In our darkest times (1980s), in Romania was no food in the stores, no gas for the pathetic cars we had, just few hours of power per day in our houses and apartments, two hours on the only TV channel we had and those were full of cult of personality dedicated to Ceausescu. You had no option to visit other countries being a Romanian, you were isolated in your own country. That was a nightmare and the definition of the purest communism. In those times, our friends from Yugoslavia had almost everything. Food, clothes, chocolate, Pepsi (oh my God!!), bananas, oranges and tons of other goodies. It was a miraculous convention signed between the Serbian and Romanian governs who allowed to the citizens who lived at 50 km from the borders to travel on the "other side" for 50 km few times a year. It was called the little traffic. When my parents asked me what I want for my birthday I simply tried impossible and I asked a vinyl disk of Iron Maiden or Metallica. The only person who could've accomplish the mission was my beloved grandmother who had her house near the Serbian border. She traveled on the other side, and entered in a music store, full of metal long-hair heads who stared at my granny with strange eyes. She asked the person on the counter for an Iron Maiden disk and she received a negative answer. Her words and her appearance had nothing to do together, she was just an old lady from a small village of Romania. A strange silence hit all the metal heads inside the store. Then, with half of the voice she asked about Metallica, and the guys went all crazy, laughing, throwing Serbian words and raising their eyebrows. My granny became their hero in just few seconds. Some of those guys went at their homes and brought a lot of vinyl disks. When my grandmother returned to Timisoara, she delivered the best heavy-metal collection I could ever imagine. I was in heaven!! Steven, this is a definition of the Serbians. They are naturally proud and stubborn people but when you got inside their soul, you'll discover the human nature at its best. @@boicerdiegio1709 And where are hundreds of thousands Serbs in Romania, with ići on the end of surname and what about Serbian toponyms all around Romania.
As for the sites in Belgrade I could recommend for tourists, those are definitely the districts of Zemun and Belgrade Waterfront. Other than that, if you like nature, you should also check Ada Ciganlija, Košutnjak forest and Topčiderski park. Finally, there is a small mountain near Belgrade (you have a city bus line to there but it would take you an hour) - the Avala mountain. It has a very nice hiking track (not very difficult) and nice monuments and views at the top.
It was likely just a Serbian flag without coat of arms, the flag has colors reversed compared to the Russian one, they are similar but even the color tones are different. Either that or there was a Russian diplomat visiting that day. We don't fly other country's flags otherwise, not even Russian one :). Serbia as well as former Yugoslavia is in the crossroads of East and West, people have similar feelings 50/50... though since 90s most people don't look kindly towards West for all the things that have been done to us. Even so, it usually goes like this, the mind favors West while the heart favors East :).
Only place I've visited in Serbia is Nis. I remember the road to that town....We passed by a village and the image that got stuck in my head, is the smoke that went out the chimney of each house....it didn't go up, it wouldn't dissipate in the air....it would float around the houses, creating a very foggy and ghostly image of the village. I asked my dad about it and he said that the hills sorrounding the area creates a "pot" effect. Then we arrived to Nis and the first person I saw on the streets was an old man with a huge growth on his neck. The air in Nis was unbreathable, the lack of clean air gave me a headache. We would stay in our room with the windows closed. Parts of the town were nice, but other parts were in ruins. I've read a comment here about serbian men and indeed they look quite tall and strong....it must be from all that delicious food, cause I remember the meat and bread....was something like I've never tasted before.
Like I already commented already in one of your previous vlogs, it was or still is an european cyclone and the entire south part of the continent suffered more or less. Athens seems the most, but floods everywhere, even in the southern rural Romania(it rained in Bucharest also for at least 7 days in a row), so its not the usual weather in Belgrade or anywhere in the region for this period of the year, but sorry for you though.
