    Hey! Just wanted to mention here that I absolutely love and respect the work of the custom firmware development teams out there. Their desire to make these devices even better and their willingness to do so for free or with community donations is a real highlight of the scene as a whole. Where I start to bristle is when it becomes an expectation that they'll do that work to pick up the slack when a device launches in a rough state.
    And to be clear: I also respect the work of these manufactuers in a big way. The hardware they produce is fantastic and has brought me literally hundreds of hours of joy over the years, but I also think it's worth holding them to a higher standard to make sure the product is solid - on the software end as well - when asking people to purchase it.

      I have a Miyoo Mini and 2x MM Plus BECAUSE of Onion OS. I keep going back to these. Without Onion I would be on my Anbernic RG whatever XX. So yeah, the custom firmware is SO important!

    I’m definitely down for more handheld video reviews! I also really enjoy the more casual approach you’re taking (as with all of your videos). A retro handheld review being less in the weeds of technical analysis and focusing more on how well devices perform from practical, daily use perspective is nice. This was a great companion to my morning coffee!

    Just to make you feel better, I've been into these handhelds since around 2020 as well, and it was coincidentally only last week that I read the "The battery may explode in the fire" line for the first time (on the XXSP) as well. Immediately showed my wife, and we both got a good chuckle.

    • @RockYoMomsWorld

      Every reviewer I’ve watched has misunderstood what that warning means. All it’s saying is if your battery catches fire, it may explode. In other words, don’t put your handheld/battery in a fire. Every battery has this warning on it, hell even cans of compressed gas have it

    • @BlueMega
      @BlueMega 10 днів тому

      @@RockYoMomsWorld I'm guessing English isn't your native language? To clarify, we all understand what they mean ("Don't burn the battery/expose it to heat)." It's funny in this context because the poor English phrases it like the fire is already a foregone conclusion if you use the wrong charger, made funnier because these devices are known for exploding when overcharged.

    • @RockYoMomsWorld
      @RockYoMomsWorld 9 днів тому

      @@BlueMega English is my native language lol. This guy and a few others have either implied or straight up said that they interpreted that warning to mean the device may spontaneously combust when charging

      @@RockYoMomsWorld This is borderline not worth engaging with, but you caught me when I'm bored at work so I'll give you a genuine breakdown: There have been posts all over reddit/social media about people getting spicy pillows from using an incorrect charger. It is a documented thing that happens. The back of the device says (word-for-word Engrish): "Only can use certified charger." Take all of this in context. You're acting like people are misreading the back of the device and that's where this is coming from lol. The device says don't do it. Social media shows people with exploded batteries after doing it. And then the next line is "The battery may explode in the fire," which makes it hilarious. That's what this reviewer and others are reacting to. Context. It matters.

      You know you can toggle between dpad and analog right? Most cfw allows this feature also you can map the dpad in retroarch to the analog stick and play analog centric games but yea having it there is much better. I finished ocarina of time and majoras mask on my 35xxsp and didnt affect game play by toggling back and forth in my opinion.

    It's so great you made this review cause this is the first non-nintendo handheld I've actually thought of purchasing. I'm a DS girlie, so I like the clamshell design and it needs to come in some cute colors (I have the rosegold ds, and the burgundy dsi xl), so the Miyoo Flip looked perfect for me. However, idk anything about hardware/software, so I need to buy a device that is easy to use. I'll see if in around 6 months someone comes up with a software solution that is easy for users like me. If so, I'll purchase it, cause I've never played non-nintendo games and I really wanna do that finally :). If you could do an update video about this one day, that'd be awesome! Thanks again.

    At this point, is the cycle of release then improvement via custom firmware a feature of these devices and not a bug? Your points about out-of-the-box problems are all well taken, but I would say that these devices are not locked down products like something from Nintendo, Sony, or Microsoft. The customizability is kind of a selling point. Agreed that it means retro handhelds are and are likely to remain a niche, but I don’t know if I want them to be so good and popular out of the box that they invite scrutiny.

