Quick tip! When you fish streamers, set the hook with your line hand by stripping tight to the fish, then lift the rod to fight it. You'll get a better hookset, and if they miss the fly the first time you can keep stripping a lot quicker. This is called "strip setting", not necessary if you're fishing small flies for trout but when you're using bigger flies with bigger hooks it'll help you land more fish. Keep catching them on the fly!
Strip set is definitely something I need to work on, but it’s so hard coming from bass fishing and only trout fishing with a fly rod. Setting the hook is just my normal reaction
That 9wt was overkill for sure. I like to use my 6wt spey when fishing from the bank because I can make some monster roll casts. The 7wt is reserved for the yak.
@@loweryjake my spey rollcast, which is less than mediocre, rivals my open face cast when it comes to distance. The lakes in central Arizona have rocky, almost vertical banks so I can cover *a lot* of water with my long casts and 14' long rod length. I got the idea from guys who fish Pyramid Lake where they are fighting lots of wind and lots of water. It's basically a cross between traditional wide river spey and long distance saltwater fly fishing. If you're interested in the technical stuff just lmk and I'll explain a little deeper.
Because it’s fun and I believe it’s marginally disruptive. Why fish at all if it disrupts anything a fish does? So long as the fish populations are stable, I see no issue

Spey in a pond?! 9wt works but not ideal, guess I’ve got to find some bigger fish. 100% rather have a 7wt tho

Lol a little light for Texas bass, but wouldnve been fine on this day
I’ve never understood the need to fish for bedding fish. There is zero challenge and you are disrupting the spawn…
