    “Six hours until what, Alex?” Holden said. “Details, please.”
    “Figure two-, three-hundred-kilometer-an-hour winds, lightning, torrential rains. You’re far enough inland to avoid the three-kilometer-high tsunami.”
    “Basic wrath of God package, minus drowning,” Holden said, reaching for humor to hide his rising fear. “How certain is this?”
    “Uh, Captain? I’m watching the other side of the planet rip itself to shreds right now. This isn’t a prediction. This is thousands of klicks of planet between you and the apocalypse disappearing fast.”
    “Got some video to send?”
    “Yep,” said the pilot. “Got fresh underwear for after you watch it?”

      Loved the way they depicted it in the book. The air blast as depicted in the show was muted by comparison -- as someone who lives in an area subject to frequent and severe thunderstorms, we know a thing or two about how changes in air pressure herald their arrival. The blast front from that impact wouldn't be a one-and-done gust like we saw here, it'd be more like how the book describes it (and if you were too close to the impact site, with too much air piled up, it'd flat-out kill you like the concussive shockwave put out by a bomb); figure they decided a wave was more dramatic (I will admit it's damned good television).

    I was laughing so hard when Kat was complaining about having something irritate her eye and you were going to watch this episode. So fitting. As for what you saw, I would like to point out that the reactor failures on ships started after the island power plant exploded and their sensors showed other islands were winding down. I am fairly sure it was a security measure to shut down the other islands that crippled the ships power generating systems as side effect. No idea what the melting moon was about, but maybe it was siphoning off the heat from the islands? Though I am surprised it would be enough energy to melt whole moon. Or maybe it is just the surface that is used to cool off by the ambient absolute zero temperature of space?

      Matej Sojka the moon was explained in the books: the shuttle was shot down by a particle ray from the moon before the latter started to meld. The moons contain ancient defense platforms, which broke directly afterwards, and their reactor failed.

He'll cooperate as long as it makes sense, then he's gonna start protecting his people. He's such a well written character.. god this show is amazing

    I wasn't sure if I liked Bobbie going rogue at first, but I think this really fits Mars situation. Before the Ring, everyone working as one for the goal of creating life on Mars (Heard this song today and it's stuck in my head), like a huge hive mind, and now is everyone for themselves. Besides, all she did was trying to do the right thing, but since it wasn't for Mars's sake, she gets tossed aside. It's better for her to think only on herself for now.

    Yes, the network of connected systems is all in the milky way. More precisely, they are all within a relatively small bubble of maybe 1000 lightyears across. Which makes perfect sense since the method of spreading out the network is via protomolecule rocks travelling at a tiny fraction of the speed of light for probably millions of years before they reach their respective target. No faster than light engines anywhere here.
    This small bubble of space still contains millions of systems, so there is no shortage of potential targets.

      Thank you! I was just thinking about how the universe expands and accelerates exponentially (that's what I was taught in school anyway) so I couldn't help but think one billion out of 14 years meant some distance closer than "now".

    • @hcwm2
      @hcwm2 4 роки тому +1

      @@KatSonny OK, turns out we were speaking of different things then. For the time being only the space between galaxies is expanding, gravity keeps the integrity of galaxies intact. The expansion of the universe needs to accelerate by many magnitudes before it can start to rip galaxies apart. There is an ongoing debate whether or not that will ever happen. Hopefully it doesn't because I find such an end to the universe depressing. ;)

    • @pseudonymousbeing987
      @pseudonymousbeing987 4 роки тому +1

      @@hcwm2
      It's not that only the space between galaxies is expanding. It's that all space is expanding but it's only really affecting things on the scale of intergalactic distances. You mentioned gravity vs expansion which is just like how the forces in an atom work, the strong force overpoweres electromagnetism inside the nucleus and holds the protons together who otherwise want to fly apart because they're repelled by each others positive charge. So that's the strong force defeating electromagnetism inside a nucleus like how gravity is defeating the expansion of space inside galaxies. That reminds me of how nature has repeating patterns that go through all it's scales like the fractals of deltas to blood vessels.
      Also what's interesting is that as a nucleus gets bigger and bigger it gets more unstable until eventually the strong force is defeated and we get radioactive decay. What would the decay of galaxies look like? Fascinating. The patterns continue. The hypothetical model of the universe's death being at the hands of ever accelerating expansion is called the big rip (I just realized that's kind of hilarious what with the connotations of it) but maybe it should universal decay.

    So, here's a switch. I'm actually gonna defend Morty for once. Despite my overall criticism of him (as a 'person', not the writing of the character), his caution about the shuttles is warranted.
    First, the current dangers of the uncharted planet make it prudent to operate only one shuttle at a time given the highly unexplained events happening: a giant explosion, a man who talks to a dead person who is connected to dead aliens, flying metal bugs, and fusion being put on pause.
    Second, he's still at odds with the Belters who had at least one group of extremists try to blow up a shuttle earlier and half succeed. Now that Murphy has executed (or IMO murdered) that group, there may be a new group and more reprisals. While blowing up a shuttle is not a sensible thing for anyone to do right now, extremists are not known for their sensible nature.
    So, from my perspective, Marty _is_ actually playing ball by agreeing to help the Belters get off-planet at all but still being prudent by keeping one shuttle in reserve.
    (Also, it saves him from the danger of having any 'special modifications' revealed.)
    Murtry is still an asshole, though.