    • @itswavelengths
      @itswavelengths  12 днів тому +3

      this is a good point! personally i feel like it’s not unreasonable to have a “best of all worlds” situation with these devices. imagine how successful any of these companies would be if the out of the box experience was totally uncompromised and had great firmware, but was also customizable and allowed for CFW.
      i don’t think we’re that far off, honestly. even miyoo’s stock OS is pretty close to being solid from a user interface perspective, it’s the emulation tweaking that’s holding it back in a big way.

      Be careful, the sp hinge is a lot worse than the flip. I’ve seen more broken sp hinges than I can count, the only thing “bad” about the flips is it’s loud(which only means the hinge has prominent detents, and will be remain sturdy over time. The 3ds has this loud clicky hinge as well, and it’s been fine for over a decade)

    It's a neat doodad. It's easy to forget that when the Miyoo Mini was launched the software was VERY half baked. It didn't become a 'must buy' doodad until we got good software. The Flip may be the same, but I think it has potential to be even better because of the firmware potential on that chipset. If you want the Flip, get it knowing the potential for CFW and the limitations of stock OS. Telling someone to just buy something else that (a) they didn't want and (b) knowing that whatever software issues might be resolved seems disrespectful of someone's money. Not everyone can buy a dozen of these devices that do the exact same thing.

  • @millyawns
    @millyawns 12 днів тому +3

    You keep saying Miyoo is relying on the free labor of fans. I don't think that's the case. Miyoo reached out to developers and sent them devices early, from what I believe no charge. They've already confirmed they are working on the OS and it's on the way. I think the words against Miyoo are unwarranted here since they are at least meeting the developers halfway.

    • @itswavelengths
      @itswavelengths  12 днів тому +11

      i totally get where you’re coming from, but when these developers make better custom firmware and make the flip worth buying, miyoo is the only one making money. the developers aren’t seeing a share of that revenue unless they’re running their own funding through something like patreon despite it being their work that pushed the device into “must-buy” territory.
      i think if CFW developers are doing this of their own volition because they have a passion for it or because they’re supported financially by the community, that’s great. but when miyoo sends them units in advance with a busted operating system, there’s a bit of a “we made this, you fix it, we get all the money” vibe.

    • @RockYoMomsWorld
      @RockYoMomsWorld 10 днів тому +2

      The devs are not being paid for developing their CFW, they are doing it because they like a certain device and like developing things; but nonetheless they are doing it for free. Therefore miyoo is relying on free labor, just because they sent the devs a $70 handheld doesn’t mean it’s not free, devs probably put in a couple hundred hours minimum developing a CFW, that would factor out to like 50 cents per hour, and even that’s being extremely generous, which is just about free. If Miyoo were to pay the devs an actual percentage of units sold, or even an hourly rate it would be a different conversation. But they don’t do that, and it’s 100% free labor

      At launch, all Anbernics have subpar firmware. They rely on the community just as much as miyoo. All of these companies do. Powkiddy releases their newer devices with ArkOS. It plays right out of the box in most cases. I agree with you about the Flip on many levels too. The hardware is superior to the XXSP in almost every way. I have a yellow and a white Flip. The white has the better build quality in my opinion. Seems like the plastic is higher grade. The yellow feels good too though. Just a little cheaper. I recommend people get the Flip now so you'll be ready for custom firmware when it's ready. Also if you're looking for a more accurate clone of the original SP. But if you enjoy a larger device and don't mind the clicky buttons, go with the XXSP. It's a great device with great fully developed custom firmware from the community. My issue is I'd rather use something comfortable and pocketable with sticks and a little more power than something that's only great feature is the firmware. For me the XXSP never took off because of the size but mostly, because of those damn buttons. Good review. Subscribed!

      @@Papabears_2nd_rate_artThis was my one issue with this otherwise well thought out review. He counts Anbernic having custom firmware options as a plus, but counts it as a point against Miyoo even though they actively encourage it. They sent a free dev unit to the GammaOS dev who for example, charges a small fee to access his work. It doesn’t seem to me like anyone is getting screwed here and it’s actually a more reliable system for expecting CFW then Anbernic’s strategy.
