I will wait a couple of days (thanks for your input on that). You had mentioned that YT will change the chapter thumbnails to whatever is already in the video AT THE POINT OF THE CHAPTER START. Since all my chapters start from a fade to black, will all my chapter thumbnails be black? Obviously, that won't be much help to the viewer. Rather than trying to learn new video editing software, I'd start with Canva dot com, select a UA-cam template, and then design he thumbnail from there. Once the Thumbnails are created and downloaded, they can then be added to a new Timeline track in any video editing software. ▼ Give me a yell if this isn't clear - happy to help :-) Cheers Teena
@@TeenaHughesOnline Thank you for your reply. In lieu of letting UA-cam decide what the chapter thumbnails to create, I would love to try what you suggest in your tutorial above, specifically what you talk about at Step 6. You are using Screenflow for Mac. I downloaded that program, but I don't understand how to apply the thumbnails to the timeline. I just see video and audio tracks in Screenflow. If I try to lay thumbnails on top of the video track, it just creates another video track. Am I missing something?
🔳 Hi there Anthony - in Screenflow for Mac, yes - I create a new Timeline ABOVE the video and audio tracks. Then I can create thumbnails in 2 different ways, and add the Chapter thumbnails to this new timeline: 🔳 (Option 1) in Canva, where I download the image and upload to Screenflow, and drag the image onto the new Timeline in the location of the Chapter I'm working with. 🔳 (Option 2) I can create Text in Screenflow and add a background colour if I like, directly on the new Timeline. By selecting the Text option, it will automatically create a new timeline above the other timelines. 🔳 Please note - The new Timeline must be above the others in Screenflow, so that the image/text will be seen "in front of" the video. These can clearly be seen in Step 6 of this video. 🔳 As you've never used Screenflow before, there are many great tutorials on UA-cam. 🔳 Best of luck, Cheers Teena

Could the placing of unique images in videos at key times be considered "bait" for UA-cam to find? Even in this video (chapter pics at the bottom of the description) it does seem to be hit and miss. Chapters 1-5 it got right, yet for 9 and 10 it took different "bait" and used that. Still, this tactic seems quite clever. My biggest complaint with the automatic chapter system is by the time UA-cam does decide on which thumbnails to use, a huge chunk of the total views that video will ever receive has already passed by.
▼ Hey there @MorreskiBear - thanks for dropping by. When I'm sharing Chapters in my videos I see it as a helpful action, not sure how it could be "bait" for UA-cam :-) ▼ I just watched Chapters 8 to 10 and the timing is correct - perhaps it was a wifi glitch on your end? ▼ With the "automatic Chapters", I prefer to add my own in before I upload, like the pink images for each chapter in this video. Have you tried that technique?
@@TeenaHughesOnline Sorry, by "bait" I mean it is something the UA-cam chapter-thumbnail lookie-thing might see as unique, and thus makes it more likely to choose that image compared to a less interesting moment in that chapter. Kind of like a suggestion, putting a shiny bow on the gift we want it to choose. When I expand the description of this video here, at the bottom it shows (at least for me) for example "Step 08 - Upload to UA-cam" but the thumbnail for that chapter above the text is a large pink "09". Is that the same for you? I know if I click it, it will surely jump to the "08" in the video though. So much as changed in recent years and I'm trying to figure out the finer points.
@MorreskiBear ▼ ahhhhh I see what you mean :-) ▼ The Chapter "timings" always appear in 2 places (if manually added by me) - (1) in a list in the Description, and (2) appearing as small thumbnails across the screen at the bottom of the Description./ ▼ In this case, I typed the Chapter "timings" into the Description, and usually UA-cam then shows the correct Thumbnails BELOW the Description (which generally match the timings I've provided). ▼ On THIS video, UA-cam HAS done something weird in that series of small Thumbnail images! ▼ The "timings" are correct, but the "thumbnails" for 7, 8, 9, etc are out of whack! ▼ Well spotted :D Unfortunately, there's nothing I can do to remedy that :-(
Very helpful. I've been wondering how to do exactly this and you just made that very clear. At the very end of your video when asking for a thumbsup a circle started going around the thumbsup. You got one from me. But... How did you do that? Can that be done with the subscribe option too? This circle rotation seemed to work great on EDGE but not so much on CHROME.
▼ Hey there @OneGodUnderFire! So glad this made sense :D The animation on the "thumbs up" is something which UA-cam adds in, to encourage people to click - I agree, it does look pretty cool! Thanks for clicking on it, much appreciated 💜
Hi, still a bit confused about how to actually change the chapter thumbnail - so to have a different thumbnail image for each chapter? The main question is can the chapter thumbnail be changed (all I have at the moment is the main title thumbnail appearing at the head of each chapter - looks a bit boring) after the video has been uploaded?
▼ Hi there @LiteraryCat-fo9tj - unfortunately the Chapter thumbnails cannot be edited AFTER the video has been uploaded to UA-cam. ▼ Now that you know this, it'll be easier to follow my instructions for your next video before it gets uploaded to UA-cam. Please let me know if you have any other questions about Chapters or other UA-cam video questions. Cheers Teena
@@TeenaHughesOnline Seems pretty counterintuitive on UA-cam's part to make the their content creators embed these images into their project prior to uploading. After the upload there's no chance to change anything in the future without deleting and reuploading if you decide you don't like it or make a mistake. If their video editor can let you trim and cut, alter the image and even embed clickable thumbnails within the video it should be effortless for UA-cam to simply add this feature as well, especially considering how long it's been a thing.

