The proton gun has a popping mechanism but it's not activated by the front grip.It is actually a linkage mechanism like on an automatic switch blade if you watch the elevator scene dan Ackroyd doesn't twist the grip. It's actually a lever cleverly discussed like a green wire by the trigger box where the intensify momentary switch goes and where the activate button for the pack lights go. It is NOT a spring loaded mechanism

He never said that the barrel extension is activated by by twisting the front grip.
