    For me the seats in the BMW i3 were nice and high so much easier to get in and out of. A real winner for me at 80yrs. All other evs have considerably lower seats.

    I’ve been using the first generation i3 since 2015, range is not an issue, I do a maximum of 50 miles of driving in a day and most of the time I only use half the battery per day, that’s on a car with an 80 mile range full charge.
    What I would like to see more of in the EV reviews is talk about efficiency, it’s all well and good saying this EV does 300 miles, that EV only does 150 miles on a single charge, great, but I and many others won’t ever need that on a daily basis.
    And you have to think okay, we are now driving around 400+ Kg of lithium cells we will never use, pushing efficiency right down, just to please the people who haven’t lived with an EV and still worry about range.
    At some stage if the battery energy density goes up higher I think they should offer an i3 with around 150 miles of range but less lithium cell weight than the first generation i3, pushing even more toward a hyper efficient EV.

    • @llavero5
      @llavero5 Рік тому

      The battery does not weigh 400kg but closer to 200.
      The difference in weight between the 3 batteries from the lightest to the heaviest is 70kg.
      The car would not be hyper-efficient as you say because it is lighter, it is the aerodynamics that affects the most (even in the city it is very important) and it is not very good at it.
      People need big batteries even if they don't use their full range, because bigger batteries last longer.
      It is not the same that in 500km you have spent 3 life cycles (3 charges) than only 1 cycle (one charge) knowing that batteries have limited useful life cycles.

    I’ve owned a second hand i3 for about 2 months. It was a toss up between this and a new Nissan Leaf.
    The Nissan Leaf pretty much beats the i3 on every metric except for one thing: fun. The i3 is really fun to drive and I love the funky design.

    I have just bought a 2019 i3 42Kwh and have just performed a long range test at 10-17C. I started with 100% battery and a predicted range of 158miles on the GOM. I have driven hybrids now for 12 years and I am aware what a light pedal foot has on economy. So off we set on the 84 mile trip with a mix of motorway (60%) A road (40%) . Outbound heading for the coast there's more negative gradients but it will all level up on the return. As this is a max range test I put the car in Eco PRO and turn off the heating/cooling. I get between 10 - 22Kwh/100Km and a light foot also mean that I see quite a bit of regen. When I arrived at my destination I had a GOM range left of ! 130 Miles (84 + 130) = 214 miles.
    I charge to 100% again and then on the return when I arrived home the GOM said 100 miles so a return range of 184 miles. I expect these ranges to drop by switching to Comfort and adding some heating however even if these settings suck 20 miles of range that's still 194 and 168 miles so taking the worst case 168miles that's very close to what BMW expect this car to achieve and by switching to ECO PRO 180 is also possible for most of the year and for most journeys. Remember my home journey was full of positive gradients to reach the destination at 333m.
    So with this I have confidence this car can easily achieve its 160 mile range as quoted under these temps which in the UK is pretty standard. I am well impressed with this car it drives likes its on rails and accelerates like a rocket. :-)

    Just ordered one from stock over a week ago, new model with £3.5k off with government grant, another £3.3k off through dealer, and 6 years 0% finance. Zappi wall charger being fitted with £800 allowance so I will be able to use solar to charge it at home and most charge points in Scotland are free after £20 annual fee so reckon I will be able to use this all year for virtually nothing. And yes there is storage space up front for the charge cables, bought the the box from BMW on their eBay store and can also use dry bag to keep cables away from moisture. And my car is listed as being supplied with Type 2 charge cable and in any case BMW dealers are selling them on eBay for around £125 mark.

    The i3 efficiency is often overlooked. Another post here covers this, but everyone looking at EV's focus on range and power (for the guys that talked their wife into the Tesla just for that 0-60 in 3 second rush). In fact, battery size is never a free ride, it's still physics. Bigger battery costs more to charge, takes longer, weighs more and makes the car heavier and slower. This in turn cuts range and acceleration from the theoretical gain of the battery kWh alone, plus wears tires faster. The i3 was a "ground-up" design that took weight and battery size into account to optimize range and performance by getting the most from a relatively small battery in light, nimble car. Carbon body, alloy frame, plastic body panels permits smaller batteries, tires, etc., while still giving good performance and decent range.

  • @plugandplayEV

    Limited space, range, and to a lesser extent the lack of Android Auto, make the i3 a no-go for my family. But I'll grant the interior looks excellent and would definitely like to get into one for a play and the driving experience. Purchased used for someone who doesn't carry a lot, the i3 could be a steal.