Guys, I think the small water melons are only intended as pickles after staying in water and salt and other spices for a while. Haha, Im curious if they were any good eaten like that LOL
We haven't opened it yet, maybe we will try to pickle it. I keep hearing pickled watermelon is awesome, and we both love watermelon, and pickled stuff, so it sounds delicious :)
@@JetLagWarriors Sure. You can buy it already pickled from local produce markets, but maybe later in the year, like nov-dec, and they are delicious indeed, but usually the best part is the green one u never eat in the summer time and u throw away the most riped part, that with the seeds, because its too mushy ;)
On the Second Graffiti it is written: "I didn't lose my eye I left it there, when all other reasons disappear If only I had a reason to return to Kosovo and Metohija and look for an eye"
6:03 Haha, I would say their temper could be quite dramatic and unpredictable sometimes. The "resting Bxtch" face pretty much happens throughout Eastern Europe and Slavic countries. But once you know them better, they could become some of the best and loyal friends that you could ever ask for, along with a very good sense of humor. I would say they are more truthful and direct when expressing themself, you don't have to smile in public all the time to be considered as "normal". Best people to hang out with.
At least no more wet raining, soggy clothes for a change...Nice to walk around and explore the city. Great video. I keep searching for recent videos from Belgrade so I’m glad you published this. I’m thinking of spending a week in Serbia, as it’s one of the only countries in Europe that is cheap to get to and has few restrictions. From what I’ve gathered from my research, there’s really not that much to do in the city other than have a cultural experience for a couple of days. The food seems great - fresh and amazing, locally grown produce. I feel like a week would be overkill though?
Yeah, you might be right about a week being enough. We are trying to find a local guide who can help us out. Surely partying and chilling is great in Serbia, but that isn't really our style, so we are looking for help.
if you come to Novi Sad, you will be my guest! I can fill you up with many questions that you apparently have. Thanks for promoting our country nonetheless!
The collapsed building you saw was actually a military headquarters building which was destroyed in 1999. NATO bombing, and it was actually deserted because it was “a legitimate military target” so they knew it was gonna get hit, and it was evacuated before t happened.
i've lived in serbia all my life, worst thing about it is that garbage is everywhere.. it really bothers me that we're so dirty everything else i would say is pretty good
Our best friends are Greece, Montenegro, Russia, Belarus and Romania. North Macedonia is not our friend politically, but the people are very close and very friendly. Slovakia could also be considered as a friend maybe.
Russia is not only our best friends, but younger brothers. Same people, same culture, same religion, tradition.. You name it. We are close to Romania, we have strong ties, but Russia is in our bones and souls 😉
Nooo...that's not Russian flag ....Serbian flag with amblem of two head eagle is the official Serbian flag whereas Serbian flag without two head eagle is the National flag of Serbian Unity and Freedom which we celebrate on every 15th of September!!!
That bombed building was the military HQ before NATO bombed it back in '99, they say there are still bombs inside that didn't explode, and that it is too risky to even try to do something, so that's why, 22 years later, they still haven't done anything there.
06:05 - Most Slavic women and people are usually like that. They are like a watermelon, bold from the outside but tender from in the inside. Plus, why would you need to fake and be smiling all the time. People tend to look serious and bold from the outside, but this is not the general rule.
Best friend of Serbia is Serb Republic (in Bosnia and Herzegovina), which with their power of veto makes the whole country of Bosnia “friendly” or at least neutral to Serbia. Serb Republic never looks at Serbia from a geopolitical point of view. Also, Serb people love and respect Russian people. Let’s never forget nation who freed us from Nazis. And in recent years with their power in UN counsel they are making world geopolitics more balanced. So yeah, Russian flag is always welcomed in Serbia, Serb Republic or anywhere where Serbs live.
It probably wasn’t a Russian flag especially on a government building, our flag is reversed colors Russian flag so it’s easy to mix them up, but there’s a state flag with the crest and then there’s people’s flag which is without crest, just a reversed Russian flag (Slavic colours in fact).
