Food always softens them doesn't it. The poor Mothers are afraid to go and find food and leaving their kittens in danger. When you approach a cat for the first time hold your hand down with your fingers tucked in. Let the cat sniff your hand if she isn't showing aggression you can pet her, if she hisses back off a little and feed her.
When a cat has her ears lying back and growling she's going to strike. When you approach a cat with your hand over her head she may think you are going to hit her, she has probably been treated cruelly by Humans and is protecting her babies.
A fist is too aggressive for a cat but you should make a fist for a dog to sniff.
