I can attest to this statement. This album was SO HUGE. I feel like because now there are so many places to put music out there - we don't have music that gets as big as some of these albums did. Same can be said of movies and TV. There are, obviously, pros and cons to this.

This is a really deep cut. For an album with lots of singles.... this was not one of them. The groove here is so so strong. and the guitar playing is amazing. I love when the band explodes into the chorus. I think Stewart Copeland wrote this one?

Andy Summers is a badass guitarist. Partly because he has been playing professionally since the late 60's! He's about 10 years older than Sting and Stewart but their chemistry was cool. Andy is 79 and I think he's still at it. This song shows how capable all 3 are at playing jazz! They were, musically, the best band in the world back then. In my opinion.

My interpretation of the song is that the narrator and Miss Gradenko work closely together in the KGB. Despite their training to subvert all emotion, Miss Gradenko is falling for the narrator. She’s dressing more provocatively around him. She’s passing him love notes. She’s revealing her feelings to him. Yet, he’s too dense to pick up on her infatuation. He only sees the changes in her as dangerous anomalies. I’ll bet these lyrics sprouted from a story told to Stewart Copeland by his brother or father. I believe they both worked for “the company “.

LOVE THIS TUNE! Copeland is a BOSS. Probably why he started The Police and recruited Andy Sommers and Sting. This is what a power trio can sound like. Also, the most pleasing phrase to the human ear is not "cellar door." It's "take me now." And Miss Gradenko wrote the note.

Justin. You need to read the novel "1984" and some Soviet history. Everything was grey. People who stood out from the crowd, such as lively Miss Gradenko, were quickly cut down or were disappeared by the KGB. Miss G. Doesn't fit into her uniform... Perhaps her figure is as irrepressible as her character. So she is warned, perhaps by a man who wants her but is afraid to express himself.

Its ok with the album its fine but really the best songs on Synchronicity is Synchronicity I/II Every breath you take, King of Pain, Wrapped around your Finger and Tea in the Sahara. Love those tracks. Btw this was wrote by drummer Stewart Copeland

I've always like this song, even though there are SO many better-known songs off this album.
Someone mentioned albums that represented a particular summer... my mind immediately went to The Cars' self-titled album from 1978. My friends and I listened the heck outta this album during a summer a few years after that. While there aren't many overly complex songs on the album, "Moving in Stereo" is probably one of the most iconic, and cool-to-listen-to-in-headphones songs around.

Always up for a little Russian spy intrigue....as a child of the Cold War. See the movie “Atomic Blonde” for a good feel for that period. Plus Scarlet Johansson 😍
Decent song but sooo many great Police songs like King of Pain, Every Breath You Take, Syncronicity II (“Many miles away something crawls from the slime in a dark Scottish lake” ). And Sting’s solo work. It just got better and better.
The philosophy of Syncronicity is interesting...the interconnectedness of all things working in unison...very Zen.
Ps, On a visit to Jamaica in 82, I bought a bag of ganja from a little schoolboy (British shorts, white shirt) right off the plane. Don’t remember much of that week except crashing a rental motorcycle into some kind of banana plantation.

This is such a great show of musicianship, an absolute killer song, this one along with "Mother" are completely far out from the mood of the album. Andy Summer is a genius, his solo is brilliant and you can hear the Fripp influence, before synchronicity Summers did a couple of records with Robert Fripp which are unique.

An interesting deep cut (as I believe *they* call non-single tracks now). I'm glad you didn't pick Mother.
Someone once described Copeland's playing on this track as a "lobster beat". It's a tasty rhythm. He isn't a boring drummer.
The lyrics might have something to do with espionage. Possibly inspired by Stewart's brother Miles, who used to be in the CIA.
Since you graciously asked, I'll repeat my requests re: 80s canon from a while back:
The Blue Nile: Tinseltown In The Rain
    Prefab Sprout: Bonny
    The Associates: Club Country
Hey, fellow JustJPers, can I get a hand here? Come on. You know these songs.

