This is how you knew the Muppets would be big. All you needed was the way the Kermit like character reacts when he realizes the thing next to him wasn't what he thought it was. The hilarious facial reaction is far better then what other puppeteers were doing. Jim made the characters seem human, if exaggerated in a funny way.
They were frequent guests on the Today show, and it was clear to me even at the age of six, like when I saw this, they didn’t consider children their primary audience. I was alone in the house, the TV was my babysitter, and this would easily be considered child abuse/neglect. But it was the times, and not the worst thing my parents did. I got to ride around in the bed of dad’s pickup, freeway speeds and all. Life was trauma and delight, and I am not risk adverse at all.

1955 The Muppets came out. With a prime time show called “Sam And Friends” the first episode aired May 9, 1955.
