I'm a big MK fan, but yeah the animations look completely flat. They've made incremental improvements, but they haven't made the leap we were all hoping for. It looks out of place with the high quality character models & presentation. You're spot on on the music. The Midway period wasn't perfect (especially the 3D era), but you could always count on the music being great. I don't understand Netherrealm's obsession with muted cinematic background noise. Very well done video explaining the Animation issues of MK1. Sometimes we can't say exactly why something is and looks bad or not well done but you explained and showed it perfectly. Keep up the good work bro!
It felt like the downsizing started with Injustice 2 when the big bodies were either cut or made smaller. It was especially noticeable when Darkseid was added.
About music - even Them Fighin' Herds (fighting with Ponies) have more dynamic music. It also combination of both character themes and progressing through match.
I’m regards of the music, I genuinely like Tomb of the Dragon king and The Pyramid. They were my personal stand outs just on the atmosphere the tracks bring.
YES, with the Big Bodies, little impact point. Characters in MK1 seem so scrawny compared to MK11. Let it be known that MK11 also had different their own character placements to make them feel more bigger on screen as well as have them compensate for different gameplay mechanics, but a lot of the male characters felt HUGE. They were muscled tf out from so much kombat. I can understand that perhaps all the kombatants in this new era are younger than previous games, but when even Goro looks so tiny, it just loses character impact.
Mk1 focuses more on the realistic aspect of things. You can't be deadass saying mk1 male characters look "scrawny" or not muscular when I bet my head that they all have 10 times better physique than u can ever achieve lmao
So you're telling me that MK1 could have had music from Mick Gordon?! THE SAME GUY WHO COMPOSED THE OST FOR KILLER INSTINCT 2013?! Don't get me wrong, Casey Edward's still makes good music, but Mick Gordon makes music that makes me want to fight. I listen to Killer Instinct's music all the time during workouts. Tiger Warrior and Back To Rise are some of my favorite workout songs of all time. And Mick Gordon's music could've fit better with Mortal Kombat. Other fighting games do this really well. Victor's theme and Jin's classic theme are the type of music that I love for a fighting game like Tekken. It's both fun and aggressive, which fits the tone for Tekken. When it comes to Street Fighter, my favorite tracks are Konig Oder (Ed's theme) and Genbu Temple theme. These songs are perfect for Street fighter, it starts kinda slow which fits the very strategic neutral and footsies game of Street Fighter, but as the song progresses, the speed of the beats seems like it increases to fit the fast and flashy combos, and the tension you get when you're low on health and waiting for an opportunity to use your critical art. Killer Instinct and Guilty Gear are totally different beasts. Each theme fits the character and all of them encourage you to become aggressive as hell. For Killer Instinct's music, the music is always aggressive because you always have to focus on Killer Instinct to get the right timing for combo breakers and counter breakers. In Guilty Gear, you always have to be aggressive or else your super meter will go down. Each of these game's music fit very well with the mechanics and the tone of their games. Mortal Kombat 1 in the other hand, it's just kinda generic. And the audio mixing is pretty bad too, so it just makes it worse.
Unfortunately as awesome as that would have been, NRS telling him no for MK11 was the point of no return. Mick's Music for K.i and Doom is friggin HYPE. A pity it is unlikely to ever appear in any MK game at this point.
For the music section you could even use tracks from mk9 as examples. The forge and subway are still goated mk tracks imo. I don't think mk1 has bad music by any stretch, and I even think you missed some high energy ones like the pyramid, but the mk9 forge song just slaps.
I actually wanted to use those yes. But they got korrupted during editing. Forge is one of my faves as well as Goro's Lair. The Pyramid. Well the reason I didn't include it is because I forgot it. and I hear it a lot in Arcade but still Forget it!
@@MaoriGamerDood that's a shame, wouldn't have minded hearing them again. In fact, I might just go listen to the mk9 soundtrack right now! I mean even the character select screen theme is good, but go back to deadly alliance. That shit goes so hard.

i have not been buying NRS games because they literally refuse to improve their weakest links. I feel bored playing the games, and then get annoyed when i look closer. And it isn't even like i don't wanna be a fan! I do!
