I’m going to guess (tongue in cheek) that Sagan had billions of things to say about it.
But there is bon mot in the same vein, “A man said to the universe, ‘Sir I exist!’ to which the universe replaced, ‘that does instill in me a sense of obligation’ “

If you truly want to know the Truth, do these four simple steps. Forgive your parents, brake down before Jesus, ask for forgiveness, and read the Bible. There's deep spiritual significance in these steps. After doing them sincerely, God gives you a Divine Revelation. I'm not talking about fuzzy feelings, signs, or talking to yourself, but an actual honest to goodness conversation between you, and God. These steps are the mustard seed of Faith God wants to see from us. He won't reveal himself until you do them guininly. Don't believe me, nor anyone else, do these steps and get the Truth for yourself. I can say with absolute certainly that they work 100% of the time. You just have to be guinine, it's not hard, you will know if you're not, and so will God. If you're seriously interested in the Truth, this is the pathway to it. There's actually very important reasons everything is set up this way, and why Faith is key. God will inform you directly after you do these steps, explaining everything you need to know personally. Very serious here. An actual one on one conversation. Not feelings, not signs, not anything you're going to misinterpret. An extremely real event. You see, Faith is important because it's something we can all find inside of ourselves. It doesn't matter how smart you are, how much money you have, or weather or not you're imprisoned. You can always Hope. This is why it's the only way to God. Forgiveness trips up most people, especially Christans. People just don't find it easy, it hurts us a bit. That's why it's the most important step. To be forgiven, we must forgive. It's all over the Bible. But most people never bother reading it, let alone actually doing the work God gives us. You see, all sin is unforgivable to God, that's why he has Grace, because he's still willing to forgive us, especially when we can't bring ourselves to forgive ourselves. But he wants us to follow his example. Jesus explained this in Matthew, by parable. If we do not forgive what we think is unforgivable, God will not forgive us. This message is littered all thoughout the Bible, both old, and new testament. Most Christans, like 99%, only ever open their Bible in church, otherwise it's a paper weight, and sadly most churches don't emphasize the truly important message. Our problems with our parents are meant to represent our problems with God, this is why we all have them. Once we show the willingness to forgive their inadequacy, God pays closer attention to us. Before this step you're not saved, no matter how many times you go to church. This is why God stays at arm's length. Once you put in the inner work, showing this mustard seed of Faith, God rushes into your life in a very real way. I'm not talking about fuzzy feelings, signs, etc, but an actual, honest to goodness conversation between you, and God. No one else can do these steps for you. You have to do them for yourself. People may lie, say they did them, and nothing happened, but don't let their words sway you. Do these steps for yourself. I can say with absolute certainly that these steps work. You've just got to be guinine. It's not hard. You'll know if you're coming from the right place. Testing God only makes him hide himself. Be sinsere, do these four simple steps, and you'll be enlightened to so much you've blinded yourself to. There's so much you've allowed yourself to forget. Please, take your salvation seriously.

Hitchens's Razor does NOT work in this scenario.
A man asserts he does't dream. Never dreamt since birth. All he knows is he slept and then he wakes up. Obviously, he cannot prove his dreamless sleep. Only he has knowledge of his dreamless sleep
To dismissed his dreamless sleep since he was born. You must prove he'd experience dreams.

    Sagan's Baloney Detection Kit:
    1. 3:08 Wherever possible there must be independent confirmation of the “facts.”
    2. 4:03 Encourage substantive debate on the evidence by knowledgeable proponents of all points of view.
    3. 5:14 Do not accept arguments from Authority.
    4. 6:19 Spin more than one hypothesis.
    5. 7:17 Try not to get overly attached to hypothesis just because it's yours.