I recommend two restorants in Zemun - Mićina domaća kuhinja (in English would be Michael's domestic cuisine), and Vagon (in English train), by the river Danube, with great view of the river Danube. Greetings, and enjoy!
Russian flags were there because some Russian politician was in Serbia on his official tour, but we don t keep Russian flags on official buildings, it would be weird.
Serbia have one of the best basketball teams in Europe along with Slovenia who did amazing in the Tokyo olympics and maybe could have done better, if Luka Dončić hadn't been injured. That's not Russian flag next to a Serbian flag. It Serbian ethnic flag which is just red, blue and white without coat of arms. State flag has the coat of arms on it. So, they are both Serbian flags.
Let's consider just a few facts and common sentiments about Serbia: Serbia got bombed very recently in 1999 by the US and NATO due to their attempted genocide or "ethnic cleansing" of their former Yugoslav neighbors and numerous acts of war crimes. This included systemic rape, massacre of innocent civilians and torture. In fact, cases are still being processed in The Hague from that conflict and mass graves that they have filled with their neighbors bodies continue to be found to this day. Serbians, 24 years later, have done little to nothing to mend their ties with ex Yugoslav neighbors and continue to carry resentment and bitterness towards the US and Western Europe ever since their bombing in 1999 which ended their bloody campaign of terror in the region. They also continue to harbor animosity towards their former yugoslav neighbors. Naturally, they are shunned by them all. Serbians are not known for being "nice". What they're known for is doing Russia's dirty work. This is common knowledge in Europe. World War I started when a Bosnian Serb, Gavrilo Princip, assassinated archduke Franz Ferdinand in a pan-Slavic effort under Russia's influence. Serbian sounds an awful lot like servient, doesn't it? Also, it is widely know that the word slav derives from the Greek "sclabos" and later as "sclav" and "slav". Whereas Russia is the dominant slav, Serbia is the servient slav. Especially interesting when you consider Serbia's long-standing subservient relationship with Russia. One could say that Serbia is a strategic loyal pet ally of Russia in Europe. They cling to their few remaining allies (a few other orthodox Christian nations) which are far and few between. Otherwise, they are alienated and have a very long way to go in order to redeem themselves in the eyes of the world. I hope this helps in painting a more accurate picture of the reality of things.
Man litar gas was 1.5 euro because that was taxi expensive. 1kg flour was 0.5euro because that food was cheeper. Average salary in Serbia was 400 euro...

But Serbia was an aggressor against Romania in 1918 and today it has a policy hostile to the Romanians living in Serbia and even to Romania propagating ridiculous historical untruths. Those who do not know history tend to repeat it.
@@strictlyunreal Yes but we also sold them gas illegally, breaking the NATO imposed embargo.
We couldn't have refused the Americans because that would have hurt us in the long run, also please remember what shitshow the 90's were for Romania and what absolute poverty and insecurity we had to endure. Turning the Americans into a potential enemy was the last thing we needed.
@@Hal-rn2qm We had the balls to do it. We have fought the greatest power(evil) of all time and survived to tell about it to this day. 🙂
@@boicerdiegio1709 And where are hundreds of thousands Serbs in Romania, with ići on the end of surname and what about Serbian toponyms all around Romania.
Thanks for your first impressions on Serbia. Wonderful exploration in Belgrade.
The mind favors the west, while the heart favors the east! This is such an interesting phrase. Thanks for sharing
13:46 Both Serbian flags are on state buildings. The state flag is with the coat of arms, and the national flag without the coat of arms.
Ah!! This helps out a lot. We thought it was Russian and it was very confusing! Thanks again
Glad you came to my country and city. Feel welcome 🇷🇸😀
I've read a comment here about serbian men and indeed they look quite tall and strong....it must be from all that delicious food, cause I remember the meat and bread....was something like I've never tasted before.
good observation. Unfortunately, corruption is the reason for bad air quality.
