Great review for a great album. Sadly some of Prince's most unusual releases are heavily underrated. His instrumental releases, The Truth, One Nite Alone, Exodus are among his best since the 80s in my opinion, but there are two problems: critics shun them since they're not stuff for pop/rock/r&b music critics, and the critics who would actually be able to understand them don't care for them because they undervalue Prince, seeing him as a "pop" artist. At the same time, most Prince fans just have a pop/rock/r&b background, so they don't have the knowledge to understand all his music. The open-mindedness you need to be able to grasp all that he has achieved is a rare thing. His eclecticism was his greatest strength and his worst enemy at the same time. Most people just know about 10% of what he could do.

The cassette I believe has a photo of Mayte en pointe. For some reason I always thought of it as a ballet liken to what you describe. I vaguely recall that the NPG Dance Company may have used parts of it in shows. I wish I knew more about the Dance Company.
Often we would listen to the cassette when we were having friends over for Sunday dinner or large gatherings, it never failed to catch people's ears and spark conversation even though it was meant as "background" music. No one would believe it was Prince so we'd have to show the cassette case and explain that it was created as a gift for Mayte on their wedding day.
Kamasutra is one of my favorites, however I easily understand how on it's own without context and in light of other sounds/songs Prince created it would not be enjoyable to those who have an expectation/anticipation of what Prince should sound like. It is very much an experiment and I was always hoping there was more to go with it as it seemed so short, but it was great that it could play in a loop without losing its beauty or boring me as new moments come to the forefront pending how un/focused you are on it.
Maybe there will be more from the vault that either adds to it directly or that he just did other experiments that were not released. While truly saddened that he is gone...if I may state the obvious his children will continue to entertain us until the dawn.
I truly appreciate your great reviews and am grateful that you take such time. Wishing you and everyone the best by sending love light wealth and health to all.

I absolutely love Prince, but horns and no lyrics, it’s not my fav. I do appreciate him trying different things, he’s ambitious, even if this album comes off flat to me. Great review! Thanks for your interpretation

I advise you to try out jazz from the 20s to the 60s. The music that came before him helps us understand Prince better.

@@DanieleBrunengo thank you for your suggestion 🎶 jazz is intimidating to me. Ive actually unintentionally listened to 20s jazz via movies. Like the Untouchables movie, love the jazz in that film. I’ll definitely take a listen to more. I actually love Prince’s Rainbow Children album. That’s kinda jazzy too, and an interesting storyline. I LOVE that album. 💗😌

Great video glad to see you finally review this album cuz I actually really enjoy it. Ive always enjoyed instrumental/classical albums so I was excited when I heard abt it’s existence. The funny thing tho is that I’ve been aware of this album for a a couple years now yet I didn’t know that this came out in 97 lmao.

It’s amazing how even the notes without lyrics can take people to either various places or the same place. The Genius had such an understanding of not also the notes, but how you play them. Evoking different emotions. Your review, I truly believe, placed a huge Purple smile in heaven. What a passionate and spot on review! When I first heard the album in the 90’s, I immediately knew that this was a concept record. Thank you for such a review worthy summary. I will definitely check out your music!!!

Amazing review 👍☺️this is one of personal favourite side projects . While it is honestly a bit dated in some very specific ways (the synths and some synth sounds) and also quite personal to his feelings towards mayte , but it’s honestly a gorgeous piece or pieces of music. The last 10 minutes of this album are unbelievable as a closer to it aswell. Just a total masterpiece of it’s time . I have undertaker on cd now so this is the only one I don’t have officially on physical copy

Funny! Of course I am. I understand the whole concept and that's great but I don't think this music is his bag. He makes great love songs but this kind of ''New Age'' Kenny G. stuff wasn't done well. I know Prince is the greatest music artist but he needed Wendy and Lisa for this album to flesh out his ideas better. Just because it's Prince it doesn't always mean it's great. He should have just let his wife at the time enjoy it. However I'm looking forward to your new posts....Hey Prince's Friend....I love you!! Lol

The only thing keeping this album down is the questionable orchestral '90s synth sounds. But I can look past that.
Most fans don't seem to appreciate this, and I think it goes beyond the goofed up synths. They just want something that sounds like pop music. That's why NEWS and Xpectation are kind of forgotten most of the time. But it's music with great atmosphere and feeling. "Pearls before the swine," I guess.

I think your interpretation is a little wonky and simply off. Prince only married M1 because she was already pregnant. The entire story made up was fake. Hence the song he wrote after he left her in 1998 “The Greatest Romance That’s Ever Been Sold” He moved on to the gorgeous Manuela after the pregnancy didn’t work out. Manuela who looked like Vanity btw
This whole M1 scheme is hilarious

Read an article some months ago with Prince (late 96 or early 97) where he talked about Karmasutra. In his words he said it was totally written for Mayte & played @ their wedding. He stated that when the music reached the crescendo Mayte was walking down the aisle & e everyone was in tears & it was amazing. He also mentioned that it was a great CD to make love to.
