Each school at Columbia still has a graduation ceremony. They only cancelled the "campus wide" ceremony.
In the old days, students and faculty wore cap and gown all semester long, and all the lectures were in Latin. If you were from a noble family, you got to wear a cap with a gold tassel. Loud protests were never allowed.

It’s hard to expect athletes to take that type of a stand especially in the NIL era where football crazed southern schools are offering six and seven figure deals to sign. I would love for athletes and black ppl with influence in general to lead a collective movement against racist institutions, but I also understand the factors that make this difficult.

Just an idle question, was the woman who was being heckled a student of Ole Miss or an outside / non-student agitator? Not that that justifies crude racial remarks, but at the same time if she is a paid agitator my sympathies are far more muted. Graduation ceremonies should never be interrupted by anyone, because they do mean a lot to a lot of people, but frankly -- these are not for adults. They're for kids. I never went to one after high school.

As a grad student who had my first year in virtual class due to the Pandemic and now my commencement being threatened, I'm quite insulted that I paid for commencement and now it is threatened because a few LARPers want to be the main character.
