Masterpiece Devastator is the was to go. I wouldn't waste my time a/o money on anything other than masterpiece, because MP is [by far] the most G1 show accurate, & that's the most important, for me
most show accurate? someone needs to check out Magic Square devastator :D its legend scale and pretty much outclass the masterpiece in cartoon accuracy, same for Bruticus and Menasor...

Does the upgrade kit make it taller? If so, how tall is it now?
a tiny bit yes... maybe 1 or 2 cm taller... the arms are longer too by about 2cm
