    Not sure if you’ll see this but I recently received a K5-A from a cousin that bought it at a yard sale. By watching your videos it’s helped me feel confident in cleaning it up. I did have a question as to what kind of degreaser you use or method for getting the gear box so clean.

    Thanks so much for all these helpful videos! I'm about to attempt a grease and gasket replacement in a (seemingly) fully functional K5-A I bought on Craigslist. I wish you would show more reassembly videos in real time.
    On another note, I wonder if I am the only viewer who physically cringes every time you casually toss each piece of removed hardware onto your bench. My dad taught me to always put parts in a container. This practice was drilled into my head by age six!

      Thanks, I probably should do a thorough reassembly video one day. I used to keep everything separated but now it is unnecessary extra step, everything goes back in a specific place, and much easier and faster to clean fasteners all together instead of separate.

    Hey, I have completely refurbished my kitchen aid k5a I’m up to the speed control plate, I have a broken part and I’m unsure of what the name for it is. It’s the tiny metal plate that goes on to a scew and a hex nut, it attaches to the governor with that plate and without it I have no speeds just the highest speed.

    • @vintagemixersandmore1666
      @vintagemixersandmore1666 4 роки тому +1

      I think I know the part your referring to, the spring attaches to it to pull it to the governor. You may have to fabricate something to hook the spring to, unless you can find a replacement part on ebay. I have seen them on ebay before, the speed control plate, that will probably be your best bet.

    Hi! I was wondering what is the use of that wick? I found one in my K5A, just unsure if it needs replacement, or just to find a way to put it back inside when i rebuild. Thanks!

    • @vintagemixersandmore1666
      @vintagemixersandmore1666 4 роки тому +3

      Hi! The wick will soak up the oil from the grease as it begins to break down, and is supposed to help lubricate the bushing that is there, but it must not have been effective as kitchenaid did away with it completely at some point, I never reinstalled them.

    I took my mixer (KMS5) a part because my 6 year old grandson seen the mixer sitting on our back porch... I just unloaded from our rv. He carries it into the house to help and he dropped it. I plugged it in and there was a wicked grinding noise... I watched this video and then took it apart ... The gears looked great so I cleaned it up and put new grease in it.. But it will not go back together.. I never removed the motor so should I remove it or not

      Solid state control plates are available new. The pre solid state control speed plates have to be sourced from a donor machine, since they are no longer manufactured.

    What sort of grease do you repack these with? I've seen your videos and most appear to be a red lucasoil product, but some people are stating that you must use food-safe grease. Do you have any input? I have a KitchenAid 4-C that I am restoring.

    • @vintagemixersandmore1666
      @vintagemixersandmore1666 5 років тому +4

      I feel it is personal preference. I use the lucas oil grease over the kitchenaid food safe grease for several reason. It doesnt break down and seperate, like the KA grease will over time. Once the KA grease breaks down or gets warm, it will leak out the gasket and stain the machine, get under the band, and possibly leak into the food. The lucas oil will not leak out due to its stability. Some still prefer the KA grease, and that is fine, it is personal preference. I look at it like this, if the grease stays inside the gearbox where it belongs, then foodsafe becomes irrelevant. Use what you feel comfortable with, hope this helps!!

    Hi Rick. I guess you are not getting my comments. Are you still answering questions on this channel? How do I determine if my contacts are good/bad or if that even is the problem? I have to adjust the speed way below 250 RPMs on speed 1 to get the speed to increase on the higher ends. I 've switched out the governor 3 times with no arcing on any. I even cleaned all of them with some light sand pape andI switched the coil once with the same results. The resistor is good as well. I keep choosing different videos to ask you this question thinking you might see it thinking you have already answered. Let me now. Thanks, Jim Watson.

      Hi Jim! Sorry, I havent checked my comments in a while, been remodeling my front porch for days! Your speed on 1 should be 60 RPM at the planetary, so set that first, then see how the rest of the speeds are.

I've asked before how do I determine if the points are good? IVE TRIED 5 DIFFERENT GOVERNORS IN THIS ONE MACHINE AND ICANT GET THE SPEED TO CHANGE.The resistor Is good. Is there a way to check the points? The speed adjustment pin works properly. Thanks.

      @@JimWatsonTheframingMagician Hi Jim! Have you removed the capacitor and tried it to see if you have speed control back? If so, then the capacitor has a dead short and needs to be replaced. Other than that, it is usually an issue with either the speed control or the pin from the governor on the armature. Just a few more things to check if you havent yet already

    Your videos are amazing! My Hobart Kitchenaid K45 started smoking the other day, and I've been using your videos to help troubleshoot. One thing I found was that the yellow wire terminal on the control plate looks burnt (black and ashy). I've been trying to find a replacement control plate (part number 4159678) but it seems to be discontinued, and I can only find the solid state version of the control plate. Do you have any recommendations of where I could find one of these old K45 control plates? Or is my best bet conversion to SS? Thank you!

    • @vintagemixersandmore1666
      @vintagemixersandmore1666 5 років тому

      Hi Tegan, thanks!! The speed control plates have been discontinued for a long time, so a new one is out of the question, you will have to source one from a parts machine. Personally I like the idea of switching to SS speed control, I did swap a machine over, and someone commented they had done the same thing without replacing the coil, just rewiring it. I can see that working well. They also reused the lever, rear bearing plate, and speed control plate, but if you are switching the speed control plate, I believe you will need to replace the lever at the very least. I like the swap because the new plates dont have points on the contacts to wear, and no large hot resistor, and extra capacitor. Good luck!
