First off, let me say your videos are always created with such high production value and they're super enjoyable to watch. This game has HUGE potential! I love the concept and the game mechanics look really smooth and fun. You should keep at it. Thanks for sharing!
Brilliant. Kudos on that spear jump I was convinced the spear was bending until I saw this :)
Another idea: circular switches you have to jump and jam your spear into. Your weight then turns the switch and activates it. It could even be on a timer, slowly winding back again after you've released.
How about, if you are running at full speed, jamming the spear into the ground in front of you lets you do a long horizontal jump? Kind of like a pole vault, but with more forward momentum.
Your comment is bring back some repressed memories involving a man and a bucket, no clue why though...
You should expand on this and create a full product to sell, the concept of using the spear as a tool for many things is refreshing among platformers. Add some enemies, interesting dynamic levels, and you've got a hit. I would buy this in a slice.
I would back the heck out of a Kickstarter for this. Selfishly I want you to succeed commercially with a game so you can return with wisdom from the top of Mt. Steam.
Haha, if you make that a full game I'll buy it for sure, that's a promise! ^_^
This is awesome! Also, I think the video length was perfect.
wow... this is pretty impressive. If you could make some kind of hard as balls celeste type platformer with this concept you could really be onto something.
Lovely breakdown of the design in the mechanics used.
10:49 that's a beautiful spike-placeholder sprite. (At least I assume they're spikes)
The spear mechanic is awesome man!
I mean... twin stick is a thing. You’d have to use triggers for throw/strike/jump/run (if there is a run button), but it could work well.
EDIT: Perhaps:
Lstick: movement left/right/jump
Rstick: spear controls
L/ZL (or LT/L2): jump
ZR (or RT/R2): stab spear
R: throw spear
I LOVE your work and I inspire to be to be as good as you one day
looks really good mate
Hi It’s Tyler I was at the Forum Today, as of 27th February 2018, Great Vid
I'm really interested in this! I hope to see more. :)
Found this accidentally on twitter. What a cool concept.
I really enjoyed playing this game even thlough I couldnt get all the stars
One question. Do you use liveGM extension?
That movement glitch looks fun
Hi just completed your first tutorial on 1.4. Just checking if you were still active and you are. Saw your game on steam. Question: How do you stay motivated and is there any limits to what you can create with game maker? also 1.4 or 2.0. Does game maker have an native net code functions included in the IDE?
I wish i can dev like you. So cool!
great explain & work!
Is this game inspired by the Pokio enemy in Super Mario Odyssey?
way to go my guy
This game actually looks pretty fun.
Why not apply the same momentum system you’ve got going on the spear-jump to the standard embedded spear jump to a lesser extent in order to universalize that sensation of elasticity in regards to spear jumping? I think that kind of unity in mechanics would add a lot of polish to this game. It looks like a lot of fun thusfar. Keep it up.
Thanks for showing us how to do the wobble. Love it.
And what's the room size you used for the game?
View* not room
Shaun Spalding thanks ;)
I was wondering if you'd make a video explaining view sizes and aspect ratios even though pixelated pope has a great tutorial about that, but i'd like to hear what you have to say about all of that
I would seriously love for this to be a full game
I have question.
You remember all of codes when you start creating or before you wrote them on paper or whatever?
Damn wish this was my idea... Love the multi use spear mechanic
can't wait to play it
If you have a character with a similar mechanic (although mine has a pickaxe that it uses to swing around) is it actually better to make the tool a separate object from the player?
I think the old way of spear handling could be a cool upgrade, like some sort of "Shinespark" for the late-game.
Can you please make a full tutorial of how you made this i would love that
More these videos!
It would be cool if the spear picked up collectibles (besides stars) and also flip a switch or something. Oh, I just saw the part where you talked about that
How did you create the GMS background at the end of your video when you're showing credits? Looks dope!
Can you show how to make that kind of games . i am trying to make that kind of game but i can't
Genius
thank you for gamemaker video
Thanks
Hey Shaun, have you ever considered making a tutorial on enemy AI for the platformer series?
Oh god, getting real close to 100K Shaun.
Amazing.
I WANT PLAY THIS GAMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMEEEEEEEEEEEE
This is so cool.
It reminds me of Celeste.
Thanks for sharing, I need to get that wave script. :)
Is this inspired by Getting Over It?
U could make it so that the player faces towards her spear but not when she’s running
WOW!
could you release the source code on youtube? Cheers
The player looks like Madeline from Celeste just finished the whole game without dying in record time
She's a dragoon
cool
Текстурок мало, мог бы свет сделать 😁
Hey, Shaun if you need a level designer ask me because I'd like to help you make the game a full game instead of a 48 hour Jam game. That is if you want to continue development on this game.
tell gamemaker can u make me a copy of full version of gamemaker 2 free
I love the spinning spear "happy accident". Thanks for making this video Shaun.
