On the site of Constanta stood the city of Tomy - an ancient Greek colony on the Black Sea, founded around 500 BC. e. for trade.
In 29 B.C. e. the region was taken over by the Romans. In the year 8, the poet Ovid was exiled here by Augustus, who died here 8 years later. In Constanta, on Ovid Square (Piaţa Ovidiu), there is now a monument to the poet. The city was later renamed Constantiana in honor of Constantia, the half-sister of Constantine the Great (274-337).
