- Before he was the wicked Doctor Smith, Jonathan Harris was a smart Diamond Theif In this 1958 special. Starring the Great Lou Costello In One of his solo appearance's Without Close friend and Partner Bud Abbott. ( I hope you enjoy it.)
This is the first time I’ve seen Costello in a comedy sketch WITHOUT Abbott.
I always wondered what Dr. Smith did before he was lost in space. A crime boss! LOL
From 1958 to 2018, just 60 years to look back over half a century ago. But LOU COSTELLO is still my favorite comedian and god I wish he was still alive to reach his 💯 birthday in 2006. LOU, I hope to see you after my life is over in the near future.
Jack Benny is another such comedic legend!
Wow, I never knew Jonathan Harris guest starred in any films with Lou Costello. That's very impressive for his credits Lou being such a comedy legend with Bud Abbott.
I close my eyes and it's Dr. Smith making another deal with some alien.... amazing
Awesome that’s the way TV shows used to be I miss it😎
Two legends together and I never knew this existed!!!!!great thanks so much for this gem!!!!
Bud Abbot, quite the talent. Found this from following Jonathan Harris' interviews. Enjoyed this greatly. Comedy is the height of the acting profession, and proof of concept right here. A study in timing and delivery really. I was born in '54, so black and white television was king during my childhood. Great lessons watching this. Better than paying for stupid cable anyway. More entertaining too, IMHO.
Bud is not in this.
Oh dear, another "not in my day" bore.
@@Russellye5man1 Not a bore at all. Or what have you got of interest?
He meant Lou.
I never knew this even existed. Thanks for posting.
You can tell Lou is going to enter when the music changes.
After 'becoming' British, Harris never had to change his persona. Still, I loved his excellent and memorable acting. He was Special!
Haha! I knew the plumber (Costello) was lying when he said the torch flame would only extend 8 inches! Oh the pain....the pain....the pain.
I never thought I would ever see this!
Thanks so much!
WOW!
This is great!!!! I have always wanted to see this. Thank you so much for sharing it.
Thanks for sharing this.
8:23 "No, you dummy! I told you WHO's on First!"
"That's what I'm trying to find out, Dr. Smith!"
+LandondeeL WHATS ON SECOND
Jonathan Harris, aka "Dr. Smith" from Lost In Space, also appeared in an episode of Sanford & Son, in an episode about a commode/old fashion toilet, and 2 episodes of the Twilight Zone, one where he plays a medical doctor ("Room for one more, honey") and another as a member of a fancy country club where one member tries to silence another who he feels talks too much, by promising to pay him handsomely if he can remain silent for an entire year. Harris plays a member who is opposed to the wager, which he sees as unrealistically demanding and cruel.
From the books I have Read, They remain Friends until Lou's Death in 1959
For the Break up, Both men was getting tired and Lou wanted a solo Career
1964Mbrooks Exactly, The last Vegas shows proved to Bud himself that he was slowing down thanks to his epilepsy medication and age and retired. It should be remembered that Bud was a pallbearer at Lou's funeral and is clearly overcome with grief.
yes in fact Lou made sure Bud got the same amount of contracted $$ & as an aside Lou also made sure the word Paterson was in every movie(where he was born the statue still there & never alone with the homeless ppl around)
omgg zack smith!

Mensh G Oh no... I didn't even know about this.
I remember her in "Tales of Terror" and "The Comedy of Terrors" with Vincent Price and Peter Lorre.
LOL - there's a picture of a naked lady behind Harris.
Costello was great right up to his death. If only he had lived when medicine could have detected heart problems early. His weight fluctuated and he smoked cigars. He also worked too hard. He didn't really enjoy work. He drove himself.
It was the sad times for Lou Costello between the years from 1957 with the IRS problems with Bud Abbott included that ended their friendship and his accidental death just 3 months after he finished filming THE 30 FOOT BRIDE OF CANDY ROCK (1959). Lou should have lived longer to see the world change drastically from the 1960s to the 21st century. I wish Lou Costello was going to live on for the next few decades as a single comedian actor like Jerry Lewis (1926-2017). RIP Lou Costello🙏😔
You mean his son's death. The IRS took their homes. They both could've retired if the IRS hadn't take all of their money. Lou died in 1959 of a heart attack at 52 that I think was from heartache over his son. His wife died at 48 before him from a heart attack or heartache too.
Separate beds 🛌.
Don’t worry, he’s got a pickle for you.
Doctor Smith has the pain.
Who?
Doctor Smith.
How can I call a doctor if you won't tell me who has the pain?
Doctor Smith.
I know the doctor is Smith. Who is he helping?
He has the pain.
Doctor Who?
Different show.
Lou Costello in a more, serious role with Mr. Smith instead of Bud Abbott
Jonathan Harris proving once again that he was unable to act.

john harris
Is that Lurene Tuttle playing his wife?
Yes.
@@julianhermanubis6800 Cheers!
Who was the pretty girl?
Joyce Jameson, who acted opposite Vincent Price, Jack Benny and Clint Eastwood.
They broke up the act in 1957, so I don't think they were close friends.
dboboc See above, but Lou's daughter's book refers to Uncle Bud. They were family friends. It should be
remembered that Bud was a pallbearer at Lou's funeral and is clearly
overcome with grief.
+dboboc Thy were best friends. Breaking up the act has nothing to do with that.
Joyce Jameson
