    Aw man, Day9 playing my favorite game, and on top of that, my favorite race, the undead!
    So first of all, the gog.com version has some wierd music. To get the amazing ORIGINAL Heroes 2 sountrack with freaking OPERA music, you need the original CD, which is very hard to come by these days (my friend had to burn one from a ISO file).
    Also, Day9, as a Necromancer, you NEVER want to buy normal zombies, nor mummies. They are stupidly expensive to upgrade, slows your hero down massively on the overland map, and they are crap in combat. Even mutant zombies and royal mummies aren't great, and should only be used for castle defense.
    Your first priority should be to get vampire lords as quic as humanly possible. Once you get them, you can take almost any engagement without casualties as they just revive themselves on the enemy.
    18:18 - The reason why Death Ripple did fuck all to those golems is because iron golems takes half damage from all spells.
    19:06 - You could have targeted the lower-middle golem and done splash damage to 3 golems instead of just 2!
    20:10 - There's zero reason to enter melee comat in this game while you have a ranged unit and the enemy aren't within your movement range. It may be a "cheap" way to play, but why lose units when you don't need to?
    24:00 - Just in case you wonder, the chance to curse for normal mummies is 20% on attack. For royal mummies, the chance goes up to 30%, it's pretty neat, but highly situational. I often throw my mummies on the most dangerous unit in the enemy army and hope for the best!
    24:10 - Liches may seem good on paper, but they are weak unless you are in the very late-game. They got fantastic defense, but low hit points. Because of the AI in this game, ranged units gets prioritized all the freaking time, meaning your liches will be picked off in smaller numbers (21:59 to see what I'm talking about). Their splash attack is nice, but it damages your own units (thank you Heroes 3, for fixing this). You should just build a mausoleum and let the liches generate (and pray that the month of plague doesn’t occur), while you focus on vampire lords!
    24:14 - Bone Dragons do have a special ability, they decrease enemy morale by -1, meaning you will often see neutral monsters freeze in combat, it's pretty neat. They are also insanely cost effective for their price at 1500 gold per dragon, though the building required to make them is expensive as all fuck!
    24:16 - They don't, zombies and skeletons are the only units in the Necromancer army without any special abilities.
    26:45 - You cannot change the difficulty on the original campaign, sadly.
    32:00 - Behold, a paladin, one of the weakest "ultimate units" in the game, at least stat-wise. You were lucky the artifact was guarded by this guy instead of a titan or black dragon (cause that can happen). However, when upgraded this guy becomes a crusader, and these guys are a necromancers worst nightmare. They strike twice similar to the wolves and deal DOUBLE damage to undead (they are also immune to curse, so mummies can't do shit to them). Be sure to not take these guys lightly if you run into them in the future Day9, they will SHRED you!
    34:35 - Day9 noooo, vampire lords are the best unit in the entire fucking game. Upgrading liches to power liches does nothing for their damage output. They get +10 hp, +1 defense, +1 speed and twice the amount of shots, but they also become one of the most expensive tier 5 unit in the game at 900 gold >_>
    34:45 - The attack and defense formula is very simple. Your hero adds his/her attack/defense to your creatures attack/defense. For each number of attack you have over the enemy, your unit will deal +5% extra damage. This also works in reverse, so for each point of defense a unit has above a units attack, it takes -5% less damage. This caps out at 50% both ways, meaning that for example if you have an attack skill of 20, and the enemy has a defense skill of 10, getting more attack will not do anything for you, as you've already capped out on 50%. Simply put, you can treat each attack skill as +5% more damage, and each defense skill as +5% less damage.
    37:00 - You should know, that while the undead are un-affected by morale, any living troop which fights alongside undead units takes a -2 penalty to their morale, giving them a 16,7% chance to freeze in combat. The archers may sound nice, but they will be pretty crap in combat, and possibly would have made better skeletons.
    Sorry for the wall of text, and thank you for playing my favorite game of all time, day9

      MangsandZerul Agreed on the fact that zombies and mutant zombies are crap, but c'mon, mummies aren't that bad to just leave 'em behind... you're being too harsh on them :)

    • @Mangs1337
      @Mangs1337 9 років тому +1

      mr2dax They're not bad, but when you got vampire lords they are just slowing down your hero. It's better to leave them behind until they've massed up :)

