    combat strategy:
    the drunken style teaches unpredictability and "ambush" tactics, which are specially used in hard or losing situations:
    tactic 33 - "be wise, play dumb (假痴不癫)": pretend abnormality, like being off-balance, etc., to deceive the opponent.
    tactic 34 - "self-infliction tactic (苦肉计)": pretend injuries to delude the opponent, making him underestimate and loosen guard.
    tactic 35 - "toss a brick, take gem (抛砖引玉)": expose part of your body as bait to lure the opponent into an ambush.
    tactic 36 - "sowing discord tactic (反间计)": abnormal moves from unlikely angles confuse the opponent.
    Shaolin drunken style follows no standard and, unlike other Shaolin styles, doesn't have a standard form. this is why people have different drunken forms.
    in hard fights when you are losing, you often get into awkward situations with no normal way of attack or defense. in this style, you intentionally ambush in awkward positions to persuade the opponent open guard for your moves which go to unlikely angles. these teach you how to be unpredictable and turn lost situations into winning maneuvers.

    history:
    Tang dynasty (618-907):
    at the beginning of the dynasty, in 621 AD, 13 monks from Shaolin temple intervened prominently in a war to help the new dynasty. Li Shimin (李世民), son of the new emperor and the commander of the Tang army, appreciated it and endowed the monks with officialdom, land, and wealth, and came to Shaolin temple in ceremony of the victory, and gifted the monks with the permission to disavow the Buddhist rule of not consuming meat and wine. monk Zhi Shou (智守), one of the 13 monks, had a prior interest in wine before becoming a monk and is said to had been able to drink 5 catties of wine in one breath. following the permission, he grabbed a jar and drank a huge amount of wine. monks blamed him, but fully intoxicated, he challenged the monks in disorder with his staff and then bare hand when disarmed, and could defy a vary large group of monks. the abbot praised this 'drunken style' and it was adopted, refined, and inherited over generations. because of their Buddhist vows, monks did not standardize this style, but most lineages of the monks developed their own drunken form and kept it as their hidden advanced style.
    __________________
    note: there are various other drunken forms and styles in Chinese kung fu, and they are different from Shaolin zui han quan. most of them are based on imitating the Daoist tale of the 8 drunken immortals, while Shaolin zui han quan is based on the Buddhist character of a drunken luohan. though technically similar, these are different styles.

    The deceptive speed and accuracy of this style is most likely what makes it quite effective. Letting your opponent underestimate you and the force you're capable of, while looking drunk.

    some of you need to understand that not every thing in this world is about MMA styles and brawn. If you want to develop as a fighter let alone a warrior, learn to see beyond the horizon. the taoulu is to be practiced and then discovered. Keep in mind that the Shaolin monks have fought countless battles to the death while MMA brawlers have been at their games for 20 or so years. Keep in mind that UFC matches are under strict rules as well.

    As a fellow martial artist practisioner, i dont really understand the usefulness of these moves, you seem to make the head a really easy target by 'waving' it forward and not really protecting it with anything, but i dont really know enough to make conclusions. Seems fun anyways.

    • @anthonymercuri8885
      @anthonymercuri8885 8 років тому

      +Infrapuna Maybe that's the point, to draw them into attacking your head, then you just fall over (so their hit misses) and do something from that position?

    • @DiddyBohlen
      @DiddyBohlen 8 років тому

      +Infrapuna Yes it is quite risky but it heavily relies on confusion and unpredictable moves. Also quite hard to learn. I guess speaking about a real fight this could be useful against an opponent moving at a similar paste but not against something aggressive and sudden. The head is a common hitting spot. If you look at some other videos even more advanced users get hit in the head.

    • @ShaolinKungFuInstructional
      @ShaolinKungFuInstructional  8 років тому +15

      +Infrapuna if somebody has an ordinary, weak head, yes, they should reasonably keep it back. but you should keep in mind that in some schools of kung fu, especially in shaolin kung fu, the front, top, and the sides of the head are trained and hardened as a mean of attack and defense. you've seen videos of kung fu practitioners breaking bricks with or on their heads. so, the head, just like the arms and legs, is powerful and is actually used in combat. the back of the head is also trained, but it's more vulnerable and is rarely used as a mean of attack. amituofo! _/\_

    • @HowieHellbent
      @HowieHellbent 8 років тому +1

      +Infrapuna It is about deception. The martial artist pretends to be drunk so nobody takes them seriously.
      The drunken motions actually protect more than it might seem at first, and they also aid in attacks by using the intertia as momentum instead of other forms which would use more muscle power.
      it is like using your body as the force behind the fist instead of your arm.
      And when nobody is taking you seriously, they won't attack you with as much vigor as they would a more serious-looking practitioner.

They start their training from 6, the bacon finger holes in sheet metal, they use their fingers to drill 6 mm holes in trees.