Hi Teena thanks for this video! I added UA-cam Chapters to my latest video description. They are showing up nicely, but the thumbnail for each chapter is just my Video thumbnail. Have you noticed it can take some time for the chapter thumbnails to get generated? Thanks!
▼ ▼ Hey @Motivation Pass! Apologies for the late reply! What usually happens is that it can take UA-cam a few days to sort out the actual "time" pinpointed in the Chapters. Now it's been a few days, are the right sections of the video appearing as Chapter "thumbnails" yet?
@TeenaHughesOnline Hey! I have the same problem. When I don't submit the timestamps in the video description, YT generates the timestamps automatically with corresponding chapter thumbnails, but not with 100% accuracy (in one of my videos one chapter is missing completely). On the video that I posted *two weeks ago* and wrote the timestamps in the description, there is still the main video thumbnail at each chapter!
✅ Hey there @The-Simpsons-Universe • if we don't write the Chapter timestamps in the Description, UA-cam will do it for us - that's correct :-) ✅ If UA-cam missed one of the Chapters or their timing is a bit wrong, that's easy to fix. Create your own Chapter Timestamps in the Description and after a day or two UA-cam will show YOUR timestamps instead of theirs :-) ✅ On the video where you wrote the timestamps, did you (1) create the Timestamp Images, (2) insert the Timestamp Images into the video during video editing, and (3) upload that video to UA-cam? If you did, it sometimes takes a few days for UA-cam to show those new thumbnails within the actual uploaded video. ✅ If you did not include the Timestamp Images before uploading to UA-cam, then UA-cam will continue to show the video without individual Thumbnail images. Unfortunately, once the video has already been published on UA-cam, the new Thumbnail Images cannot be uploaded. ✅ Please do let me know if you have any other questions. Have a great week ahead! ▼ To create video Thumbnails, I use Canva, Keynote for Mac, video editing software - there are many ways to make the thumbnails. It will depend on your level of skill, and what you'd like the thumbnails to look like. Rather than trying to learn new video editing software, I'd start with Canva dot com, select a UA-cam template, and then design he thumbnail from there. Once the Thumbnails are created and downloaded, they can then be added to a new Timeline track in any video editing software.
▼ Give me a yell if this isn't clear - happy to help :-)

Then I can create thumbnails in 2 different ways, and add the Chapter thumbnails to this new timeline:
🔳 (Option 1) in Canva, where I download the image and upload to Screenflow, and drag the image onto the new Timeline in the location of the Chapter I'm working with.
🔳 Best of luck,
Cheers