The music in mk needs to be louder by default which is crazy as during the beta a complaint was the music was too low and they had to turn it up and it's still soft. Playing Mk1 with headphones on is definitely a better experience imo even with the certain boring tracks. I dont understand why in every other game the default settings allow you to here the music whether calm or not. For example I have no problem hearing Dj's theme or his stage theme in Sf6 yet they are the calmest themes but whatevs. Only talking about the music because I couldn't care less about the animation lol. Understood your points though.
SF6 is so fun to watch... I can sit and watch for hours. I gave MK1 a try and it was so stiff and boring. Thats not how people react when hit and that's not how stiff martial arts look like... thanks for the video.
It’s kinda annoying that people will say this is nitpicking too since it actually is holding back the gameplay in the footsies department. They feel that because the fatal blow animations and fatalities are the best looking supers and finishers in fighting games that NRS should just get a pass. But the thing is giving them a pass has started to affect the finishers. Notice the brutalities are just way lower quality. Most of them are worse thank mkx, the game they were introduced in. It’s not even them trying to tone down the violence because the fatalities are the goriest they’ve ever been. And honestly, imo mk1 doesn’t really look like a next gen game. It feels like peak last gen. The animation also does affect the gameplay. If the characters had proper animations they would be forced to have extra frames on certain moves. Like the pokes.if this really is art style then it’s a very inconsistent art style.
Very well said. The overall game is inconsistent in many areas. Gore may be a staple part of the Franchise. But the Karachters are Also a staple of this Series. The Karachters are supposed to make the Fatalities and Brutalities awesome. Not the other way around
Really good video, MK animations continuing to have these problems makes me really sad for its players, especially when stuff like the "low" kick looks like it hits mid, which can mess with people pretty hard if they aren't used to it. 18:02 It makes more sense to aim higher because then you will be aiming at the knee, which is weaker and more critical. Aiming down will hit the shin. I don't know if you knew this but in real life there's a way of training called "Iron Shins" that involves kicking and grinding your shin bones so they can heal back tougher than stone, the same training cannot be done for the knees because they are complicated joints. I've never seen a fighting game character that trained like this, some games are probably not even aware of it (Faust overdrive in Guilty Gears Strive).
I'm aware of that. I used White Oak on my Shins. However. These characters are aiming at the Thigh slightly above the knee. The hit sparks are around the knee area but the kick isn't which annoys me. Also in the case of SHAO that's even worse because that's an Earth realm Training method and he HATES Earth realm.

Hardcore MK fan here: i feel this is valid criticism that NRS should take as input to improve. On the other hand, imo the criticism is a bit overblown in the more recent titles and the execution of some animations may come down to personal preference. Like MK has a history of having the worst low poke animations in the industry that still find their way into latest games, 100%. As I played SF, GG andTekken past year I see stuff that just looks goofy but other people might like it for what it is. I love SF’s Chun Li’s and AKI’s movement down to every button but Guile and DJ have some moves that just look ugly. I’ll never enjoy playing DJ just because his machinegun punches look so unbearably jank to me. MK tends to undersell their keyposes, GG overdoes it on some of their characters to the point it gets kinda cringe imo. Love Potemkin though MK undersells the impact on their buttons where Tekken drives home that that hard-hitting feeling. On the other hand, it makes character feel less human because jabs and kicks are almost gunshots. Maybe not everyone is into that but others love that. Case in point, in GG’s art style, Potemkin’s hits feel less rigid and robot-like than characters throwing punches in Tekken, and he’s a giant dude in a metal armor suit As for MK, i like the VFX on a lot of the special moves and they sell the speed of rapid-fire punches the best when playing someone like Liu Kang or Kung Lao. ( Sorry Deejay but this aint it )
It's one of the reasons I could never get into MK. It's just not appealing to the eyes, and a lot of the hits lack follow through. The animations are more akin to what I'd imagine a child with their action figures would do with the characters.
@MaoriGamerDood My favorite one is when people forget the point of fighting games being works of fiction and are like,"HURP DERP Tekken isn't realistic and MK IS! Checkmate owned!!1" ...Yes, combat sports IRL don't involve Electric Wind God Fists and Hurricane Kicks, but they also aren't striking stiff poses and flaccidly slapping one another in the kneecaps with their best negative I-Frame footsies 🤣....Not to mention, you know, throwing demonic rope spears and ice balls? 😆 🤣
Im Player mk1 of super Nintendo ist Play this game but my Reaktion is 😢 this is injustis Animation all Players is morping in mortal komat or injust injustis this is a fusion wichtig mk and i justiz
Couldnt disagree with this more. SF has cartoony animation. MK's foundation is based in actual martial arts movement, especially in MK1. I dont enjoy the animation of MKX very much tho. It's all preference at the end of the day.
