with Alex O'Loughlin, and " It takes a thief ", because is the 1st series I ever really liked, it's my all time favorite. I studied in Mexico City in the mid 60's, my mom rest her soul used to fly back and forth like crazy between Chicago and Mexico City, in one of the flights she took from Mexico back to Chicago, Robert Wagner at next to her, he stated he was going back from Brazil , and he spent most of the time showing Mom and everyone else photos, and his passport, my mom stated he was a sweet heart with her, just on this along, I love Wagner, may God keep blessing him and his family always. He is one of the few celebrities I never met or ran across in the 20 years I worked as a Hollywood stuntman.
What I liked about Robert Wagner's character in this series as a young boy watching it is he was very intellectual and always very insightful which kind of made it sort of the thinking man's action adventure hero... more brains and less bullets. Plus, he's a great looking guy getting all the girls and had a very Magnetic Personality so you got to give dude his props! A real Class Act. Between him and Mike Connors as Mannix all I ever wanted to do was be a private investigator or get into law enforcement it seemed like the most exciting thing in the world as a child but after 30 plus years in law enforcement reality is a whole different story. However, I did meet my beautiful wife while on duty and we are still together after decades so everything turned out okay. Great memories watching these clips look forward to the DVDs
That’s a really great story- thanks for sharing it
I’m 69 you must be about the same age,
I’m not asking you to spy , I’m just asking you to steal.
Loved that show.
Let me get this straight, you want me to steal??

The man from uncle and it takes a thief my two favorite shows as a kid.

RJ is a true class act
Great series
1 of my favourites
Al Monday is still as cool as ever!!!!!
Robert Wagner forever Alexander Mundy, the show was unique and different, he wasn't a spy and one of my fav eppys was the one were the 5th Dimension was on and I think he got to kiss Marilyn McCoo..
thank you
Class act.
Always thought I'd grow up to be Alexander Mundy. Like Mr. Mundy better than James Bond.
Me and my buddy became pick pockets in 7th grade due to this tv series, (we always returned the items we took, ie. pens, wallets. ect.) just for fun, until a teacher caught me, and labeled me "sticky fingers" which I am still referred too to this day. Thanks Al : )
You look at a young Robert Wagner and you see a young DiNozzi Sr.
5th dimension was on one episode my favorite episode
Hi Donna... we agree 100%... our favorite of the many fine Thief episodes was the one that featured the 5th Dimension titled 'To Sing a Song of Murder' (air date Feb 23, 1970) from the final (season 3) season of the series run. We had a video clip from that episode here on Television Vanguard at one time early in our operation, but had to remove it over time due to copyright issues.
Nevertheless, the good news is that episode, and all the other episodes from Thief, are available on a fantastic DVD set which we highly recommend to fans. This RJ interview clip is from that DVD set. Check out Amazon or B&N, etc. for details on the package.
Take care and thanks for watching. - Television Vanguard staff
Just think, he was (is) one of the coolest cats in the world. It's depressing to think I'll look ten times worse than him when I get his age now.
Batman made it. It was a midseason replacement for Ozzie and Harriet in 1966.

Killer
the biggest problem I had with this show was the lack of action. When there was action it was always poorly handled by Wagner or his double. Compared to Robert Conrad , Wagner was a real wimp
If you think he is such a lightweight, why dont u watch him thrrow his beefed up body around as Jonathan Hart?
@@vindinArges pretty much the same complaint, Wagner just couldn't handle action
Why not make sure that you are truly saved by Jesus Christ and practice this way. Remorsefully confess with your heart your sins to Jesus Christ who is God and tell Him that you right now are repenting of your sins and you want to be born again of the Spirit from above. Tell Jesus that you are remorsefully sorry for breaking His commandments and that you are begging for forgiveness from Him. Allow His blood from the cross to wash away your sins. After this is done with your heart successfully the Holy Spirit will come to live within you and He will rebuild you from the inside out.
Look for signs that you are saved. Things like spreading the good news from Jesus, getting other people saved, a craving for the word of God, reading the Bible, etc… These things are known as a calling and fruit bearing. If you're not bearing fruit then keep doing it. Sometimes it takes time to get saved. Read Matthew chapter 13 from the King James Bible. God bless!!!!!!!!
He killed his wife, Natalie Wood.
with all due respect wheres the proof he has been scrutinized through a microscope and has never been convicted i would like to hear your opinion why you say that look forward to your response
No, he didn't. It was an accident.
Really? Did he? ...
Let's suppose: he really really did it -> this heavy cross he would have had to carry over almost 4 decades since then is an ultimate heavy one...
Let's give him some peace, she had 14% alcohol and took a pain pill with it , he didn't read his book Pieces of my Heart , he loved her read his daughters she will tell you he didn't kill her
