What a nice movie ! They sure can't put out like this no more ! The classic are the greatest , men were men ,and Ladies were Ladies ! Awesome part of history !
Thank you for this delightful movie! How nice it would be to live in simpler times, and when movies were made without the garbage that Hollywood puts out now
Sonja's main squeeze at the college is Richard Greene, an Englishman playing American who was being built up as a light leading man on Robert Taylor/Don Ameche lines. World War Two interrupted his movie career, but Americans warmed to him almost 20 years later as Robin Hood in the first British television series exported successfully to US prime time.
A different generation and a different america and you can see it in this wonderful movie. These people suffered thorough a great depression and a world war in their near future. Now its 20 dollars to see a movie but 40 dollars for the buttered popcorn.
I have several black & White glossy pictures 8"x10" of Sonja Henie an Cesar Romero an Tyrone Power an other Actors. That Sonja gave me back in 1955. I have made color display boards 4'x4' an gave some of them to my past students. Still have all the originals. They are awesome.
@@ilahildasissac1943 I am sure that movies were a great escape during those awful times. Being an old movie buff I am absolutely thrilled to have been able this year to watch 374 old movies, with only a handful being repeat viewings for myself.
Love the transition from the Cisco Kid to a wacky New Yorker (I started with Cesar Romero's earliest films available on UA-cam). Romero, Heinie, Greene, Greenwood and Treacher all adorable. And the horse-drawn taxicab. THANKS!
Romero always wore his suits with extreme elegance. Notice his appearance while addressing his father's colleagues and recommending a novel way to advertise a product. That elegance transferred into a fluid dance motion equal to that of Astaire and Jack Buchanan.
Cesar started acting circa 1935....He also had a tv series in 1954 called Passport to Danger....in the mid 60s, Batman.....and later was on Falcon Crest.....thanks for watching!
If I'm not mistaken, Romero also did film work in England. Whatever. What I remember him best for is his dancing. Very elegant, suave, and smooth. The Fred Astaire of Latin America.
Малышка была знаменита, талантлива,дала людям счастье на многие времена, хотя бы фильмом "Серенада Солнечной долины",и не познала увядания, различных болей в организме, какое счастье!
Buddy Ebsen was an amazing dancer....he was to be the Tin Man in Wizard of Oz but had a bad reaction to the paint.....check him out with Shirley Temple
$50,000 would be equal to a couple of millions now. Then again, I'm poor gal, 50 grand is nothing to sneeze at now. That's a cool department store to have an ice rink in it.
Joan Davis, as well as deadpan Virginia O'Brien (was she an influence on both Cher and Keely Smith?), was one of my all time favorite comediennes (I honestly believe, Abi, that only a woman can do comedy: Judy Holiday, Carol Burnett, Lucille Ball and Vivian Vance, Marie Dressler, Judy Canova -- I could go on). But back to Greenwood. I always looked for her as a kid when I plunked by my 15 cents for admission to my babysitter, the movies. I put "Sing to Your Senorita" in Favorites. Love the way she did it.
+Abi Sheldon ....Charlotte Greenwood however did co star with Cesar Romero in 2 other movies......Springtime in the Rockies & Tall Dark and Handsome.....
I love Greenwood, who steals every scene in every movie she's in. Did you know an excellent biography of her came out in 2007? You can find it on Amazon and Ebay, but if the prices are too high for you, see if your local library has an inter-library loan program that gets books from all over. You might have to pay for postage, but I guarantee you'll love the book.
The screenplay's construction is weird. Cesar dominates the first reel, then vanishes for half an hour. We get only a glimpse of Sonja on the rink until halfway, delayed by an overlong extended bit from Billy Gilbert and a sappy hayride singalong. Henie fans must have been squirming with impatience.
Enjoyed this mindless College musical. While I know it's a Sonja Heine star vehicle....I just love that Joan...funny as hell in her loud Ozarak Hills way. Honeychile Wilder is mean as hell----what a Karen. Never made it in Hollywood but has a reputation as Cafe Society gladfly.
A great skater does not necessarily mean a great actress. And this movie. I guess that people were easily pleased in 1938. And Gypsy Rose Lee doesn't even strip. Her acting ability reinforces the line from "Gypsy", "Hey Gyps! Show us your talent!"
Must have been strange making this movie. Caesar was Tyrone Power's Number One Guy his whole life and Sonja almost married Tyrone. Caesar was considered the best escort - and dancer, in the social life of Hollywood. But never, never, was he a "lady's man". Beautiful man nevertheless. Also a darned good actor.
Hey, nonbinary genderfluidity at 34:00. Plymouth U was 80 years ahead of its time. The little one looks as if they had almost finished zir transition. The setting burlesques Dartmouth's famous Winter Carnival, soon to be a movie of that name with Ann Sheridan.

I sure Love this movie. The very best of all time!!
In the days of musicals this was very entertaining! I recognized some old faces that were young at the time.
I enjoyed it so much I hated to see it end !
What a nice movie ! They sure can't put out like this no more ! The classic are the greatest , men were men ,and Ladies were Ladies ! Awesome part of history !
You said it sister 😉

I loved this movie. I have Cesar Romero's and Buddy Ebsen's autographs. Two of my favourite actors.
Wife Divine wow your lucky
What a completely beautiful man Cesar Romero was My goodness I can't get over it Tall dark handsome and totally talented
No hope for Donald Pleasence,then?

