Moving to Unreal will allow them to get more bang from those 18mo contracts, but it won't let them move forward. If anything, some upper manager will view the engine change as an excuse to get more complacent, and the net effect will be that nothing will change. Man, it is such a bummer though that yet another engine is being retired for Unreal. Part of what makes a game's visual identity stand out is the specific engine that was tailor-made to realize an art direction.
Thief used the Dark Engine, Half Life 2 used Source, Doom 3 used idTech; all these games had such a unique aesthetic that you could see their DNA in other games that use the same engines.
Sonic Team was brought up in the video, and I think they're a really prime example of what I'm thinking of. I remember when Frontiers came up, and there came up all this discussion that Sonic Team should just abandon the Hedgehog engine due to the technical problems that game had. Now Sonic X Shadow Generations is coming out, is looking far more polished, and what's more is that you can tell it's still using the Hedgehog Engine.
I just don't know. I remember a time in the game's industry where a new game engine was something really exciting, and now more and more developers switching to Unreal is a symptom of a shift to something much more stale, impersonal, and corporate.

“Come work for us we aren’t using that dinky old Tiger/Blam engine anymore.” is the vibe I got.
While that helps one specific problem, it doesn’t necessarily ease my apprehension to 343 after Infinite. What is REALLY gonna stop them from making *another* Halo Infinite? When are we going to get a fully fledged, complete, out of the box, Halo game that doesn’t have a dozen disclaimers?
Are we just chasing trends again - what with the all but confirmed CE Remake - or are we actually moving forward with a plan?

Didn't even feel like I was Master Chef anymore, 343 really dropped the ball on that one, and that's why I didn't even try Halo 5 and Infinite. There's nothing to be excited about until they release a Halo game that actually lives up to what Bungie accomplished, 343 has yet to do that, and an engine change isn't enough to convince me that anything will change. They don't have the experience nor institutional knowledge from previous games, they have to develop as a team and probably make a lot of mistakes again to learn and grow as a studio... so their contracts end and they have leave while the studio loses all that experience once again and have to start over again.

    Unreal 5 pretty much kills:
    * Forge Modes (They'll have to make a game with a side game of making games, where in Blam engine it was right there)
    * Replays (The data replays that you can use in Unreal 5 will be hard to make, precise retelling of evenst and physics might result in problems in the replays such as 5 gb replays size).
    * File Share (cant see it happenign with some funny RCE bug that the Unreal team will need to patch, not Halo Studios team will be able to).
BUT, i'm still hopefull even after that because...
That means if the Halo studios can put out some Halo games on Unreal while properly hiring engineers to fix and upgrade Blam engine, then we gaming! How can a company like Microsoft justify not having full teams that are in house that are fully funded to make the games that they are trying to push now that they've given up on the console?

Having a personal engine to fit the game's vision and needs was one thing that the older Halo games unique, especially with their physics. They can't do this anymore because they aren't a consistent development team, always outsourcing and contracting.
It's probably for the better, even though it's a little disapointing

Doubt started immediately when they said that halo at its beginning was a graphic showcase, like what? Halo was pretty much everything from grpahics, gameplay, artstyle, music and was one of the rare fps for console. AND it literally created xbox by being the greatest game of the year.

It is crazy that 343 Industries and Xbox Live Gold is dead around the same time due to rebranding. As we all know everything that isn’t Microsoft Office isn’t going to get any real effort put into it.
I feel like we are getting to a point where every single AAA developer is basically all working in one monopolized engine. I’m just glad that whatever engine it is it won’t be Unity because everyone who touches that gets screwed over.

Well, everything I typed was just a bad joke but yeah Windows 10/11s Xbox desktop app has been awesome. That being said: Games for Windows Live was a mistake.
20 Years has passed and every company still pretends that nobody will own *All of PC Gaming* one day although Valve pretends, they already have. I love Steam but launchers will simply be the thing of the past as DRM will be pre-programmed each game we own directly from the publisher.

