Coming from minivans, I've had a crush on the Telluride for a while and really like the look of the new Palisade. But, I've done enough research to be a little weary of reliability, especially since we tend to beat up our cars. I have high hopes for this Grand Highlander, because our experience with the Sienna (and other Toyotas in the past) has been stellar. Very reliable, no major problems outside of the usual, and they took a beating from kids and aggressive drivers. 😄 If this falls in the same price point as the Kia and Hyundai (and availability isn't crazy), I could see us getting this one. Not as flashy on the outside as the Palisade, but I'm willing to give up some style for substance.
That's one of the worst things about considering any Toyota vehicle. I live in the Dallas area and every dealer here tacks on useless options and other crap. Even if you order it from the factory they will tell you they "have to" add LoJack, nitrogen, window VIN etching, "paint sealant", etc. for several thousand dollars. It's obnoxious and infuriating, like TX Toyota dealers are stuck in the 1980's.
Thank you for this review. We have the Subaru Ascent and keep having low RPM bucking issues with the E-CVT. I am curious how the Toyota Grand Highlander stacks up against the Subie. Mark, you should compare this with the new Honda Pilot and the Nissan Pathfinder , now the GHL truly competes with these two in terms of space and passenger comfort. Ofcourse the popular Kia / Hyundai twins and Atlas too. Toyota finally gave the Highlander that should have been what this is all along. That would be a wonderful comparison.

Great review per usual. Interesting choice in the 3 row SUV segment. Toyota might have a winner. As a former highlander owner, the 3rd row isn’t very usable and smaller overall. Everything else was fine for the segment. My telluride had a very usable 3rd row but daily fuel economy wasn’t great (19-20 mpg for non-highway), plus I thought the ride wasn’t very smooth (5-10 hour road trips). This vehicle might have Telluride practicality with Highlander smoothness. The VW Atlas will become irrelevant in this segment. I’m curious to see if Lexus produces a model on this platform, which could become a far more pragmatic alternative to the X7 or GLS
Any comments on Sienna vs the Grand Highlander? I really like the Grand Highlander and want to get one, but Sienna still have some of the items that would be nice for family. Like the sliding door and cargo space.
If you're starting out with family, you'll want the minivan. The sliding doors and lower entry will be much more useful when you are dealing with car seats and all that. Also, the cargo capacity is pretty great, especially when seats are removed/folded. Not to mention, we have a 12 yo Sienna that we have not been light on and it is still running great.
This is one of those times where the economy version looks better then the luxury counterpart….definitely prefer the look of the Grand Highlander over the TX.

For a new "regular" car, this has one of the best interiors (in terms of layout, material choices and design). Before you jump on me, let me clarify. I know it isn't "premium", that's not what I meant. This new interior has buttons for the things most people want (HVAC, radio, drive controls), large screen(s) for ease of use, nice trim materials with no gloss black and even a few color options for the "leathers". Some new vehicles seem to be over styled just for the sake of doing it, or they are plastered in gloss black (which looks like crap in one month). It looks like anyone could get in this vehicle and either know how to use it right away and if there is a learning curve, it's minimal at best. As much as I dislike the concept of this I actually like the design. It's a more grown up RAV4. They need to migrate it downstream to the Highlander and the Corolla Cross, in my opinion.
This is 3 row SUV. The common use case is NOT twisty roads in Hawaii. It is wide, straight American boulevards that go to Costco. Automotive reviewers need to stop criticizing these vehicles for the scenarios outside the normal use case. I bought my 2017 Highlander watching this kind of crap and thinking sportier suspension was a good thing. Nope, we want SOFT suspension on our highway cruisers. Stop looking for harder suspensions and then later complain about bumps.
Yeah, that's kind of what I'm worried about. I've got a 2011 Sienna with the V6 and love it. Contrast that with the Odyssey we have with the V4, it's a slug. It's nice to have at least some power that's ready to go when working your way into traffic.
Sometimes, not everything has to be the fastest, flashiest, head-turning thing on the road. This is that vehicle you get in your early 40s as your kids are just about in the 6th grade and starting to play scholastic sports. It's the vehicle immediately before the mid-life crisis kicks in.

I have a 21 Highlander with the v6 and it is such a "non-premium" product. The seats are horrible after an hour or two. It shakes, rattles, shifts hard for no reason, hunts for gears at every throttle input, I could go on and on about how cheap, unrefined, and uncomfortable it is. It better last a long time because that is the only thing it might have going for it. I'm done with Toyota. Much like Subaru they are living off a reputation from 20 years ago.