"I'm glad you didn't pick Mother." --- made me laugh. I can't help but wonder if Andy Summers was deliberately trying to sabotage the album with that track, knowing how at odds they all were with each other at the time. I'm not sure, but it kind of sounds like he might be the only member of the band playing on the track.

I LOVE this song... it's one of my three favorites off this album (the others being Synchronicity I and Synchronicity II). It's funny that you mention the vocals being the only thing you didn't like... I never really thought about it before, but unlike most of the songs on this album, Sting didn't write this one (Stuart did), so I wonder if Sting didn't give it his best because it wasn't his song and it felt more like an obligation to him. Also for what it's worth, there was a *tremendous* amount of animosity between all three members of the band at this time, and they broke up after not long afterwards. Anyway, really astute observations and analysis all around. Cheers man.

@JustJP Thank you for reacting to my to song choice, another meticulous analysis, very enjoyable. The guitar part takes me back to when I was learning to play and he plays the chord changes here in individual notes arpeggio style. Interesting dissection of the lyrics, I was in high school when this album released, the Cold War was on, at the time I imagined this song was about the trials of a political dissident. I'm sorry it's a brief song.

    That was pretty interesting.
That's cool to hear your background growing up with Jamaican dance hall. I can hear it, but I wouldn't have known if it was just an accenting or if they really incorporated the form. Makes me think the Pixies were probably influenced some by the Police.
That's also cool thinking about the aesthetics of words like that. As you were talking about that I swallowed an olive by accident, and I thought, hey, that's a nice phrase, "swallowed an olive."
I'm thinking I'll make my next recommendation to give some love to a new song: Esperanza Spalding "To Tide Us Over (mouth)".

So this is my 126th listen to this track after my first way back in 83 when I heard it on cassette. I agree 100 percent to this review and definitely Stings voice is distant in the mix. Whether this is for artistic expression or merely as Stuart Copeland, the drummer and founder of the group, said in an interview that Sting didn't want to lend his vocals to the track since he didn't like it and added to that it was written by Stuart...who knows. However on this listen I sense a eerie reverse reverb on the vocals giving the song a sinister vibe plus some of arrangements seem inverted in some way. The guitar, for example sounds like its being played backwards. The overall reggae and ska undertones, which really is a disguised rip off of the real reggae and ska bands around that time lends an awkward juxtaposition to the setting and subject matter. I always think of it as a good filler track and prelude to Synchronicity II.

My initial feeling for the song was, oooh, why “that “ song, so many great songs on the album but, as John explained, it was a guitar song... I see it totally different now. I enjoyed it and wished it wasn’t so short. I see now, it is a tight compact intricate little song and I agree about the vocals but, they’re growing on me. Stuart has a different song style and phrasing, drummer... and a bit atonal but I miss the big P as a working band so much I need to listen harder to all of their songs like this one that didn’t really care for before. So, John, good one, makes me want to try and learn it too. Good on ya mate. Jamaican Justin Justice... sweet. Explains a lot... great analysis as ever.

Sorry to say but he has very little idea about the song. There are some classic arpeggios guitar riffs by one of the masters Mr. Andy Summers. These riffs give you east european vibes, not jamaican. The song is all about espionage when the cold war was on its peak. Sometimes reminds me of a movie called the "The Russia House".

You sort of got the meaning, but you're too young to see it through the "cold war" prism that colored Western perceptions of the world in the early 80's. The fictional political meeting clearly happened somewhere on the other side of the Iron Curtain. Our assumption was that in the Eastern Block, staid conformity was demanded, and individualism wasn't just frowned upon, but aggressively repressed. You did not want to stand out. "Letting your feelings show" or looking "too alive" in your uniform could bring unwanted scrutiny, scrutiny you really didn't want if you were passing information about the Directorate to the West. Yes, Miss Grandenko has turned against the communist regime and is cooperating with the Americans or the Brits.
The anti-communist espionage theme of this song makes even more sense when you consider that it was written by Stewart Copeland, who is the son of one of the founding members of the CIA and, at least when it comes to Capitalism vs Communism, leans pretty far to the political right for a rock star.
