- The Fieldfare (Turdus pilaris) is a migratory thrush native to Europe and Asia. It is a medium-sized bird, measuring about 25-27 cm in length, with a wingspan of 39-42 cm. The Fieldfare is easily recognizable by its gray head, nape, and rump, contrasting with a brown back and a distinctive, speckled breast.
Fieldfares breed in the northern regions of Europe and western Asia, migrating southward to milder climates in the winter, often reaching as far as North Africa, southern Europe, and the Middle East. They are social birds, often seen in large flocks, particularly during the winter months when they forage on berries, fruits, and insects.
Fieldfares are known for their noisy, chattering calls, especially when disturbed. They often defend their nests aggressively from predators by mobbing them and even defecating on them.