      @Mangs1337 9 років тому +1

      mr2dax That's the point, they are so good, the other units in your army will simply slow you down. Towards the late-game when dangerous armies are wandering about, you want your meat like mummies and zombies, with your army, but in the early stages where it's all about fighting weak creatures and picking up treasure, you want mobility over everything else :)

      MangsandZerul I started playing the Heroes series because my brothers had the games, and I was just a little scrub that wanted to be like them, and I never realized this game was this in-depth until only a few years ago as I started playing HoMMIII again as an adult and I realized how much was involved in the game (like how it was better to split Gelu's sharpshooters into groups instead of just massing them at first,) but this post made me realize other things were in play in the game. Thank you so much for this, making me realize that these games were hard because I was so young and headstrong, and not just unfair games because the computer could cheat

    Bone dragons decrease enemy morale, apparently. Also when vampires attack, units don't get to retaliate (like sprites). All of the special abilities are hidden and you have to find them out by yourself. Crusaders deal double damage to undead, trolls regenerate, wolves attack twice, etc.

    Man, this is such a nostalgia trip. I loved Heroes 2. I sucked at it but I put so much time into it. Then in Heroes 3, a friend of mine finally taught me how to play (he played on TOH heavily and had quite a bit of success). We put so much time into hot seat games. He'd usually get the better of me since my movement was so inefficient and he'd outdevelop me, but not always.
    I also loved Heroes 4, even if sometimes it feels like I'm one of the few that did. Sure, on release it was a mess and it took community support to balance it out (friggin vamps amirite), and the AI in skirmish mode was basically broken. But it was so interesting, so chock full of innovative ideas, and the campaigns were some of the best written anywhere. Plus, there was that EXTRAORDINARY soundtrack, even better than H2. Also it didn't hurt that in H4 I finally started winning regularly...
    Heroes 5 was a disappointment. It was polished system-wise but the art style was gone, and in its place was a generic Blizzard rip-off, and campaigns that could have been written by a 13 year old. The new developers simply didn't have that New World Computing magic even if they were very competent technically and systematically.
    Heroes 6... yeah, the less said the better. Maybe it was a good game, but I'll never know, since with the game crippling bugs and draconian DRM, I never really gave it a chance. Maybe I'm wrong on that but there's only so much publisher-driven BS I can tolerate.
    Sadly, there's still nothing like Heroes 2-4 today. Age of Wonders evokes some of the feel but it's missing the charm and diversity of sides. Ubisoft seems content with releasing shabby, broken remakes that barely show any effort (there's a lot of backstory to this but it's been far more Ubisoft's fault than any developers), and I don't see anybody else stepping up to the plate and offering a spiritual sequel.
    Weirdly enough, I found the closest equivalent of Heroes' tightly-focused turn-based strategy and fantasy charm in Blood Bowl. Even if it is a completely different genre.

    First turn; I'll leave some tips for the wandering viewer on how to play the game without being a total noobgoblin.
    Going for the statue on turn 1 seems a good idea because you get more money out of it the sooner you build it and many a novice heroes have fallen for the temptation; but a wiser necromancer knows that having spent that five extra ore can really bite him in the ass later on. Had you build mage guild you might have gotten magic arrow which will kill many enemies in the first battles, but bloodlust, curse, and stoneskin are also good to wipe out the mobs in your territory when you only have a few units under your command.
    It is important to realize that your slowest unit determines how far you can move on the map; zombies hinder your early momentum which can break early expansion and your campaign. The advanced player knows that there's a cheesy move where you can garrison your slowest units in the castle at the end of your turn and pick them up the next turn so you can move further than you should; but be warned that should your castle be attacked that turn then screwed thou shall be.
    Always pick the "useful new skill" when leveling up. There's a small chance you won't be able to get it later on. Ballistics is very useful for your "main hero" to wreck enemy defenses and take his castle with only a few losses. Even if you are a strong magic user that knows the Earthquake spell, you'd rather use your casting round on another spell wouldn't you? Advanced Wisdom on the other hand is totally useless until the end-game; if your main hero already has Basic Wisdom you should only pick an extra level if the alternative is a skill you really don't want/need of when thou hast the resources to build a level 4 mage guild.
    Don't be afraid to skip on the free xp and go for the gold when picking up chests; unless thou hast a good reason, gold usually the better option. A true hero gains levels by crushing enemies, buy war bonds! Spend that extra cash on recruiting heroes and dump their "free" units into your main hero's army seems expensive compared to recruiting low tier units the normal way. But will give you the power to rush into enemy territory and catch them with their pants down. The key to victory is how fast you can move units around and creating a network of heroes early on grants you more flexibility and is will worth the investment.