    In Norway there are chargers everywhere, no one needs a compartment specifically for cables.
    There are plenty of fast chargers as well, privately owned companies have invested in chargers at work and the government has chargers everywhere.
    The issue is not the compartment, the issue is poor battery combined with few options for charging, start there.:>

      The BMW i3 starts at €41.995 The Tesla model 3 standard range is not available yet but will be later this year and will cost €43.500 (estimated). The Standard range plus is available for €48.818

    There actually is no proper lane keeping assist available in the i3. They only offer a traffic jam assist for speeds up to 60 km/h which actually is rather annoying as you need to hold the steering wheel every 7 seconds. And the adaptive cruise control does not work half of the time. If the sun is too low, when it rains, when it snows or sometimes when it simply does not want to work. Unfortunately no comparison to radar based systems. I still like the car as it's quick, nice to drive and quite efficient. And I like the design.
    And of course the charging cables fit perfectly in the frunk. BMW offers a watertight bag which fits in there nicely. However they should have made the compartment waterproof in the first place .

      F G Our planet has far too few rare metals 🤷‍♂️for mass conversion to e-cars - Normal petrol ‼️car is 120 times 🤢 more efficient than e-car - "The only real fuel of the future 💰 is called hydrogen"
      - Jörg Wellnitz, a professor at the Technical University of Ingolstadt with a professorship in Melbourne, drives one himself, but is anything but a fan 💸💸💸 of the concept. On the contrary, according to Wellnitz, the later mandatory switch to e-cars is a big scam that serves only one purpose: the car manufacturers want to use this to calculate the combined emissions of their models 'clean', so as not to have to pay the 💰💸💸💸 billions of fines announced by the EU. The customer is just a side issue. Moreover, an ordinary gasoline car is still 120 x more energy efficient ‼️ than an electric one.
      The extraction of lithium (Chile) and cobalt (central Africa) is already causing extreme environmental damage in these countries, and is also accompanied by child labor. Wellnitz: "If Audi would only build its A4 series electrically, they would have to buy half the world market for cobalt."

    The skiny tires do not improve rolling resistance, it slightly reduces it. However, the skiny tires have a large diameter and that has more impact on reducing RR. These tires are also good for snow, especially since it’s RWD and it’s good it has a bit more weight to the back so it should handle snow pretty well. Larger diameter improves grip as well. But a bit wider tires woul’ve been fun. With these large diameter wheels wider tires would mean a lot more weight. So not sure what’s the best solution. Perhaps a bit smaller and 30%wider or like on the i3s ?!

    You would have to be completely insane to buy one of these new. They deprecate at an unbelievable rate. That is good news if you want a used one. Truecar will give you a good idea as to value.

    • @dave20thmay
      @dave20thmay 5 років тому

      Well that's it then, I'm insane. But at the time I bought my I had to wait for the bigger battery and also could spec all the things that I would need as this was my first car and will be the last one. Things like comfort access I thought a complete waste of money. It is not as if you can wave your foot under the tailgate and it open for you. I can easy feel in my pocket and press the unlock, without needing to look. Also mine was provided with the python cable.

    Thanks, a good review, but not for me, I chose the Kia for bigger range, more standard kit, larger, and not being a BMW.
    Lane keep assist would be a nightmare for a BMW driver as you have to signal when you change lane or the car objects.

    The led headlights on this are eyeball burning. My neighbour has this and they are really annoying lights. When driving behind me I have to turn all mirrors away. No other high powered car even does this, its not just annoying but damgerous how bright they are.

      Oh no too many mistakes for it to be a carwow review she could not even be bothered to tell us that the car is made of carbon fiber-reinforced plastic and aluminium and that is the reason why it cost so much. I mean find a car that is less than 100k with a carbon fibre tub

    I love the i3, but like so many people I’m just not of a fan of that interior... I think the outside looks awesome but the inside in my opinion looks very undesirable and doesn’t match the sporty ness of the car... if they made the interior look a little more like the i8 or even one of the regular gasoline cars like the 3 series it would look great. But that old looking steering wheel and putting the gear shifter up top instead of something more traditional like the i8 is just not working for me and even though the the i8 is not fully electric there are plenty of electric cars with more normal gear shifts...those seats are cool though about the only thing I like about the interior and the Sunroof is a nice touch
