Great Video.
45- It's actually a tail slate. Second sticks would be if you were to clap right after you noticed the 1st one wasn't good enough.
Yes your super right, we learned to call it end board, that's what it should have been. Thanks for telling us about it, we will add a title to correct it.
There's different terminology for British filmmakers, Slick.
A ridiculous amount of info that saved me going through 50 different tutorials! Love the enthusiasm and knowledge! Thank you!
No problem, Justin!
Another tip, record the "silent" audio from the room or place because you can use it as background in case you have problems with the enviromental noise of a dialogue
Room tone, of course! (Will keep a note of this for the next 100)
yep yep!
That's a lot, might have to rewatch this in order to catch some missed ones.
We had to rewatch it a few times to see if we missed any to.
glad you made the film riot reference. ☺️. . Few other great examples would be aputure , andyax ,griptips, slanted lens, shotbinder , rocketjump film school, lights film school
Great list!
Dating your batteries was a great tip; especially, if buying cheap batteries in sets. Once one goes out, others in that set may be next.
Also helps when we are swapping and chucking batteries to each other (Pass the number 2! Number 1 is dead)
Tip 101 wear no stripes t shirt which will give moire effect.
Ahh great tip!
Love the tips. The tape tip alone is one of those "mack yourself in the forehead" tips.
This channel is still so underrated. Great video tho!
Thank you, guys! Your channel light a fire in my heart and filled it with inspiration. NICE!
That's awesome!
In so such short time, i have more knowledge gained with this video than hundreds of other videos with half hour content! THANK YOU!
That's great to hear! Thanks :D glad we can help. Next time we compile another 100 tips, we will be sure to make another video :)
100 Filmmaking tricks:
**50 - Make Films**
Grand salute
...we might have stretched a few haha
This is a wealth of knowledge
No problem!
This was super great! Glad to have found your channel! Thanks
Welcome to the channel Matthew!
Awesome! Thanks for sharing all the great tips. 👍
No problem Steve!
2:31 I was using Shot Lister!! (probably)
I know you will be using Shot Lister, you're a professional. It's Kristian who I am pointing the finger at haha!
Hey now, let's not point fingers. I was probably just showing Liam some of your wicked videos in the break to help his performance!
Dude your voice is like Luke! I am Your filmmaker :O
Had to stop editing our converstation for this.
Editing here too! Snap!
We have achieved a new level of filmmaking enlightenment
# 7 lol Always find an excuse to make your gear look more professional! Even if that just means using a lens hood! XD
7:34 BRILLIANT!
Good job. I have a couple of others we definitely always emphasize. 101 when connecting any cable connect first to the least expensive piece of equipment. 102 always turn around first in the direction you want to go, never back up on set. It will save your equipment from being knocked over.
Ahh great stuff! We'll add this to the next 100
I just started a project with my phone and a gimbal, look for tips and i found this guy. I wish one day i will reach this level
Great to hear you have started a project. Just keep making stuff and there is no level you can't reach.
This is a great video dude. Congratulations.Lets subscribe
Cheers JR!
I like most of the tips in this video, but I couldn’t disagree with tip 22 more - some of the best scenes in movie history consist of nothing but people sitting/standing and talking, (The Master, Pulp Fiction, In Bruges, and many more) other than that - this was a really well made video :-)
True! But they are all surrounded by scenes of people doing things. I think our tip is to prevent new filmmakers from just creating films with heavy dialogue and not a lot of action or drama.
It's TRUE but you should still give your actor something to DO during the scene(drive the car, entertain the hitman, get to the site of the hit, intimidate the hit and eat the cheeseburger.) That's the 2nd scene in PF. Great material, great dialogue and great subtext allow for the most subtle moments to become brilliant, it starts with the material. Make that the best you can and then you can tell your actor to do something as simple as play with a pencil while they deliver their lines and all of the sudden the scene comes to life.
You can get away with this if you have amazing dialogue but other than that it’s best to have them moving
I've started to do videos of my solo shows (theater touring has been complicated since COVID). I wish I'd seen this sooner. Any special advice for the one-man operation?
Great video :)! GET A SLIDER, next, DONT OVERUSE SLIDERs. 100%
This was GOLD. Thank you!!
Cheers!
And make sure when you buy any stuff, try to buy those with good weather sealing if available and affordable. You never know what kind of environment your gears will go through. :)
Ahh great tip! I'll add it to the list.
7:20 How did you get Tom Holland to act in this video? 🤣
We blew our budget on him!
amazing video, subbed
Definetly spraypainting my lens caps soon!
Not to be picky because this is a great vid but don't listen to tip 15. Just go for the effect you want to create; shallow depth of field can be a good thing
In focus and deep is better than shallow and out of focus, that's all we are saying. We love sexy shallow dof!
Great thank you!
No problem!
YOOOOOO THIS VIDEO BANGED
Is that you Barry!?
Love it guys! I´ll start showing this video to people whenever I recommend your channel now :D
Awesome! We're making this the new channel trailer now.