@@TeenaHughesOnline Wonderful! Thank you. I will try it.
Hi there, i just uploaded a video guide with different timestamps on my channel but i couldn't find a way to change the chapter thumbnail from UA-cam settings. Is there a way to change the chapter thumbnail without mounting the all video again?
▼ Hi there @redpanda84 - you've come to the right place :-)
▼ If you've already uploaded your video to UA-cam, it's too late to add your own Chapter Thumbnail images. Is that your main question? I'm not quite sure, so I'll do my best to answer what I think you're asking about.
▼ The good news is that if you watch this video, and follow all the steps for your NEXT video (before you upload to UA-cam), you'll have your own Chapter Thumbnail images appearing after a day or two.
▼ Check out MY Chapter Thumbnails and the step-by-step instructions in this video's Description, which will help you get started.
▼ Best of luck! Cheers
Teena
@@TeenaHughesOnline Yeah that was my main problem,i watched the video where you said i need to add them before but i still don't know how to do it. I'm using Android on my smartphone so i think i need some good app to do that
@@redpanda84 - so glad you've watched the video and that it made sense 🙂
▲ When you say you're "using Android" on your smartphone, I am thinking this means you have an Android smartphone and want to use that.
▲ If that's the case, you could install the UA-cam App on the smartphone, if you haven't done that yet.
▲ If you also have the Canva App installed on the Android smartphone, you'll be able to follow my instructions on how to create the Thumbnail images, save them to the Photos on the phone, then use a video editing App to add your video and images to create the video.
▲ The last step would be to upload that into the UA-cam App. Hope this helps 🙂
@@TeenaHughesOnlineIt's like you added some texted picture to the video and then you matched the chapter title with that picture text right? The video i made is about some game guide i created but there's no text line in it.
▼ Hey @@redpanda84 - it's 2am here, I'm heading to bed, I'll reply tomorrow. :-)
When I'm sharing Chapters in my videos I see it as a helpful action, not sure how it could be "bait" for UA-cam :-)
▼ I just watched Chapters 8 to 10 and the timing is correct - perhaps it was a wifi glitch on your end?
@MorreskiBear ▼ ahhhhh I see what you mean :-) ▼ The Chapter "timings" always appear in 2 places (if manually added by me) - (1) in a list in the Description, and (2) appearing as small thumbnails across the screen at the bottom of the Description./
▼ In this case, I typed the Chapter "timings" into the Description, and usually UA-cam then shows the correct Thumbnails BELOW the Description (which generally match the timings I've provided).
Ah so I just have to wait... thanks for the tips!
▼ No worries! Glad I could help @Gabor Csatlos :-) (renamed to @gaborcsatlos9077)
Cheers

@@TeenaHughesOnline Seems pretty counterintuitive on UA-cam's part to make the their content creators embed these images into their project prior to uploading. After the upload there's no chance to change anything in the future without deleting and reuploading if you decide you don't like it or make a mistake. If their video editor can let you trim and cut, alter the image and even embed clickable thumbnails within the video it should be effortless for UA-cam to simply add this feature as well, especially considering how long it's been a thing.

Do you automatically set the starburst section of your comments? I like that too.
Hi @@OneGodUnderFire - if there are starbursts in the Comments, they must be something UA-cam is doing :-) They've been doing a lot of tweaking lately
I don't know what to say...but I'm little bit concerned cause UA-cam these days act so strange to me. I edited one very long video inside UA-cam Studio editor, I only added some music and after that videochapters which were all different I mean...dissapeared. I did not change anything, In the video description section before or after that...and sometimes it appeared...sometimes don't...so I don't know if these totally works but it's good tip to go. Don't know how it can something happened with videochapters thumbnail, If I just change music of video...but don't touching anything else :/
Hi there @josipkova5402 - gosh, what a shock! So sorry to hear this. Perhaps if you wait a couple of days, it might sort itself out and go back the way it was. I wouldn't try to edit anything right now, just leave it and give UA-cam time to fix the temporary changes it has made. Best of luck!

Most of my videos have chapters, but the thumbnails are auto-generated from the video. I came here because the title gave me the impression that there is a way to upload custom thumbnails for the chapters. I guess not. Bummer.
▼▼ Hi there @ZoggFromBetelgeuse - thanks for dropping by, and yes - you came to the right place to find out how to "add multiple images". I created several videos about how to add Thumbnails for Chapters, and in the Title of this one, you can see - "Part 2". This is the second video of two videos :-)
▼▼ Here is the link to "PART 1" - I hope this helps, there are a ton of questions in the Comments on both videos, which also might help. Please do reach out if you have more questions :-) ua-cam.com/video/dto1u84qf5M/v-deo.html
@@TeenaHughesOnline Yes, I've watched that before. It doesn't tell me how to upload custom thumbnails for chapters, either. (It explains how to add chapters and that UA-cam automatically creates thumbnails, but I already knew that.)
▼▼ The Thumbnails for Chapters must be added to the video BEFORE it is uploaded to UA-cam. ▼▼
▼@@ZoggFromBetelgeuse - At this point in time, there is no way to UPLOAD Thumbnails for Chapters AFTER the video has been uploaded.
▼ Perhaps in the future UA-cam might change this, but right now, additional Thumbnails for Chapters cannot be uploaded once the video is uploaded to UA-cam.
▼ I hope this explanation makes it clearer, let me know if you still have questions.