    • @Tennouseijin
      @Tennouseijin 4 роки тому

      All these tips are dependent on the situation and playstyle though.
      1. What you build during week 1 and the order depends on both your starting resources and what you have available nearby. And on your strategy. If you have plenty of gold and/or limited ore, sure, save that ore for something more immediately useful. If you have plenty of ore but little gold, the statue might be the better investment. Whether you're planning to end week 1 with vampires, liches, or even bone dragons, will also effect how you allocate your resources and construction-turns.
      2. Advanced players may know this, but I don't find myself doing it much if ever. I just don't recruit slow units, unless they're needed for castle defense. And heroes rarely sit in castles.
      3. This tip generally applies to the main hero - secondary heroes rarely reach skill limit, so I would take say advanced logistics or advanced estates on a secondary hero, before choosing say basic luck. Also, some strategies go for early lvl 4-5 mage guild, in which case going for early advanced/expert wisdom makes sense. And also there are those who don't care about ballistics and earthquakes, and just swarm enemy castles with fliers, shooters, or teleport skeletons/hydras/whathaveyou over the walls.
      4. Personally, I always choose experience from chests. For one, I tend to play defensively, going for long completionist games in which typically I end up with more gold than I need anyway. Early game, more often I find myself short on resources than gold, while late game I'm swimming in both, whereas experience is harder to get. Considering the fact for 1000 gold you can buy one crusader, whereas to get 500 exp you would need to kill 8 crusaders. For 1000 gold you could buy 20 halflings, but to get 500 exp you would need to kill 167 and so on... I consider chests to be cheap experience. And you tend to find plenty of other pickups that just give you gold anyway. However, I acknowledge that more aggressive playstyles, especially those going for high scores, aiming to end games within the first few weeks (mine sometimes go for in-game years ;) ) might benefit from picking the gold. And I assume multiplayer might have entirely different dynamics as well, though I've mostly played single player, or occasionally PvP against friends who... let's say don't have tournament experience either.
      Still, this comes down to playstyle - I like having lvl 20+ heroes in endgame, having all skills on expert and reaching that point when level ups just give you plain stat upgrades, and when your hero runs around with a few stacks of titans, maybe some black dragons and phoenixes for company, clearing up all the remaining tier6 neutrals from the map. Someone else might like winning during week1, max week2. To each his own.

    first, split your skeletons into multiple stacks of 1s, then surround your lichs with skeletons to protect them so melees cannot hit them.
    second, instead of upgrading the zombie and building the mummies, build the vampire and upgrade it asap.
    third, use the well to replenish your mana and increase your movement speed.
    fourth, pick up the lumber mill first on the first turn.
    fifth, hire another hero and scout for the stone quarry on the first turn.
    lastly, upgrade your skeleton and fill your slots with them, this way whenever you get skeletons after combat, they will be automatically upgraded.

    I used to play this game all day every day in the 90's. Its the best heroes of Might and Magic game. The map editor is where its at. Make the largest map available. Put the enemies really far away and fill the world with plenty of resources and enemies and then spend litetal hours vieing for control (with a couple of naughty cheetingly placed assets close to your castle)

    This game was my first videogame ever, on my old Pentium II. I lost the track of it, but a few years ago I got the collection pack for Heroes I, II, III and IV fo about 6$. So much fun.

    Excellent video. Why couldn't the PS2 game Heroes Of Might and Magic - Quest for the Dragonbane staff have the features from this game (guilds, more mines (sulfur), etc...) - would have been awesome having a more complete version of this updated to the PS2.

    Really love HoMM 2. The asymmetry between the races was really cool to see, as they really had identity. A lot of people like HoMM3 better, but I personally found that with each town having dwelling upgrades made the races homogeneous (and not to mention like half the races had a variant dragon for their best unit). Really bugged me having a mix of Skeleton and Skeleton Warrior in HoMM3 (necromancy doesn't give warriors unlesss you had a full army) for example, while in here you just go with your skeleton horde, get your Liches then your Bone Dragon power spike.

      +Kaktusfamnar just use dosbox. It's a program that emulate old dos games which is making game playable fully. GOG games are for example automatic being used by dosbox after install. I'm playing it a lot thanks to this software
