@@intothewoods_dave The reason that Eileen Heckart did not win best supporting for the Bad Seed was that the votes were split between she and and the movie's mega child star Patty McCormack (age 10 at the time) - The same can be said for why Patty McCormack didn't win for The Bad Seed. We'll never know who had more votes, but word is that Patty was the one who beat the split. This is why having two nominees from the same film can mess up the actor's chances.

This was one of the most deserved Oscars in history. In the film, her sarcastic deadpan readings were hilarious. Two best quotes: when Goldie Hawn says she's an actress, the mother says" might I have seen you in something besides your underwear?" And when Goldie Hawn says that no one could call her a prude, the way the mother says" I'd like to see them try" is brilliant.

What a terrific actress. Eileen Heckart actually deserved to win years earlier for The Bad Seed in which she not only did one (make that two) of the greatest drunk scenes of all time, but somehow managed to draw a few laughs, while playing the mother of a murdered child, without appearing tasteless. Not many can pull that off. I wanted Susan Tyrell of Fat City to win (guess I like drunks), but Heckart was also memorable in Butterflies Are Free, better than anything else in the movie, frankly.

The moment: Robert Duvall and Cloris Leachman were onstage to read the nominees in the best supporting actress category. Leachman announced the nomination of "Susan Tyrrell in 'Fat City,' " and then Duvall said, "Shelley Winters . . ." and got an attack of the giggles that made it difficult for him to get out the words "in 'The Poseidon Adventure.' " Thus, in addition to the stress of waiting to hear whether she won the award -- she didn't -- Winters had to endure the horror of seeing the very fact of her nomination scorned before an audience of millions. That her name was read after the title "Fat City" only made matters worse, turning a moment of possible triumph into a fat joke.
Later that night, Duvall explained to the press that he was not laughing at Winters but because James Caan, his co-star in "The Godfather," had been making funny faces. If this was small comfort, at least Winters could find solace after Duvall, also nominated in the supporting category, also went home a loser.

I SO agree, WARDMAN3!!!! I just saw that movie yesterday for the first time and I was astounded with her performance!! It is what made me come looking for more info on her. Just saw her tonight in Zandy's Bride from 1973. I've seen her over the years in a lot of things but I'm most impressed with her in The Bad Seed. Feel like I want to see all her movies now!!

It was her second, haha. But Heckart is a marvelous actress, and deserved a few more than just 2. In 1956 alone, she co-starred opposite Marilyn Monroe in Bus Stop and Paul Newman in Somebody Up There Likes Me, in addition to her Golden Globe-winning/Oscar-nominated turn in The Bad Seed, where she made her mark first. Not only that, but I believe she's one of several people to have won an Oscar for recreating their Tony-winning role, for Butterflies Are Free. Love her!

Your Mom was a great actress and I believe this was her fifth or perhaps sixth Oscar nomination. She was wonderful and the critics were pretty much tied between Ms.Heckart and Jeannie Berlin, imo these were the two best. Geraldine Page is one of my favorite actresses but she should've won in '62 for "Sweet Bird of Youth" and of course won a dozen or so year's after your lovely Mom did for "Trip to Bountiful"'85. I hope your Mom got some other good parts after this&was happy, seems very nice!!

I was stunned by that, too, and feel bad for Duvall having that happen live on air. Silly Caan, but boys will be boys. Poor Winters probably mistook it as a guffaw against her being nominated in a disaster flick. Nevertheless, back to your mother, who is a tremendous talent. The first time I saw her was in The First Wives' Club, and she endeared me right then and there, as a pre-teen.
