They keep it a secret between them and vow to do it until the very end, but Liu Sang, a character with gifted hearing finds out and reveals it to everyone as WuXie is coughing up blood (epi16 season 1). Aha, I understand, it’s covered more in the novel: Reboot: the sound of the thunder. They cut a lot out from the drama itself, but it’s implied and mentioned by the both actors in various interviews etc.
