I started my journey as a driving instructor 20 years ago when my son wasn't even born and today I gave my son his first driving lesson to move the car off - AMAZING!
We don't remember days but we remember moments - today was one of those moments that I will remember for my remaining days. I wish my son and all learners well
to learn and pass driving test easily and quickly.

I was taught to always signal when moving off regardless of whether there is anyone there or not. That seems more logical as you never know when someone could creep up without you noticing.

Yes, if you’re not sure you should always put it on as like you said someone could creep up. But the idea of just put it on anyway doesn’t allow you to check properly if safe or not.
You must make sure it’s fully safe and this “must make sure” will make sure check properly and not just a quick look for the sake of checking and not actually looking carefully. If checked carefully and properly most of the time you’ll recognise what might be about to creep up, and if not sure then you can always put the signal on.
So the point is CHECK PROBABLY and if not sure then put the signal on, and if sure 100% then NO SIGNAL.

@@DrivingTV In Australia you must indicate for at least 5 seconds before moving off from a parked position. You must also check your mirrors and right blindspot. The indicator needs to be on regardless otherwise you cop a signal error in your test. As I say, this seems more logical as you never know when someone could creep up or even someone opposite who is parked and decides to move off. I remember being taught something similar in the UK around 30 years ago. Perhaps things have changed.
People learn by habit though so I feel like it should be encouraged.