John Whitten wow I wish I could have those for real
What a treasure !
Very charming. Thanks for the share Cesar Romero was a sweetheart, was loved by his pals in Hollywood.
Waddya Tawkin I heard he was a real Ladies Man that true
@@dianelangley6478 He was gay.
Yes they were the best .❤
A pleasant afternoon movie.
I ❤her clothes.and his and theirs😮😅
This is a delightful piece of fluff. A great cast makes this a great way to escape reality. Thanks for sharing!
Art Roraback Halo set it beautiful it is an excellent way to escape reality is correct that's what I'm trying to do now really
I can imagine during the Depression, it brought great relief.

Buddy Ebsen almost got the Tin man part a year later on "The Wizard of Oz".
Sonja Henie was the Ice skating champion for at least 14 or 15 championships, both in the USA and in Norway. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🕺🕺🕺🕺
You are the best ❤️💞😊 in the world 🌍🌍 thankful 💘
Love the transition from the Cisco Kid to a wacky New Yorker (I started with Cesar Romero's earliest films available on UA-cam). Romero, Heinie, Greene, Greenwood and Treacher all adorable. And the horse-drawn taxicab. THANKS!
Richard green was so fine I could watch him in anything and wish I could've met all of them

This is wonderful! Thanks for sharing. Gosh, Cesar Romero went back to 1938. Then he played the Joker in the Batman TV series years later.
Cesar started acting circa 1935....He also had a tv series in 1954 called Passport to Danger....in the mid 60s, Batman.....and later was on Falcon Crest.....thanks for watching!
Oh? Didn't know about his TV series. He had a long career. Must have been easy to work with.
Roger Wilco The late by suicide Carole Landis spoke warmly of him.
He did it all, from lover to singer to tough guys much later in life. Must have been easy to work with to keep getting roles.
If I'm not mistaken, Romero also did film work in England. Whatever. What I remember him best for is his dancing. Very elegant, suave, and smooth. The Fred Astaire of Latin America.
Mr Romero is comical..T Y for this film...
Funny to the fullest!!!
The actress who played Mary played a secretary in a movie with Linda Darnell and Tyrone Power.
Ila Hilda Sissac: Oh, yes! The actress was Joan Davis, an excellent comedian. And the movie is "Day time wife" (1939). I love it! Cheers! :)
Jed Clampet, taxi driver. 1938.
Same year Superman landed in the comics.
Малышка была знаменита, талантлива,дала людям счастье на многие времена, хотя бы фильмом "Серенада Солнечной долины",и не познала увядания, различных болей в организме, какое счастье!
delightful!!!!!
Joan Davis was one of my favorite comediennes of that era: Jeff Donnell, Miss Vera Vague, Virginia O'Brien, Betty Garrett, and Judy Canova.
Jay Young where have I seen Betty Garrett I can't remember can you tell me what she is famous for
@@dianelangley6478 The cab driver in On the town.
Yes, I would agree...and Joan shares the same qualities of the comedians you list...O'Brien and Canova in particular.
Fun movie
Thanks for posting!
WONNN~DERRR~FULLL 😍
He was fine as wine👏🏽
The Queen of Ice, becoming a movie skating with just ice skating ⛸️
Hey--Buddy Ebsen, too. What a treat--didn't know he danced!
Buddy Ebsen was an amazing dancer....he was to be the Tin Man in Wizard of Oz but had a bad reaction to the paint.....check him out with Shirley Temple
check out Captain January w/Shirley Temple and one of the Broadway Melodies-maybe 1938 and there are lots more; Buddy's dancing is a joy!
Abi Sheldon are you kidding he's very well known for dancing in a lot of films look it up
@@dianelangley6478 i know this to be Very true because I've seen those movies
He danced in the Beverley hillbillies, too!
Granted, not like here.
Sang, too
Whittled, … lol
Babe Ruth's girl Gypsy Rose Lee. Never knew she was in a movie until now
Henike did the splits for everyone in Hollywood
Jempolan !!!

Joan Davis 'Was that you or the horse?'
Oops--not Greenwood. The limber comedienne is Joan Davis.
Abi Sheldon Not Charlotte Greenwood?
Jay Young
right. I had Charlotte Greenwood in my head, but not the right context.
P. U. University and F. U. University classicly funny
Sonja Henie sur Glace toujours aussi bien, même si le film est un peu trop bavard.
The screenplay's construction is weird. Cesar dominates the first reel, then vanishes for half an hour. Oh for heaven's sake, somebody colorize this movie!☺!
Buddy was old back den
That was cruel to mock her like that.
I'D BE SO THANKFUL TO GOD THAT I FOUND A GIRL, LIKE SONYA , WHO LIKED TO WEAR CLOTHES....PWW
Buddy Ebsen was a dancer, actor in those days.
It's hard to believe he was gay!
César Romero? Not him too 🤔🙁
A great skater does not necessarily mean a great actress. And this movie. I guess that people were easily pleased in 1938. And Gypsy Rose Lee doesn't even strip. Her acting ability reinforces the line from "Gypsy", "Hey Gyps! Show us your talent!"

Cesar always kept them guessing. A smart guy, and a breezy presence punching up so many routine movies.
That owner or waiter is rude as hell. I would eat somewhere else. Did most colleges have sweet shoppes back then? Was the professor Don Ameche?
58 mins He's wearing a wig!
Billy Gilbert the waiter!
