I had the opportunity to jump seat on two different chartered BAC-111s in the late 90s. The thing I most remember from the instrument cluster was the odometer-looking pounds of fuel remaining gauge. Even at idle, it was clicking down at a steady pace. Gotta love those noisy and thirsty old Speys!
I only flew on a BAC One-Eleven once. That was about 1986 and it was aboard one of Britt Airways 1-11s on a flight from Chicago (ORD) to Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Wonderful cockpit video of a flight on one of these lesser-known jetliners. Thanks for sharing!
This plane was my first ever flight, from Manchester to Ibiza in June 1988. It didn't mean a great deal to me at the time but on reflection, it does now.
I used to travel aboard BAC1-11's quite a bit. I was lucky enough to get to travel in the F/O's seat on one trip while he had his lunch in my seat. That would never happen nowadays.
Northrop Grumman has operations adjacent to BWI airport in Baltimore, Maryland and flies two modified BAC 1-11’s as research aircraft. I saw one depart from 33L and roar overhead recently. Probably the loudest non-military plane I’ve heard, surpassing the older Delta MD80/88’s on takeoff. It's a screamer!
I've seen that One-Eleven fuselage and even stopped along the Northwest Illinois Tollway (I-90) to take a photo of it. Unfortunately, it's no longer there and has probably been scrapped.
English all the way, exacly. Not that fat, even it was nicknamed the piglet. Sold to Romania in the 80s when it was all but dead, best deal UK aviation ever made. Solid platform though, exquisite engeneering. At the time it only needed quieter engines and a glass cockpit. Which could not be done in Romania under communist regime.
General Contractors British owned and designed, but in later years Romania bought the licence to build them (I once flew on the Tarim BAC111, delayed 3 hours so the cabin crew were serving whiskey in tumblers before departure!) Much like the situation with Renault 11 they bought the licence to build them in Romania and rebadged it as Dacia.
I flew Miami San Jose CR ,San Jose to El Dorado Bogota ,Colombia in to Maracaibo Vzla in a LACSA Bac 1-11 ,and it's a fine Aircraft. Solid as a Jaguar.
flew in to London Gatwick from Stockholm Arlanda airport early July 1977 with Caledonian airways had my first wonderful stay in England as a language student..anyways its sad that its not allowed to fly anymore
Only if you put the wrong size screw. See British Airways Flight 5390. There are a few documentaries here on you tube about that particular flight and they are worth a watch. It's an almost unbelievable story.
Me encanta ese ruido. Me hace acordar cuando era chico. Austral tenía 111. Córdoba-Aeroparque años 80 .. que hermoso avión
My first flight of my life was with BA, Super 1-11, from DUS to TXL in 1980.

Will never forget my first flight, G-ATPL British Eagle LHR - Pisa 17.4.68, and the visit to the cockpit en route...
BAC1-11...an instrument to convert fuel to noise!
(CapnJim)
Got that right!
Even the 111s with hush kits are still loud!

Found a abandoned one in
16N503 Powers Rd
Pingree Grove, IL 60136

A typical English aircraft of the era-noisy, smoky and fat looking. In other words, classic.
As far as i remember this is an ROMANIAN Aircraft

I flew Miami San Jose CR ,San Jose to El Dorado Bogota ,Colombia in to Maracaibo Vzla in a LACSA Bac 1-11 ,and it's a fine Aircraft.
Solid as a Jaguar.