I like all the physical buttons and controls. Hopefully others will "steal" this design. Now that they've made a respectably-sized 3 row SUV, I wish they would take the third row out of the regular Highlander and make it strictly two rows with more cargo capacity.
You don't have to use a third row, and that extra capacity is there... Along with having the third row available for occasional use. But, I get the idea of a Passport-like version that is a dedicated two row, but is still usefully bigger than nicer than a RAV4. Perhaps the next Highlander should be optional third-row like the first-gen was, so if you truly don't want it "under any circumstances" you're not paying extra dollars or weight penalty.
Good video, but I do miss the edgy, sarcastic humor, especially from Mark, that always cracked me up. However, they've gone all corporate now and had to grow up and behave in front of the brands, I guess...
These are the car and driver reviewers. Obsessed with performance details and comparing it to sports cars always. Good to see they noted its use, basically an suv thats like a minivan people hauler thats it. Its not meant to be a road racer.
Hey guys, as normal you’ve completed a thorough, informative, and great review. I’d only ask that when you’re talking about space with seats down or up, you give the actual numbers as well as a reference vehicle if possible. Like saying 61 cubic ft as compared to Suburban with XX cubic feet. Perhaps the Suburban is a stretch, but maybe a segment leader or competitor. Thanks for the level of thought that you put into these reviews regardless.
It should sell well. They didn't go for the semi-lux look of CX-90 or Telluride/Pallisade. They kept it very RAV-4/Highlander like. There's some level of a "deluxe" vehicle, but it's really huge inside and should be reliable. Now, they have to make enough for demand and not charge way over the MSRP.
In the market for a new SUV... I love my Toyota Avalon with its v6... I'm a guy who keeps his vehicles 10+ years and for 150K+ miles... I am a traditionalist I guess, but this turbo 4 ain't gonna go the distance for me... Hello Honda Pilot or even their Passport... they STILL have a traditional, reliable, long term V6... too bad for Toyota...

$50,000 with a 4 cylinder turbo?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yikes!
Fools will still line up to buy this crap. Boring to drive and a sedan or station wagon has just as much space to do it all. 😂
Just get a 10-year finance agreement 🙄
Literally what everyone is complaining about in the new Lexus RX 😭
Get a better job
V6 will be sadly missed
That's true so now only 4runner or cx90
Yeah, that's kind of what I'm worried about. I've got a 2011 Sienna with the V6 and love it. Contrast that with the Odyssey we have with the V4, it's a slug. It's nice to have at least some power that's ready to go when working your way into traffic.
The Apple "PRO MAX ULTRA" is now in cars, HYBRID MAX, lmao what a gimmicky 50,000 product.
Subway has a sandwich above the regular foot long called the foot long pro. No joke. This crap has to end.
With only 26 mpg - no reason to pay more, just get the hybrid version.
Sometimes, not everything has to be the fastest, flashiest, head-turning thing on the road.
This is that vehicle you get in your early 40s as your kids are just about in the 6th grade and starting to play scholastic sports. It's the vehicle immediately before the mid-life crisis kicks in.
40s? Damn.
My midlife crisis came early.
And it came hard.
they just said, "worst body control" it means horrible driving dynamics
It’s also the car you get when you need a family hauler/winter beater to pair with the luxury/sports car.
Tbh having this as a daily then an m4/911 would be a terrific set-up for most folks
@@JohnDoe-my5ip any one who loves cars, loves driving, knows cars, is a car enthusiast would never get a appliance like this. even for daily. it makes life less enjoyable during hours of daily commute. People who love this
Can't wait for the Lexus TX. Hopefully it keeps the physical controls
A Lexus Texas? no way... Alexis Texas.
Everything will be voice command
@@KevZJ Alexis can hold many passengers too
Everything will be in the touchscreen
Look at the interior pics of the TX
Too bad about the body control. My kids get car sick easily. Guess I can skip this.
The rolling body movement on a semi curved road, explained as “a small boat on rougher seas” makes me question the whole thing.
Make sure you hold on to your bullion collection in the corners, Jack.
With the Mazda cx90, I can’t imagine buying this unless you’re a Toyota lemming
I have a 21 Highlander with the v6 and it is such a "non-premium" product. The seats are horrible after an hour or two. It shakes, rattles, shifts hard for no reason, hunts for gears at every throttle input, I could go on and on about how cheap, unrefined, and uncomfortable it is. It better last a long time because that is the only thing it might have going for it. I'm done with Toyota. Much like Subaru they are living off a reputation from 20 years ago.
Nice quick review though looking forward to the in depth review. Is there any plan for the Mazda CX-90 review? Definitely looking forward to your review on that!
Yes, we put it off because our press car was problematic. We have another one in a few weeks and its a deep dive. Like an hour long.
@@savagegeese great. I drove it and really liked it. But 30 minutes of driving it was not enough. Looking forward to your in depth review and see what flaws you'l find. I'm sure there is/are.
GRAND Highlander, wow.
So can they un-bulk the regular Highlander a bit now?
It is about the smallest in its class. Only the three row sorento is smaller.
Nobody can buy these anyway or any ither new Toyota. No inventory..and huge fees and markups on any that come in
Putting an engine designed for the weight of a Toyota Camry in this vehicle is a disaster waiting to happen.
Toyota has already been making a vehicle more family-friendly than the Highlander. It's called the Sienna.
My wifes boyfriend is gonna be PISSED when he finds out I got a Prius over the Highlander 😰
Cuckold ayy
Well you're smart for it
Does the grand highlander reclassify the Highlander vs the sorento?
The Death of V6 means death of the smoother refined experience of driving and reliability.
Not really. This isn't 1983.