@@atrfan11 If you disagree. That's no problem. But, all fighting games use Actual martial arts as a base. The most realistic one today is Still Virtua Fighter. The issue with MK as a whole is a Lack of exaggeration. Karachters seem very lethargic compared to other games. As I said in the beginning. It's not about realism. It's about being sold on the illusion. That's why I gave MK9 and MKX a pass kause they have exaggeration and flair in their janky movements. But yeah it's a matter of perspective.
@@AtomicGT55 I won't claim to know everything about martial arts. However, I do know someone who has a lengthy background in it, and he spoke highly of MK11 and MK1's animation. I think the other fighters look cool, but I do prefer the recent MK animation. Just me tho, man.

After watching ADIs video i thought "no way they keep this crap for MK1" and to be fair the animation in general IS better... but that doesn't mean it is good now, i don't get how a huge developer with so much money can have animation this poor for decades.
Dude i'm really digging yout latter videos, subscribed a little while back so please don't take this the wrong way, i say it because i like your content. Get a pop filter my man, it'll improve your audio a lot and they're like 10 bucks.
No offence taken. Thank you for watching and I shall look for the filter now that I have time
The animations became questionable to me starting for MK11 and it's so much worse in MK1
Sadly some aspects of the animation are a step back.
Hardcore MK fan here:
i feel this is valid criticism that NRS should take as input to improve.
Love Potemkin though
MK undersells the impact on their buttons where Tekken drives home that that hard-hitting feeling. On the other hand, it makes character feel less human because jabs and kicks are almost gunshots. Maybe not everyone is into that but others love that.
Case in point, in GG’s art style, Potemkin’s hits feel less rigid and robot-like than characters throwing punches in Tekken, and he’s a giant dude in a metal armor suit
As for MK, i like the VFX on a lot of the special moves and they sell the speed of rapid-fire punches the best when playing someone like Liu Kang or Kung Lao. ( Sorry Deejay but this aint it )
I Appreciate the input. Thanks.
Nah, mk animations are garbage.
MK1 animates better than any of the previous games as 11:40 shows
Yes!! I love my MK1!!🤟😎
👍🏽👍🏽
🤜🔥🤛
All the added tunes did nothing for me.
Sugarpunch warned us about this crap.
It's one of the reasons I could never get into MK. It's just not appealing to the eyes, and a lot of the hits lack follow through. The animations are more akin to what I'd imagine a child with their action figures would do with the characters.
I've recently heard people refer to MK animations as "action figure normals." That is highly accurate.
It actually amazes me the lengths people will go to defend NRS's shitty animation 🤣
I know right?
@MaoriGamerDood My favorite one is when people forget the point of fighting games being works of fiction and are like,"HURP DERP Tekken isn't realistic and MK IS! Checkmate owned!!1" ...Yes, combat sports IRL don't involve Electric Wind God Fists and Hurricane Kicks, but they also aren't striking stiff poses and flaccidly slapping one another in the kneecaps with their best negative I-Frame footsies 🤣....Not to mention, you know, throwing demonic rope spears and ice balls? 😆 🤣
@@pixelgoat7317 Sorcerer's, Four arm Monsters, Demon Ladies, The list goes on 😂
Im Player mk1 of super Nintendo ist Play this game but my Reaktion is 😢 this is injustis Animation all Players is morping in mortal komat or injust injustis this is a fusion wichtig mk and i justiz
Damn didn't realize that real martial arts were about stiff and impractical movements with no weight at all
@@AtomicGT55 I won't claim to know everything about martial arts. However, I do know someone who has a lengthy background in it, and he spoke highly of MK11 and MK1's animation. I think the other fighters look cool, but I do prefer the recent MK animation. Just me tho, man.
@@AtomicGT55 Most martial arts are impractical in a real brawl fight. MMA already proved this.
omg yall nitpicky af! at least can see it’s happening. tekken has so much going on between sounds, characters constantly making noises, stage breaks, animations, etc u get a migraine after 3 matches.
Mk is ass