11:27 I think those small watermellons are for pickling.
Shout out to all you Serbian subscribers 🤟🏻
The market looks interesting. L9ve the stuff from the bakeries. LOL Steve picked up Msian " can, can" and havent forgotten its usage😙
Look forward to watching it later. TQ.
Guys u need a friend over there I am sure is a lot to see !!! It looks beautiful Belgrade 🥰 they have their hiden gems for sure 🥰🖐
I'm planning to go there for the new year's eve 🇷🇸
That small watermelon is used for mixed pickels( very tasty) this time of the year
At least in Romania :))
Belgrade is gorgeous 😍
i love romanians, my wife is half romanian . During the 90 we all drive on romanian gasoline :)
These cakes at green market,
Red filling is , probably, strawberry.
Brown is walnut.
Black is a poppy seed.
All are tasty.
The best day for green markets is Saturday, they are busiest, richest and most beautiful then.
I love all the floor towards the marketplace
Guys, I think the small water melons are only intended as pickles after staying in water and salt and other spices for a while. Haha, Im curious if they were any good eaten like that LOL
We haven't opened it yet, maybe we will try to pickle it. I keep hearing pickled watermelon is awesome, and we both love watermelon, and pickled stuff, so it sounds delicious :)
@@JetLagWarriors Sure. You can buy it already pickled from local produce markets, but maybe later in the year, like nov-dec, and they are delicious indeed, but usually the best part is the green one u never eat in the summer time and u throw away the most riped part, that with the seeds, because its too mushy ;)
they aren't tasty but they are edible.
Nope, they are ripe and sweet, can be pink or yellow Inside. We used to grow them before, old type and not so common these days.
On the Second Graffiti it is written: "I didn't lose my eye I left it there, when all other reasons disappear If only I had a reason to return to Kosovo and Metohija and look for an eye"
They are not Russian flags, but Serbian ones only without a coat of arms
6:03 Haha, I would say their temper could be quite dramatic and unpredictable sometimes. The "resting Bxtch" face pretty much happens throughout Eastern Europe and Slavic countries. But once you know them better, they could become some of the best and loyal friends that you could ever ask for, along with a very good sense of humor. I would say they are more truthful and direct when expressing themself, you don't have to smile in public all the time to be considered as "normal". Best people to hang out with.
Great comment! :)
At least no more wet raining, soggy clothes for a change...Nice to walk around and explore the city. You'll get to see lots of stuff in the local market of different countries you visit that you normally don't see in your own backyard...Stay safe, be vigilant. Actually , there was content creator named Syifa Adriana. she did a trip around Serbia recently .. You might wanna check out her channel ...( BTW, to Ivana, Syifa is an Indonesia.. )
Ciuperci And Zacusca.....:)). Love you guys
on the paperbag is written pekara which means pastry
pekara means bakery;)
It says : Skroz dobra pekara
It is a name of a company and literal translation would be "totally good bakery"
@@Smitzart that's what I meant haha
thanks

Best to go during warmer weather! It's dreary during winter time as is in any place that has winters...
if you come to Novi Sad, you will be my guest! I can fill you up with many questions that you apparently have. Thanks for promoting our country nonetheless!
And Rumunian and Serbian is very good friends
The collapsed building you saw was actually a military headquarters building which was destroyed in 1999. NATO bombing, and it was actually deserted because it was “a legitimate military target” so they knew it was gonna get hit, and it was evacuated before t happened.
i've lived in serbia all my life, worst thing about it is that garbage is everywhere.. it really bothers me that we're so dirty
everything else i would say is pretty good
3:30 it's not from Yogoslavin war, it's from NATO bombing 1999
Bravooooo❤❤❤❤
13:24 Gospodja kaze "tenkju vama", a ispod automatski prevod: "tenkju Obama" 😅
You should go to Kalemegdan fortress, Belgrade waterfront and Ada Ciganlija ( belgrade beach ) 😊
Our best friends are Greece, Montenegro, Russia, Belarus and Romania. North Macedonia is not our friend politically, but the people are very close and very friendly. Slovakia could also be considered as a friend maybe.