That works too :D
Lemme just re watch this daily for the next 2 weeks
Awesome tips, thank you! Immediately subscribed!
I'm also an aspiring filmmaker/creator..
No problem, hope they help, Leon!
Loved it! Awesome pro-level tips and a tonne of them...well beyond other filming vids I have watched! Thank you
3:23 Chrisitan Bale did this for Empire of the Sun
number 2 ? how do you get story boards of something that isnt filmed yet, if your saying take pictures of it
You can do this by testing shooting the film before the actual shooting day with barebones equipment on location/set. We go into a little more detail in this video here: ua-cam.com/video/ExnH2KJSJoo/v-deo.html
Fantastic video with clear concise tips. Shame we didn't apply any of these to our movie remakes in this weeks challenge! Hopefully you'll see an improvement from us in the coming weeks as we make use of these. Thank you.
No problem! Which video of yours would you suggest we watch first?
@@TheFilmLook I recommend the Movie Remake challenge, and if you like what we do take a look at any of the other challenges. Thanks for taking an interest :-) We're really new on our UA-cam journey so welcome any feedback.
I'll share your video with the rest of the Bandits on our weekly call so we can all up our game! Just getting everyone to film in Landscape is an ongoing battle! Haha 😂
Great video, think a few tips could have been used here, but very funny!
@@pablobison922 Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed watching us.
Your challenge attempts were so great *because* they were so bad. Love your Bandits channel. New subscriber here 👈
Tip number 73 is the most valuable one
You can use the free version (old version) of Celtx to create storyboards. You have basic shapes like people, lights, cameras, doors, furniture etc. Just drag and drop to the desired location. If you want a great screenwriting program, download Trelby. It's free and open source, simple and straightforward :)
Cool. We didn't know about celtx for storyboards and Trelby for screenwriting. We have recently been using Scrivener for screenwriting and organisation. It costs but definitely worth the money.
@@TheFilmLook I don't think beginner screenwriters and hobbyists should spend money on such a program. That's why Trelby is great, it has all of what you need to write a script or play and it's completely free. Ideal for students and anyone else that isn't getting paid for what he's writing.
And I spent money in college why? I learned so much from this just while eating my cereal. Thank you!
What kinda cereal?
The Film Look Kashi Peanut Butter Crunch ♥️👍
Fantastic advice Rob & Rich, really awesome little list to see!
Cheers Max!
Love how "low budget" usually means having video, audio, lights, furniture, props, actors, a film crew, expertise, knowledge, locations, techniques and skills, and more importantly: still watch Riot Films.
I suppose when you considering film budgets are usually in excess of $200 million, low budget can be anywhere between $100,000 and $5m. What we do is more considered a micro budget.
As I am from the North East, (Durham) I feel like you missed a trick with the make and could of called the channel the film Luke. Though not sure if many outside of the NE would get.. I also was always told to say Striking on film set and if you crossing the camera you have to say crossing frame - obviously never do this whilst recording. Getting some decent boots and clothes water proofs are a need sometimes and layers. I've always called clapping at the end an end slate. Which You already have seen. so just ignore me. Othwise a fantastic video seen 2 and was an instant subscriber looking forward to more content
At first I found it very hard to believe that James Veitch would be giving us tips on filmmaking.
Hahaaa! Amazing.
Thanks James. ;)
Great
The American is truly worth watching. Very underrated
"If you have a cheap plastic tripod.. ??? what couldn't understand what you said.. Get rid of it ????
Which number was this? I skimmed through, but can't find it.
I've been in the film business for 40 years and a film teacher for ten years. I agree with 99% of the advice he gives. As noted, however, it is a tail slate. Second sticks in another thing. Not a big deal. As a teacher I wish I could talk as fast as this guy!
Thanks :) Yeah that is something we need to update for the next 100 tip video.
Thnx mate imma bout to jump to film school soon i wanna be film director and i want from you guys to do a video how to make a mid/high budget feature movie and how to show your feature movie in theatres regards from albania bro underrated channel
Great to hear from you Kri :D once we start making mid/high budget features, we will let you know. At the moment, they are a bit out of our reach!
The Film Look gotcha mate aight
Guys this is awesome ! Thanks you so much for all these handy tips !
Cheers Hazy!
bravo, this was very helpful, thank you
That was 100 awesome tips! Thanks for the video guys :-)
Thanks for continuing to tune in Vegard!
I've got one, always have a plan B to get a shot. I had my studio mic die on my onset of a corporate film and I managed to borrow one that they had.
Love it! Plan B, of course!
Hey bro , I have Rode NTG3 Mic ( need phantom power ) , which sound recorder should I go for which has great battery backup , so that I can use it with ntg3 for long time . my budget options are limited though - Zoom h5 , Zoom h6 , Zoom h4n pro , tascam Dr 40 , Tascam DR60 mark ii OR any other in same price range ..... Love ur videos 😍😍😍😍
We have the Tascam DR70d and would recommend it. You can use USB power banks for extra battery life which is great for long shoots. As the Rode NTG3 requires phantom power, your audio recorder will run out of juice a lot quicker, so an extra few battery banks in your sound kit will do the job.
great stuff.
