    I wish I could move the frets on my guitar like you just showed. It would open countless possibilities for me to explore

    The Lute & Gamba family have moveable frets too because major thirds in equal temperament are really outta tune & the adjustable frets can fix it.

    Wonderful video, great tips! I was having troubles with a C note on a fret. Tuned the sitar in C but when I play the first C on the 7th fret it's not perfectly in tune. so by moving the fret towards the bridge should I get the perfect pitch?

    • @JeffStarr
      @JeffStarr  2 роки тому +1

      Yes, each fret can be shifted (some more than others) to help you dial in the pitch.

    carnatic veena has separate frets for komal and shudha swaras... so that without much hassle ragas involving shudha and komal swaras together in the same raga can be handled easily (for example vivadi ragas) how do you handle suc ragas in sitar

    Hi there, I played 18 years ago Sitar & nothing since so I just god back into it, and I find for my restart your videos quite helpful. Now I have a question as in your speed video 200 bPm you use some finger protection on your left hand, but what are they as I had problems before with my fingers on the left hand as well!

    • @JeffStarr
      @JeffStarr  6 років тому +1

      I would have taped my fingers. Its very helpful when your fingers are sore. I made a video recently about building calluses and I talks about some tips and tricks I've found useful over the years. Check it out: ua-cam.com/video/xxeq2TxrFp8/v-deo.html
      Also, thanks for watching! I'm glad my videos are helpful!!

    Hello Jeff Nice video! I want to know how to move the sitar frets when the frets is so close to the sympathetic strings. it's so hard to move it. Thank you :)

    • @JeffStarr
      @JeffStarr  6 років тому +1

      Are you having trouble moving the fret because it is too close to the tuning pegs for the sympathetic strings and those pegs are in the way? Let me know so that I can help answer your question correctly. Sitar can be tricky! Thanks for watching my video and leaving a comment.

    • @bayuandrianto4050

      @@JeffStarr Yes it's totally right! close to the sympathetic pegs. Shall I Move the pegs or let it the notes little be out of tune?

    • @JeffStarr
      @JeffStarr  6 років тому +1

      Normally you don’t need to move the frets very much unless it’s specific notes (Re, for example) and the raga requires it. The adjustment should be fairly slight. If you are finding that you can’t move the frets enough then the issue is likely that your neck has shifted due to humidity (this is normal) and you need to adjust the placement of your bridge. This is something you need to be careful about though because you are opening up a can of worms if you move the bridge. Changing the placement of the bridge will make changes to the scale length of your instrument. When you change the scale length you also change where your string needs to be fretted and thus you change where you need your frets to sit on the neck. This will fix the issue so that your frets only need to be adjusted within the space allowed by the pegs. Does that make sense? If you are not familiar with setting up a string instrument I would suggest taking your sitar to a luthier to have the adjustments made.

      @@JeffStarr Yeah you right Jeff, I actually not familiar with the sitar. Cause, I only 4 month playing a sitar and in my country so hard to find a sitar guru. Actually my Guru is a tabla player, but he a little bit know about sitar. Okay Jeff I think I have to find a luthier to fix my sitar. I think my neck is shifted. Thank you so much for answering my problem Jeff. Are you still take a sitar lesson? How long until your teacher taught you some Raga composition, like raag yaman? is one year or two? Cause I still do a Sargam Compilation over this 4 month of lesson. haha 🙏

    • @JeffStarr
      @JeffStarr  6 років тому +1

      It will take a while to learn compositions. Most likely the Sargam exercises you are doing now are actually teaching you Yaman too. I still take lessons and I continue to post videos about the sitar on my UA-cam channel. I;mgoing to post a link to a video that may be helpful for you; I show how I tuned my sitar without needing to adjust the bridge even though my neck has shifted. ua-cam.com/video/31GfkLz-XrU/v-deo.html

    Do you find it better to tune the sympathetic string by plucking it directly or tune it by playing the corresponding fretted note on the main string?

    • @JeffStarr
      @JeffStarr  7 років тому

      +Reginald Mizer I start tuning the sympathetic by plucking it directly. Then, as needed, I will adjust to make sure it it blooming when I play my main string. It's an endless cycle of tuning the main string, the frets, the sympathetically, the main string again, etc etc. :) thanks for watching and I hope that helped to answer your question.

  • @hobbitronicfunk
    @hobbitronicfunk 6 років тому

    You tune to Ma (G) for your main playing String?? I thought it was normally Da (F or F#), have I been tuning wrongly? My tuning is F=C-G-C (main) G-C-C (Chikari) if that helps

    • @cara7196
      @cara7196 6 років тому

      There’s a standard tuning (c) and that’s how you are tuned but you can tune it in G Because that is an alternate tuning(kinda like guitar)

      By far the most common tuning for sitar in Indian classical music is C# - Main open string is F# so 7th fret is the SA.

    Is there a specific reason why the sitar does not have frets, fixed or movable ones, for all 12 semitones?

      Ian S. Cophin I think the reason is that raga music doesn’t really have a western equivalent

    Hey I recently just got my first sitar a month ago and i have a question i was hoping you could help me with. From what i gathered the three main keys sitars tune to are C C# and D, but what if i wanted to tune to other keys? I've been trying to learn a song by Traffic called 'Utterly Simple' ua-cam.com/video/JcpZqNWb9jU/v-deo.html and to me it sounds like his sitar is tuned to F#. My question to you is how would i go about tuning to F# to play this? I'm currently in D like you are, should i tune upward or downward? I'm afraid the chikaris may snap going higher than D.
    Any input would be appreciated and many thanks for the videos! Been very helpful in my first month of learning the sitar! :)

    • @JeffStarr
      @JeffStarr  6 років тому +1

      Hi. I checked out the Traffic song and it sounds like his sitar is tuned to C#. I personally wouldn't tune higher than D# without fear of the strings breaking. I'm glad my videos are helpful!! That's fantastic. Enjoy the world of the sitar!