Thanks for sharing this! Going to try this out for my next video!
▼ Glad it was helpful @jell-g (now @JellGExplorer)! Let me know if you have any questions :-)
It takes a few days for youtube to add the timepoint image as a thumbnail for each chapter until then it'll show the main thumbnail!
▼ @@oysterandomelette - yes, that's correct :D Thanks for dropping by!
✅ Hey there @The-Simpsons-Universe • if we don't write the Chapter timestamps in the Description, UA-cam will do it for us - that's correct :-)
✅ If UA-cam missed one of the Chapters or their timing is a bit wrong, that's easy to fix. Create your own Chapter Timestamps in the Description and after a day or two UA-cam will show YOUR timestamps instead of theirs :-)
✅ On the video where you wrote the timestamps, did you (1) create the Timestamp Images, (2) insert the Timestamp Images into the video during video editing, and (3) upload that video to UA-cam? If you did, it sometimes takes a few days for UA-cam to show those new thumbnails within the actual uploaded video.
✅ If you did not include the Timestamp Images before uploading to UA-cam, then UA-cam will continue to show the video without individual Thumbnail images. Unfortunately, once the video has already been published on UA-cam, the new Thumbnail Images cannot be uploaded.
✅ Please do let me know if you have any other questions.
Have a great week ahead!
Cheers

▼ Hey there @CoolTelho - so glad I could help :-)
Rather than use a video editor to add another track for the thumbnails, i s there a way to upload all my thumbnails (same count as my timeline of chapters) while in the UA-cam Studio and while in edit mode for a video and match them up to the timeline I placed in the Description. I have Auto-generate chapters set off on my channel before I upload the video. Thanks for your help. I did Subscribe to your channel.
▶︎ Hi there @UsaHickTown - thanks for dropping by - great question! The short answer is "No!" - you cannot upload multiple thumbnails for a video, unless they are different versions to be used as the MAIN thumbnail only.
▶︎ Let me see if I can explain it with a bit more information. If it still doesn't make sense, please do let me know :-)
▶︎ There are 2 types of Thumbnails:
◘ the uploaded Video Thumbnail (there is ONE of these visible for any YT video)
◘ the Chapter Thumbnails within the video.
▶︎ In UA-cam each video can have ONE active Thumbnail image.
▶︎ The Chapter software within UA-cam selects a TIME location in each video, and shows whatever is ALREADY in the video - at that time position - as the "Chapter Thumbnail".
▶︎ This means that the "Chapter Thumbnails" are chosen from the published video's content.
▶︎ The video's MAIN "Thumbnail" can be uploaded by the Channel owner, or UA-cam will select one from the video.
📌 To answer you question:
▶︎ no - you cannot upload multiple thumbnail images to insert into a published video.
▶︎ but you CAN insert additional thumbnails when CREATING a video, to be used for the Chapter Thumbnail images after the video is uploaded.
▶︎ Hope this helps!
Cheers
Teena.
@@TeenaHughesOnline when you say "but you CAN insert additional thumbnails when CREATING a video, to be used for the Chapter Thumbnail images after the video is uploaded." I most assume this is another track I must create on the video editing software, and post those Thumbnail images at the correct times for each image, is that what you are saying. How do I remove all the auto-generated chapter Chapter thumbnails - even though I had auto-generated chapter unchecked on the Channel before uploading?
📌 @@UsaHickTown - yes, you've got it right :-)
📌 You do need to add one additional Timeline track (during video creation/editing) where you can add the additional images (thumbnails) to appear within your video.
📌 Once the video is "live" on UA-cam, it will be up to you to add the exact times (and Titles for the Chapters) within the Description.
📌 It may take a day or two for the auto-generated Chapters to be replaced by your new Chapter details typed into the video Description.
📌 Let me know how you get on, best of luck!
@@TeenaHughesOnline You said (and I thought this would be the case) that The Chapter software within UA-cam selects a TIME location in each video, and shows whatever is ALREADY in the video - at that time position - as the "Chapter Thumbnail". I only recently decided to start using chapter links on my little rescue possum's videos because more often than not they're several days put together. And since that can make them a little lengthy sometimes, I realize people may not watch them all in one sitting.