      ---
      Explanation:
The Great Reset is wiping our way of life off the face of the earth and installing an overtly tyrannical rulership. If you google "Georgia Guidstones" and kind of read between the lines you will get an idea of how comprehensive it is. 911 was the start, Covid is the continuation, and dictatorial authority and global nuclear war are the final acts of the takeover.
Deep State have put their plans for us into the movies, tv and news for many decades. The above pasted list also has a few 911 references so we can see how they tell us what they're gonna do, then they do it. We all know 911 was done by the US gov, not Arabs in a cave.
They've been telling us about 923 (probably September 2023) at least since 1986 (movie Labyrinth with David Bowie and Jennifer Connelly). I can only assume that the nukes will fly then.
Be aware that some of the 923 references are obvious, others are obscure. For example, the letter "I" ("I" for India) is the ninth (9th) letter of the English alphabet so is another reference to "9". Also, the number "1" (one) looks like an "I" so it is sometimes used along with "23" to indicate "923" - this technique is used in the introduction to "The Simpsons". Other variations use a "6" as an upside down "9", and various combinations of the digits such as 239, 329, etc.
Stock up on B Vitamins (B for Brain). B supplements are necessary for us to handle stress.
This stuff can be scary at first. But after 3 months you will be very calm again.
Go through the list then pass it on to loved ones so they can be at least mentally prepared. These 923 videos are telling us about a significant event (probably nuclear war) in the future.
To see what they have done in the past, copy and save the list below in a Notepad document for future reference. It explains A LOT of things about the world and how it works. @Zealous: Yes, Carl Sagan was one of the true giants of science in context to his unrelenting criticism of what many scientists and all of the government, school systems. media, and truth distorters spewed out as scientific fact. "Extraordinary claims demand extraordinary proof" was the bar that most could not meet. However, Sagan is not resting in peace. Although he was wise enough to know that at apparent face value science and religion are mutually exclusive to each other. Religion is founded strictly on faith and belief whereas science is founded on proof only of physical manifestations or non-physical phenomena which could be measured. Sagan's difficulty was that he was SO SKEPTICAL that it overrode his ability TO HAVE FAITH in anything that wasn't physically or observationally tangible or measurable. I grieve for Carl Sagan. It was his check list for proof of science to establish my proof for God's existence.

Thanks. There is a basic idea that the average 'person on the street' gets wrong. And I grant you that they have a whole lot of help in doing so, from the press (many of whom know better), and even from some scientists who simply fail (or don't even try) to communicate effectively. That idea is this: science is not a collection of 'stuff we know'. It's a process by which we eliminate wrong answers. It's the same notion as saying that in a person's life, they strive for perfection. They know they'll never actually reach some final state of perfect being, but the effort is what's important. By utilizing the scientific method, we separate out the wrong answers. It is thus that we come ever closer to some set of correct ideas. But we will never, ever, "know everything." It's just not possible. Skepticism, logic, reason, and critical thinking are tools we must each use to arrive at a better answer than we had yesterday. That's the best we can do. And it's given us the most reliable body of workable concepts on Earth. Just keep in mind that no answer is final. tavi.

What began as youthful enthusiasm for figuring out a way to see who's most at risk for opioid addiction, later turned into stoic respect for why no such screening tool has been validated yet. I had to lay aside my pride from simply putting a wing and a prayer into my hunches, but instead had to identify all of the logistical, systemic, and knowledge barriers of why such studies are so difficult to perform. It turned out that I had to learn as much about how opioid addiction is different from opioid dependence and chronic pain from a neuroscientific, epidemiological, and psychiatric standpoint. Thats why i always laugh about Atheists who claim they 'know' God doesnt exist, cause thats literally and most literally just the other side of the spectrum of toxic Religious believe.
Being a Toxic Atheist aint a bit better than being a toxic Believer. Its dumb to talk like you know that God does or does not exist; BOTH.
No one has or can yet 'disprove/debunk' God, as someone allegedly so powerful cannot be disproven.
Everyone who states they know the Secrets of the Universe, REGARDLESS what exactly they claim these Secrets are, know nothing for real. So yeah, whetever its Aliens or Gods or even something else: That Earth is just 5 Minutes old and all Memorys are just Fabricated is totally possibly.

    1. 3:09 - Wherever possible there must be independent confirmation of the "facts."
    2. 4:04 - Encourage substantive debate on the evidence by knowledgeable proponents of all points of view.

    4. 6:19 - Spin more than one hypothesis.

    6. 10:06 - Quantify.
    7. 11:23 - If there's a chain of argument, every link in the chain must work (including the premise) - not just most of them.
    8. 12:13 - Occam's Razor. (a scientific and philosophical rule that entities should not be multiplied unnecessarily, which is interpreted as requiring that the simplest of competing theories be preferred to the more complex, or that explanations of unknown phenomena be sought first in terms of known quantities)
    9. 14:03 - Always ask whether the hypothesis can be, at least in principle, falsified. (Scientific falsifiability/refutability: the capacity for a statement, theory or hypothesis to be contradicted by evidence.)

There was no science course. The academy skipped it altogether. What i have learned about the Cosmos, and about nature itself, started because of him. Because people are stupid, they will believe a lie because they want to believe it's true, or because they are afraid it might be true. People’s heads are full of knowledge, facts, and beliefs, and most of it is false, yet they think it all true. I still don't understand why this isn't taught in every school. I'm not talking about this exact method, but about scientific skepticism in general, about logical fallacies, cognitive biases, illusions and other weaknesses of the mind. How are people supposed to understand that a method is needed when they don't understand how many mistakes we make without and even with a method?
Everyone should have encountered a course in scientific skepticism, the scientific method, logical fallacies and research methods at least once in their education. It's astonishing how few people use or even know about those things. And some think they know when in reality they've never consciously practiced those habits. This isn't something you hear once and then you're immune to nonsense. This is something that is difficult and requires practice. This is a constant struggle against your feelings, instincts and impulses.