Cheers Dan!
I don't think De Niro & Pacino agress with tip 22.
Just look at Heat.
You are right, there are long moments of conversations. But they are set between the action scenes. Our tip was to help prevent new filmmakers from going straight to a conversation scene for the whole film. Otherwise it may as well be radio drama.
The Film Look The brilliant My Dinner With Andre may disagree.
Awesome, awesome video!! I loved this. Subscribed!!!!! :D
Thanks :)
I didn't get #92: "Understand that people will not show up or drop you in it (?) in the last minute."
Meaning: arrange all the help you need well in advance?
Certainly so! And also be prepared for people to drop out and double up on some roles.
Thanks loads I needed this I wish I could afford half of this, but hey use what you got am I right
Definitely, use what you've got and work up to the thing you can not afford right now, and keep shooting.
Really good video! Greetings from Argentina!
Welcome!
BRILLIANT!
I LOVE IT!
Thanks for likeing
I get helpfull this vidio
Awesome.
Hope it helps!
#15 is the stuff.
Great video
Awesome video but still, i feel like it's way past low budget.
Not all 100 tips are low budget, but hopefully they are worth knowing.
thank you bro
#100 is the best and most important
What name of the thing that you use to write the scene, shot, take with marker pen on minute 1:02 ?
That is a clapper board. We will have a video coming at some point of how to use one.
7:41 What tripod is that please?
great video, watch it my once ,low budget filmmakers
Film Riot is more of a parody channel. They have some nice tips, especially in their older videos...but there are far better channels out there.
I wouldn't say they are a parody channel, they have fun, but have some really detailed information. I can see that it's not for everyone. 10 years of content is very impressive.
@@TheFilmLook And I agree with you, but I just don't like their jokes and the amount of humour they use to make their videos fun and likeable. Perhaps it's just me...I've been criticized by countless friends because I lack a sense of humour altogether :P
I do get that, sometimes you just want the tips and facts about what they are talking about. We try to find the balance with ours videos, I don't think we are funny enough to pull of some of the things they do.
Great video, guys! Definitely one to watch a few times! (can't hear tip 87: lightweight tripod... do what?)
Thanks for watching John! Tip 87 is, if you have a lightweight tripod, do the opposite of tip 86.
aha, "do it the other way" (the subtitles said: "do it liver will"(?))
Haha just updated the CCs. They were on auto-mode, so I've went in and wrote them out properly.
First other film channel to mention film riot. They're pretty good tbh
4:25 what's that?
Pre-lining a script! We talk about it in detail in this video: ua-cam.com/video/0KvznANtZgM/v-deo.html
Sorry but don’t follow tip 15
Probs not the best example we showed, sorry. It's better to shoot at a higher f/stop in order to keep your subject in focus, than to shoot super shallow and overshoot focus.
Great tips. Thanks!
No problem!
Love the video! Could you make a video going really in-depth into audio recording or do you know any videos that go into the subject? Really want to get great at audio recording, editing, and mixing.
We got you covered! Here's an 8 part series and some extras: ua-cam.com/video/NzmDV5Z9c_o/v-deo.html
Wow! Awesome!! Thanks!!
A pair of isolation headphones, so you hear exactly what the mic is picking up like the refrigerator compressor kicking on and off, throwing off continuity.
Great Job! Sensational How To!!! congrats!!!
Cheers!
Amazing thanks!
Thank you so much
I watched them all. And all were useful. When turning on lights, I've heard the term, 'striking' or something to that affect. Excellent job.
Striking! Certainly. Great tip!
it took me a second to get use to the Scottish accent; but the tips where great!
North-east English, but pretty close to Scotland!
Okay, I stand corrected! Thanks again for the tips!
I adore you
I love tip 7 about making your kit look professional, right after tip 6 about using a peg and baking paper to diffuse your lighting :)
I wish I would have started off watching this video. Gonna be my first suggestion if anyone asks me in the future.
Awesome! Glad you like it :D
This is the most helpful video I’ve ever seen in my life. Thank you
No problem!
#15 is kinda stupid. It depends on the situation and shot. I don't understand why you'd shoot a close up of someone talking at F/8
The video it refers to has a longer explanation. If the actor is moving in and out of the depth of field, rocking forward and back, overshooting focus looks a lot worse than just shooting it deep. Hope this helps clear this up.
2:09 unless you're Quentin Tarantino
True.
Good video...
Glad you liked it!
I can't buy a Mic am I all right
If you can't buy a mic, your phone is the next best option. Pop it on a selfie-stick or tape it to a broom and record your audio with it. It's still better than on-camera audio.
cmon guys, you are here not to shot movie but for watching tutorials, see ya at the next video
Ah, all of this as a pdf or book would be nice!
That's a good idea. We will have a look into it.
@@TheFilmLook Oh, I didn't expect anyone to see that. That's fantastic!!!
Very helpful thank you
No problem, Cory, hope they help!
wow! I loved it, so inspiring :)
wow so much info in 9 minutes! thank you!