With managment changes and technical debt issues gone, this could be a start of a new era for halo but we've been here before. Its really difficult to care for a series that has had 12 years of blunders.

There will be a massive influx of mods. It's also an opportunity for getting experienced UE users.
    Think about this.
There's people who have played Halo that are proficient in UE. They are best suited for this.
They know Chief and Cortana. (I'm still put off by how Cortana was written after Halo 3/Reach).
It's another chance to have a Helldivers Halo. The one that was rejected years ago. Play an ODST or Marine in the franchise and fight The Banished, Covenant, Flood or Forerunners. Or play any of the other races within other factions.
Choose based on faction to race or race to faction.
I think this would be great to do.
But in the meantime you can play and mod Operation Harsh Doorstop.

Havok engine is already working on UE5 and was shown off about 5 months ago. The one thing I can guess is they are using those tools on the future game to keep the feel more in line with Bungie era.

Actions speak louder than words. I'll wait and see if this new studio is the change we needed, or just a rebranding to try and decieve us into thinking they've changed, when they haven't.
They had over a decade to make a good Halo game. Over a decade. And they still didn't deliver. This new studio damn well had better do good by us gamers, else I'm just never buying Halo again, I'll stick to MCC.

It's not just an Xbox studios thing. AAA game development is massively dependant on contractors. Thousands of contractors also worked on GoW Ragnarok and Cyberpunk 2077 each.

i very much lack faith in this studio, a lot of people from 343 have stayed from what i'm seeing and the first thing they do is show off the artstyle, 343 got the artstyle right in infinite, we have no idea what they have in mind for story, for gameplay and it seems like the first thing they're giving us is another Halo C3 remaster, i'm hopping they bring up something actually new to modernize CE not just to make it look pretty, forge, firefight, etc. Expanding upon the first two games to make them on par with Halo 3 in terms of modernization & replayability would be a good start.

another big feature to note with unreal engine is that xbox game studios as a whole are considered one of the leading supporters of unreal. Mainly with the coalition having insane knowledge about the engine. Perfect dark using UE5 as well. So as well as contractors being able to do their jobs better, they would have better in house support as well.
One thing i am worried about is forge mode however, though they may take UEFN approach with it

343 did fine with the blam engine (Bungie engine), Halo 5 is a great example they put out an insane amount of post launch content after release and the gameplay of Halo 5 tho controversial to some was very fluid, modern and fast. It was the new engine 343 made, Slipspace that really screwed everything up and is why to this day 3 years later the only substantial amount of post launch content we've gotten outside of maps is 1 single weapon. I don't think there can really be any argument about Slipspace not being a new engine now, clearly it was and clearly it screwed Infinite.

I heard from DF that CD Projekt Red is struggling to eliminate Unreal Engine stutters. Through their research, they discovered that these stutters stem from Unreal Engine being a general-purpose engine, bloated with code and functionalities designed to cater to developers across various fields. Say what you will about CDPR, but the engine they built for Cyberpunk is impressive, running that dense open world without noticeable stutter. They achieved this because they developed a set of tools laser-focused on accomplishing a single goal.

In all seriousness I hope the best for the studio. Hopefully they do things such as a kick ass Halo CE remake that is faithful to Bungie's intentions and hopefully retcon the Forerunners retcon and make the Halostory subreddit mald.

So instead of doing something about the baffling management situation of having all of your employees essentially walking through a revolving door, usually right about the time they could really get settled with the studio/ engine, they're just abandoning the engine that's been used for Halo up to this point/ a core piece of Halo's identity and remnant of Bungie to move over to generic engine that pretty much every game uses?
Stoked to hear it, I'm sure Halo is on the up and up from here

I think I've learned my lesson about being over-optimistic with halo these past few years, but I am genuinely excited to see if 343 (or Halo Studios) are finally truly trying to clean up their act. I really hope that all of this marks a new start to our beloved franchise.