Sorry, but didn't NATO bomb Serbia? The countries you mentioned are not Serbia's best friends, but ONLY friends. Big difference.
Nice pro tip Steve... But what happens when you reach the bottom of the popcorn? You put your whole head in? 🤣
No, you tip it back and pour it all over your face by accident! :)

Russia is not only our best friends, but younger brothers. Same people, same culture, same religion, tradition.. You name it.
We are close to Romania, we have strong ties, but Russia is in our bones and souls 😉
Nooo...that's not Russian flag ....Serbian flag with amblem of two head eagle is the official Serbian flag whereas Serbian flag without two head eagle is the National flag of Serbian Unity and Freedom which we celebrate on every 15th of September!!!
serbian are good and strong people
That bombed building was the military HQ before NATO bombed it back in '99, they say there are still bombs inside that didn't explode, and that it is too risky to even try to do something, so that's why, 22 years later, they still haven't done anything there.
Oh, there is so much to see in Belgrade, it's far from just good food and clubbing. Explore!
Beautiful different places supper cool photo
06:05 - Most Slavic women and people are usually like that. They are like a watermelon, bold from the outside but tender from in the inside. Plus, why would you need to fake and be smiling all the time.
People tend to look serious and bold from the outside, but this is not the general rule.
Serbian best friends are Russians and Greeks...injoy our country
the flags were together probably because it was the russian embassy building. but i am just guessing
It probably wasn’t a Russian flag especially on a government building, our flag is reversed colors Russian flag so it’s easy to mix them up, but there’s a state flag with the crest and then there’s people’s flag which is without crest, just a reversed Russian flag (Slavic colours in fact).
love it guys
Did you visit Belgrade Waterfront? Kalemegdan? Ada Ciganlija?
Her name is also very common in Serbia - Ivana!
You should visit Zemun. It's a part of Belgrade, on Danube river. You can also see many old buildings, and try excellent food.
will do!
I recommend two restorants in Zemun - Mićina domaća kuhinja (in English would be Michael's domestic cuisine), and Vagon (in English train), by the river Danube, with great view of the river Danube. Greetings, and enjoy!

Serbian letters was 1 sound 1 letter we have 30 sound and some more don't write but we spoke in some part of the country. HVALA ХВАЛА

I love the markets like that, so much quality produce. All of the items in that bakery looked amazing. We have had cheese bureks rolled in spirols like that before, delicious.
Ooh Luka is Serbian! Wow. I forgot about that! Good one

The current NBA MVP Nikola Jokić is fully Serbian though :)

You should visit Smederevo, city / town on the Danube river, not far from Belgrade with good BUS connection (1.5 hrs driving distance) fortress, Danube, wineries, churches...
Great video, guys. *I'm looking for a $200 to $350 studio or 1BR apartment walking distance (within 30 minutes) to central Belgrade (that walking promenade / bars / cafes / clubs). That's not Russian flag next to a Serbian flag. It Serbian ethnic flag which is just red, blue and white without coat of arms. State flag has the coat of arms on it.
So, they are both Serbian flags.
Let's consider just a few facts and common sentiments about Serbia:
Serbia got bombed very recently in 1999 by the US and NATO due to their attempted genocide or "ethnic cleansing" of their former Yugoslav neighbors and numerous acts of war crimes.
All this but only for the disastrously brainwashed by US/UK NATO propaganda.
Man you was so accurate about Serbian girls. I have dealing with that hole my life.
Man litar gas was 1.5 euro because that was taxi expensive. 1kg flour was 0.5euro because that food was cheeper. Average salary in Serbia was 400 euro...
How much flour and gas you can by for average salary in USA and Canada?