Because truly independent thought requires minds to be completely free to question & challenge all ideas & assumptions ... like the assumption that your particular country and/or culture is automatically, inevitably the best one possible (a particularly common one here in the US).
Critical thinking skills are indeed invaluable to those wishing to protect themselves from bias, superstition & misinformation -- but when young minds are equipped w/ such tools they are viewed as an active threat to entrenched powers who want nothing more than to maintain control over our systems of economy, government & communication. ANY voiced opposition to the status quo, no matter how slight or reasoned, must be silenced or otherwise derided so much as to discourage others from even considering different points of view.
One of my favorite episodes of The Simpsons is "Lisa The Vegetarian" -- in which young Lisa Simpson, after yrs of happily eating meat w/o concern, finally makes the logical connection in her mind between meat consumption & animal slaughter at the dinner table after the Simpson family visited a petting zoo ... & the realization is so emotionally traumatic that Lisa declares she can never eat meat again.
Afterward, Lisa can't help but notice the very pro-meat orientation of both the school Health Class curriculum as well as the cafeteria student lunch program ... & when she voices her discomfort & opposition to this clear bias, the adult authority figures quietly press a button labeled "Independent Thought Alarm" to warn Principal Skinner that Lisa is becoming a "problem student" by openly challenging school policy. In response, Skinner calls in a livestock / food industry spokesperson to give a presentation to expound the virtues of meat consumption by showing an "educational film" -- which Lisa rightly calls out as nothing more than corporate propaganda.
It doesn't take a genius to see why the livestock industry has a vested interest in dictating & influencing the policy of the USDA & public school health education programs: if enough kids grow up vegan or vegetarian, the livestock industry as we know it would cease to exist. We can't have that -- just think of all the poor meat corporation executives!

The hurdle for science is that it does not innately tie itself to any culture. You cannot say science is anymore "Christian" than it is "Arabic" or "Muslim" or "Buddhist". Cultures survive by designing themselves with defensive measures against ideas that are universal, but also contradict their own beliefs.
In essence, a lot of this is a systemic problem. You yourself might think you can make a difference, but the truth is we have to change society to change religion.

Important note for your many premises point- this isn't always true. For example, if someone holds a belief on the basis of two arguments, and the falsification of one doesn't necessitate the falsehood of the other, then one argument being proven untrue wouldn't dismantle the whole belief. You hinted at this slightly when you mentioned the arguments being chained together, but I think it's important to stress. Otherwise, this is committing a fallacy fallacy, which hastily assumes that an entire argument is invalid just because of one or more fallacies.

I totally agree Wesley. But I weep even more that so much of the world's educated population are themselves deluded into believing similar absurdities. For example, try explaining to someone that the International Space Station footage is filmed in a studio on earth (you can see the cables in some shots) and its like you've attacked a religious icon. See for yourself bro.

Very clear and helpful explanation. I also appreciate the candor and lack of tendentiousness, which is enhanced further by a compassionate and empathetic outlook, even towards who disagree with some of his conclusions. I have recommended these videos to several people who are confused about how to approach some of these issues.

That's the major problem these days - people who most need to be more diversely informed are the ones who will wear out the block button until they are so entrenched in their own bias that there is no way out. There is no seeking truth for people who are certain they already know it.

#5 is the reason religions will (most likely) always exist.
I know many folks think it's the fear of fire, brimstone, and ever lasting torment that keeps them glued to their religious beliefs...but I completely disagree.
It's the hope of life after death, of seeing their loved ones again, that is the bond.
No matter how much science tries to steer the culture in a different direction, as long as their is death, religions will always exist.
It's human nature. No amount of rationality will change that.

When speaking of data, I might nitpick that we should seek versilimitude, not Truth....Truth is an abstract, and therefore suspect. Other than that, yes....more people should read Sagan. Absolutely!

IMO Sagan's rules are out-dated. They call for an approach which cannot stand up to the world of "alternative facts", the relegation of "fact-checkers" to a null role in debate so that they can safely be ignored, the view that the workings of logic and education are evidence of conspiracy and nefarious purpose, and the determination that criticism of any sort is oppressive censorship. Sagan's suggestions operate well in the marketplace of ideas, but when lies and falsehoods are given the same or more weight than actual ideas, the marketplace becomes an arena.
