An excellent honest view of Green. He's always suffered with nerves & I would guess lack of confidence in himself. He's a truly gifted musician who hasn't had the following & success he so richly deserves. Those of us who are lucky enough to appreciate his talent have been rewarded many times over.
terence, well put sir...green has made some of the best pop songs and truly a musicians musician. A guy like miles davis recognized the talent Green had. I wish he truly knew how much his fans respect him...an amazing talent
@@csfan65 I think what we are seeing are some typical British terms & mannerisms. I see some similar traits of the other royal family members when they have given interviews.
@@paulam408 I see those other traits as well. One thing I have always like about the British people is how reserved they are when the speak. Very calm, cool, and collected. I wish that I were more like that.
I really enjoy his detachment from pop music (although that's what he made at this time) and stardom. No real drive to be famous. More a drive to follow the music he wants to make. Very inspirational.
I saw a video of Scritti Politti in concert in 2018 today. Green believe it or not still sounds almost exactly like he did in the 80s. Really surprising!
I remember at the time he seemed to be spoken about as something of an enigma.....Talented individual with a great ability for songwriting.....The word girl i thought was fuckin awesome ....Then i heard ''Oh Patti'' and i was blown away......Great music.
I'm not sure if he's really low in vitality and mood. He just seems to be a tremendously smart and modest person. I love what he says about arty people, even though he obviously has a great background himself. From what I read he seems to be doing a lot better than many other artists of those days. Less commercial, smaller crowd. Although I'm still quite happy that he sold his soul to this huge record company for a while. Would be a great guy to meet in person, I reckon.
Obviously not comfortable in this situaton but comes across as a very interesting and intelligent man, sad we don't hear more from him and more of his music.
I can't believe it! for the last 25 years, I have thought that Scritti Politti was a black R&B musician who just happened to have one of those high pitched voices like El Debarge or Michael Jackson.
Same here until recently. Now I'm a huge fan of Scritti. Always loved Perfect Way & didn't really know who sang it until I did some researching. What a talent he was & is.
Fascinating. A bit like someone in the early stages of dementia who knows what's happening to them Green has so much self-awareness even whilst he's in the pop-star purgatory he was soon to extricate himself from. He always gave a great interview, however uncomfortable he was with the business of promoting his music.
@BezObaw Although, he grew up in Whales, it seems to be the case. He said this in an interview: ''My parents didn’t really get on and to make things worse I got called ‘Nazi’ at school and had seven shades kicked out of me in the playground every day because of my surname. So when my folks split up and mum married her boss I eventually took his surname instead.'' But he doesn't seem to know where it comes from . He was told his grandad was Austrian and just learned it's a lie.
@cisco9x Paula Yates? Are we talking about the same deceased Paula? Ex of Bob Geldof and widow of Michael Hutchence? I only saw her once on a tv show, co-hosting with Joolz Holland (that I love for his work with The The). So I really don't know her. You must be a Brit to make that assumption. Anyway, if it's her, is that a bad thing?
The thing is Green was painfully shy and hated interviews more than anything, no matter the type of interview. But if I could understand better what's being said, or read a transcript, I might agree with you guys about the pertinence of the whole thing.
@BezObaw I don't think he's ugly. Remember he's not the kid he was in the 80s anymore. He's 56, I think. What transforms him is his kind of ''disguise'' (big beard, sometimes lumberjack clothes). I noticed that a lot of very good-looking men from the 80s have beards now . Maybe it's cos it hides a lot & is less dramatic than a facelift. Who knows? But there's smth else about him, you get the feeling he doesn't really care what he looks like, or just has VERY poor taste.
I always saw these guys as like a Steely Dan. I don't believe Green and Gamson ever wanted to tour or grind another 2 years to make a third album after the second one sold less than the first. I think they just loved making records and being in the studio. There's an interview where David says he never wanted to be a performer, just a composer from the start of his childhood music lessons that was his music direction. He never even dreamt of being a star, just because he loved music.
@armanone I honestly thought the same too! Not that there is anything wrong with that lol. Perfect Way was awesome along with Hypnotize. They both sound R&B and very Urban like hence why I thought they were African American haha.
green was really into motown and american urban music thus the sound of the band..he started out more punk rock , but was truly taken by motown so he changed the direction of the band. he shuns the spotlight and has had bouts of severe stage fright so he didnt play live for many years..the last decade he has been playing out more. super talented guy
@BezObaw He was gorgeous! But his grandad's not Austrian. He was told many lies about his family & found out about it 1yr ago . When he was a kid, got sick of being called nazi, so he took his stepdad name. For his first name, he said there were 2 other Paul in his class + he wanted to create himself a weird name. His family accepted it cos he was such a pain in the arse, lol. His inspiration: the greenery of Wales. Don't think he knows why his name is Strohmeyer, only that it's germanic.
A bachelor is someone that is not married or in a relationship but single, so it confused me when he said he was a bachelor but had a girlfriend eh???lol
The term single used to mean unmarried. Did not yet have a life partner. This was back in the 80s. Now in the 2000s it means something totally different. It means not having a current boyfriend, girlfriend, non-binary friend, or whatever you call your latest romantic person
An excellent honest view of Green. He's always suffered with nerves & I would guess lack of confidence in himself.

From Miles Davies to Madness the number of people who needed to cover his music is amazing.
He has such a deep voice but he can sing in such high registers that it blows my mind! He's a wonderful songwriter and musician!
This guy always reminded me of the late Princess Diana!
Agreed! Could be her brother!
I was just thinking the same thing while watching this interview. It's like Diana in a man's body.

Interesting (and nice) guy.. :) love their music since back then. He has one of those unique voices which I adore in the musical sense.

I wish he spoke a little louder though. I've read interviews with him from even earlier on and he is a very intelligent man.
"I get by" he says with a hint of mischief
"I got to see some very renown bloke who's name I can't remember."
There's poetry, ingenuity... and not giving a f---, all in one quote.
nice man . good perspective
It sounds like Paula Yates?
Yeah I was thinking that got to be Paula Yates
Yes, must be from The Tube.

In quite a sweet and endearing way.
Interviewer sounds familiar. Paula Yates?
Bought the album when about 13 or 14..
The interviewer is clearly not a fan, probably into heavy metal or something! Green keeps very cool in the circumstances despite being nervous.
Green is my favorite artist
The interviewer Paula Yates RIP use to flirt with any man she interviewed. She was probably pissed he wasnt interested.

loved the song when i heard it, saw the video, he did not look like he sounded (to me), great song, seems to be a nice person 0_O
Green's got some gaze aversion going on here.
He reminds me of someone with autism ... which may have been why he broke away from the pop world, and became fairly insular.

When I say the second album, I mean Provision, the second Green & Gamson record. Each one taking 2 years to complete.
