At the pitch meeting for Monopoly Builder: "It's gonna be pretty hard to make people hate Monopoly more than they already do." "Actually It's going to be super easy, barely an inconvenience."
And so we made it where the player who goes first is probably going to win. And we made it where the game may literally become impossible to complete. WHOOPS! Whoopsie!
It's far more likely this was one of about 30 ideas that were pitched and was likely given only a month or two to go from pitch to printer. In saying that, I'm not buying it.
Always love it when Tom's frustration, especially concerning Hasbro, erupts. There is no reason mass market games can't be good. Frustratingly, Hasbro has the cash to reinvent themselves into making good games, but they rather ignore the board game industry and make quick cashgrabs that continue to hurt the hobby. Hasbro earned every outburst Tom, and others, has directed at them.
What I love about Tom's rant is you can tell he is not ranting just for ranting sake. You can tell he genuinely wants the hobby to move forward and is sadden by the fact that this is probably going to sell more than all the other quality games that can be found at Target.
The hobby has moved forward though... trails, summer camp, funko games, and many other hobby style games are at mass market stores right now, monopoly used to be front and center now it’s not. Ya’ll making a bigger deal out of it than it is. Step outside of your gamer box and hang out with some casuals, they have code names, marvel United, and Catan right next to monopoly in their closets nowa days.
@@Sam-vk8xd I think you are misunderstanding the statement. For instance, most of the people I play with are not gamers, they are aware of codenames and the like, no point making accusations that we are stuck in "gamer boxes". Even so, most gamers are aware of what is out there. I was just making a note that in most cases the monopoly game will sell more just by recognition.
@@relativelyboard9959 then what was the statement about “the hobby moving forward” then? Monopoly will always sell. Forever and ever. And ever... and ever. And ever ever ever... ever. Dang…when you started out with the broad concepts I was like “oh man, they might have found a way to make monopoly fun and interesting”, then you mentioned the end game conditions and the quality of components and I said “nevermind”.
Ditto! Conceptually this actually didn't sound half bad. I guess the true trashiness comes out in actual play. Ill stick to Monopoly Gamer as the only one worth a damn.
At the end of the pitch meeting: "It doesn't need to be a good game. Just make the components as cheap as possible, put the word 'Monopoly' on the cover, and we'll make a ton of money."

Tom I feel your pain. You are justified in slapping the game. Can we get a "Pitch Meeting" video about this game? It would be "barely an inconvenience".
It looks like someone had some good ideas... and someone else ripped those ideas to shreds then glued some of those shreds to a monopoly board. I do think there is a game in there. But instead, mass market companies strike again >.>
Board games are in a golden age where all manner of games are designed, from children's to party to abstract to wargames. Yet Hasbro can only create derivative garbage of their old titles. There's a range of designers out there and they've got the cash to build upon their existing brand but we get this. Monopoly needs to die a slow death and them with it.
I fondly remember the times when the review would be you throwing a game like this from the rooftop or giving it to your daughters to put into the garbage bin by relay. AAAhhhh... memories!
I can't really tell, did Tom like this game or not? As a sidenote you've got to hand it to the people at Hasbro though, they really know how to make the original Monopoly look better than it is. Simply by making it worse with some new trash added to it.
I can't find this on BGG. Weird for a game that's in retail. Also, it's interesting Vasel bought it retail. Guess Hasbro have Dice Tower on a blacklist.
What's up with all that gunk on the board? It looks like a ton of printing errors, or something on the property spaces. Like when the board was folded up, the ink bled out.
Even with all the hate, the game was still rated TWO stars. Even the Kraft Heinz Variety Game Pack got two stars. I wonder what game will get only one star (or even zero if it's an option) from The Dice Tower.
Hasbro makes me sad. So much power in their hands to introduce so many kids and families to something that could become a lifelong passion. But instead they aim for the lowest possible denominator and hit it.
The beginning of this video when he mentions Machi Koro and Catan made me wish Hasbro would license the Monopoly name to actual good designers. They could make some actually decent games that way...
Can they though? My understanding from seeing the games and the reviews is that Monopoly games are always made with certain elements always in the game- like those four corners, buying property and the roll & move mechanic. So can you build a great game around that?
8:05 Only because the yellow player (read Zee Garcia) has a slight advantage. Now, if it were the *Purple* player (read "You know who") with the slight advantage ... 🤔, that hat might've stayed on 😂
Wow, at a glance at first it looked like maybe this had a seed of a chance of being a decent Monopoly themed version of Machi Koro. But, yikes! 😯 Personally I think Monopoly itself can be made to be kind of ok if you add the house rule that, instead of people automatically being able to buy any property they land on, that all unowned properties automatically go up for auction when someone lands on them. It makes it so players actually have to weigh how much they think all the properties are worth to them and reduces the amount of luck involved in the early game. The game still has issues but at least it’s a workable improvement.
Was actually intrigued by this, and then I saw the paper money and knew this was going to be a funny one. Only 2 monopoly games I can recommend when playing with kids are Monopoly Deal and Monopoly Gamer.
Absolutely agree!! I foolishly allowed a sliver of hope that this game might do something better than standard Monopoly... that was a mistake! Thanks for the review Tom.
Funfact: when Hasbro asked us last autumn if we would feature their newest games for Spiel Digital (we had an offline event in our boardgamecafe) we declined because they really had not one single appealing game coming out … Amazing how much money one can make in producing garbage for decades.
That's a shame, for a moment there I was hopeful that this might incorporate some of the ideas from Monopoly Tycoon but as soon as we saw the components that hope was shattered.
I feel like the game misses the point of Mayfair/expensivest property. That place gives you huge money because it’s hard to get to but now it’s worth getting because you get stuff on a seven! Also, Tom, have you tried monopoly cheaters editions? That one feels like it has the most potential to be an actual good game.
Sorry, but this was possibly one of the very best DT reviews I have ever seen, full of passion and fervour, and demonstrating a real understanding of why gamers get upset at lazy design... And how I burst out laughing when the fans box was sent flying across the studio -- Go, go, Tommo! 👍
The Dice Tower needs to issue a Seal of Shame for games that are so poorly designed or produced, they should not be played by anyone. Publishers would never display it but it'd be hilarious to see on a game's BGG entry.
that mustve been satisfying to drop the hammer on the building in the end (whilst saying Traassshh). Hasbro should really appreciate the fact that Tom STILL gives a neutral chance to even the Monopoly franchise....regardless of the fact the designers/publishers barely make an effort to earn that opportunity anymore. You gave them a chance, they blew it (again) and they'll continue to disappoint you going forward :( you deserve better Tom...they'll never change. (Yes Hasbro has become quite the Abusive Boardgame Publisher, so sad) But i still respect the fact as a reviewer you try to give mass market games...... ' A Chance'. Yeah that was a bad pun....ill get me coat :P Cheers for the review Tom
he missed some points that need to be said - when anyone rolls 6 -- everyone gets two resources of their OWN color; the yellow player only benefits at the very end -- for building the fourth level.

Then it makes it way to a cottage and dies a slow death on some shelf slowly being taken by mold.

When I saw the building pieces (like Manhattan) and that you collect resources based on rolls (like Catan), I thought this might be an interesting game to play with the kids. But the game quality could have been better, and that is an odd endgame condition?!?
I watch a positive Tom review - and contemplate maybe buying the game when I can. I watch a negative Tom review - and immediately go to play it for my family and friends.

Totally agree with you, of course. And with the deserved tongue lashing you have dealt Hasbro here.
